The Menacing Paintress: Expedition 33 (Spoilers likely)
« on: April 29, 2025, 07:30:35 pm »

So I caved to the propaganda and started playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Wow is it a good game so far.  Fantastic characters. Fantastic world-building. Gameplay that is sufficiently challenging for my timing-based-game-deficient eye-hand coordination.

It's also astonishing how much is in the game for something supposedly created by a team of only 30 people.

It does suffer from some linearity, and some typical fantasy tropes, but overall this is a 9/10 in my book. The only thing keeping it from a 10 is some minor technical stuff (immersion-breaking glitchiness getting stuck on terrain, for instance).

Anyone else playing?  Please use spoiler tags as appropriate.

This is way beyond my potato's capabilities, but I'm curious. Is this some Euro JRPG dadgame or what? I can't get a sense for it from the trailers.

Think Final Fantasy vibes, with a mixed turn-based and twitch-timing combat; combat is "zoned" like the early FFs but you get it by touching enemies that do appear on the map.  Setting is French, not Japanese.  Characters are also more human-like than anime waifu.  So yes, it's more JRPG than western RPG.

Lots of character customization (attribute points, weapon affinities to attributes), but they are "pre-set" characters.
