Okay, so I was building my fortress, and decided that instead of making soldiers from the people who are decent at fighting already, I should try training novices.  I gave them a uniform of just weapons (Masterwork Iron stuffs) and following the advice on the "Soldier" wiki page, I left them inactive.

Not long after, much to my surprise, I get a message that one of my guys has been struck down.  I z to the location, and it's in the bedroom complex.  I check the report, and I find a message that the Captain of the Guard (some doofus with no skills at all) punched one of my furnace operators in the head, jamming the skull into the brain, etc.  (One-hit kill, too, if it's relevant.)

I thought it was a freak thing, so I ignored it, got jumped by goblins, made a squad out of folks with relevant skills, killed the goblins, and then...

"'MinerX' Ecemdeler has been stuck down."

I freak a bit - as denoted by the X, he's one of my two Legendary Miners.  I check the logs, and find that a certain Tobul Tunginet hacked down the defenseless miner with his masterwork battleaxe.  Mr. Ecemdeler didn't even fight back.  Tobul Tunginet is also from the squad of losers.  I immediately disbanded the group, but... why?

Why do happy (ecstatic, actually - I checked) dwarves kill each other?  Was it because I gave a bunch of losers weapons and left them off duty?  Was it a 100+ dwarf thing (I don't generally have this many)?  What was it?

Do I need to get a sheriff to cut down on crime?

I'm... confused.  And worried, too.

Have you failed any mandates recently? Do you have jails set up? If yes to 1 and no to 2, then its because of this sequence of events:

1) Urist McLameNoble mandates the construction of bismuth bronze items.
2) There is no bismuth, so the mandate cannot be completed.
3) Kadol McMetalsmith has skill in metalsmithing, and is accused of violating a production order.
4a) If there is a jail available, Kadol serves his sentence.
4b) If no jail is available, then the punishment is upped to beating.
5b) Morul McCaptianoftheGuard beats the offender with his weapon, maiming or killing him.

Did you check [ z ] Justice to see if these deaths were the byproduct of punishment?

Checked the z -> Justice screen.  Apparently the killing of my Legendary Miner was because he tantrumed and broke a cage trap while getting away from horrible death at the hands of goblins.  And the furnacer was killed because he produced prohibited items.

And a metalsmith has it coming... hm...

Okay, all makes sense, and everything is 'right' in the world.  Gonna go make some jails.

(Also, you folks respond fast!)
