questions about the Blue Gold *massive spoilers!*
« on: August 07, 2010, 01:19:56 pm »

I have a few questions about adamantine.

How big is the abyss to hell?is it a 4x4 pit?
Does adamantine still have the chance to instakill your fort a season after mining it?
How big is the amount of "clowns" that come from the abyss? (from small amount to fucking zerg rush)
Is it possible to stop the demons from coming out of the abyss?

All answers assume you're playing the current version.

>How big is the abyss to hell?is it a 4x4 pit?

Hell is everywhere. If you manage to dig deep enough, past the magma sea, you will hit Hell.

>Does adamantine still have the chance to instakill your fort a season after mining it?

No, but the adamantine pipes in the magma sea are at least partially hollow, and if you hit the hollow, you pierce Hell.

>How big is the amount of "clowns" that come from the abyss? (from small amount to fucking zerg rush)

Demons outnumber ants, and may well spawn infinitely. Walling off Hell after piercing it kills FPS. (think FPS < 3)

>Is it possible to stop the demons from coming out of the abyss?

Yes, but see above. Your best bet would be to set up a whooooole lot of steel or adamantine Upright Spikes linked to a repeater. Weapon traps are not suitable for this, and either way some demons will probably still make it through. The HFS in this version is far more badass than 40d.

the number of them is not infinite, but rather in the upper billions. ::)
not that it really makes a difference.

No problem. Have Fun.

The demon research article, last I read, hadn't definitively determined that. The author determined that zero demon species resulted in zero demons, but it hadn't been determined that individual demons were spawned ex nihilo rather than taken from an existing population. For example, ants, which are counted "numberless" or something like that in the interface, actually have a tracked population, but it's not known whether, if you kill all of the demons, more will spawn ex nihilo as dwarfmode dwarfs will. An academic distinction, of course, but also an unanswered question in dwarven zoology as far as I'm aware. Note that I said "may well be" infinite, implying a lack of certainty.
