There's quite a bunch of topics which have characters all jumbled up, making them a pain to read.

edit. also trying to include special characters in posts seems to give an error.

If you hadn't mentioned that I probably wouldn't have been able to fix the add a word to the text thread.

If it's not just a matter of the (ISO-8859-1?) text being read by the migration-converter in an encoding-dumb manner, but the 'new' forum home and/or backend manager itself refusing to announce anything but the lesser (UTF-8) character scheme, then it seems a bit backwards. Might be a misconfiguration of the freshly installed http-server (if that's part of what happened), or relying upon ride-sharing upon a 'new' host that's actually quite old

But I can't easily check the site's meta-info, from the device I'm currently on. Also, it could (if not just a matter of adding allowable encodings to go out) take a lot of effort to hunt down all kinds[1] of 'breakages', if the backend data itself has been denatured, and 'renature' them.

(Especially as it's a potentially lossy process, devoid of the meta info, so you can't disentangle a smart-quote that was converted to nonsense from a deliberate quoting of nonsense to illustrate what that smartquote has become (or, maybe in some rare cases, actual legitimate funny sequences with an unescaped truth of their own). So it could make a lot of intentional "<a-acute><euro><whatever>" sequences appear as the thing that they can mean, but not in this context.)

...erm, I'm not explaining things very well. I'm more sure that I know what I mean than I am that y'all do, when it comes down to it.

Anyway, for potential (future) testing of various possibilities, just leaving this here: self redacted - hope that's not going to break anything! pre-post edit: Ummm...

Yes, it broke things on trying to post. Removing my test string.
PPE2: In fact, it broke things so much that the Post button wouldn't work, nor did my on-screen keyboard (popped up if I tapped the Subject text-box, vanished if I tapped the message box here). Could select and copy the above(/below) and start a new reply to paste into. If you're reading this, that worked... ;)

[1] - examples, that won't awkwardly further break or 'fix themselves' with no warning.

There's an auto-detecting thing, but I didn't believe it at first. But just spent some time trying to work out that I did need to be on a -3 offset. (Making the server time UTC+3, which is a strange place for it to be... I really don't know what to make of this.)

I didn't realize the timestamps are off until you made me look :P

And boy, how did the forum think I am +7 whilst my timezone is +1, I have no idea. Autodetect did reset it, but really...

For some reason it broke the words disagree and unless in my sig quote as well.

Seems completely random, there's not special characters or whatever with those words, it's juse the plain words that turn into disagree and unless

EDIT: updating my profile fixed it, but still weird. In the profile edit textbox it had been turned into disagree and unless as well

Updating Belegian Emblem IC Thread, I tried to post a message. Another member in the meanwhile posted a message, and I got the 'you might want to review your message' warning. Sure enough as it was a player's message, so I edited mine accordingly for a few minutes.

However, sending the post afterwards caused the 'the last post from this IP was less than 15 seconds ago'.

Afterwards the message refused to send, the 'post' button ceased to work. I had to copy the message, open the thread in separate tab, then send a message in it, and only then it sent. This never happened before.

So far, anything I have tried[1] that's goes well out of UTF-8 will Preview ok, but not Post, getting the above. And backing up, editing the offending 'smart quote'/whatever out of the stream then doesn't let me Post (and, as mentioned, even persuaded my Android brower not to even offer the keyboard up for use).

Refreshing the now 'poisoned' Post Reply page (with the 'salty' character removed) seems to be the way to proceed, then. It actually didn't need me to re-paste the message contents (that I had copied up into the paste-buffer, knowing that I might have needed to retype it). But this was Firefox, not Chrome[2], so maybe that helps.

Haven't given it another go here.  Oh, go on. Let's try it...  “Smartquotes U+201C, U+201D”!
  • Preview..? backspaced - I got: Maintenance Mode | This board is in Maintenance Mode. Some needed updating/maintainence from the forum move! Back in a bit.
  • Copying this message. Looks like there might be a fix on the way? Well, probably makes the rest of my testing plan redundant.
  • Ok, then, let's try the Preview this time, now that the forum is back again. - Yep, Previews nice.
  • Now let's try a Post Not to put too fine a point on it...  Looks like the problems have been fixed[3]. Hoorah!

[1] Limited to the tablet's on-screen keyboard, only just now got onto a 'proper' computer where I can actually experiment

[2] Which tends to do silly things like completely lose wiki edits just because I switched apps temporarily just because I wanted to check something. It's always good to do a Preview on wikiedits I'm making, so that if I have to refresh the page it at least refreshes back to the edits I made just before I left to pick up the thing I wanted to get to paste into it.
[3] Including the broken title of the thread above, etc, at a quick glance.

Additional 'fix', that some of you might have to also adapt to, having previously followed (or led) my lead in adjusting their profile:

The Look And Feel auto-detect timezone for the server thing now sets me down on a 0-offset (it was still -3 when I looked, before I gave it a chance to auto-adjust again).

(Though it is is very confusing at the moment. As it is tonight/this morning when the UK does it Spring On from GMT to BST, so it is 01:22 by my phone (which is new, so I haven't worked out if it auto-adjusts, but I'm infering that it hasn't yet), while it's 02:22 (...:23 now) by both this computer and the tablet clock, having only just skipped 1AM->2AM like good little devices. The prior post (to me) looks like an 01:15 posting, so maybe I'm not autodetected as GMT and (unless I manually change it) won't ever DST itself. But I'll look into that tomorrow(/later-this) morning when I wake up and it's unambiguously Daylight Savings for every clock that might ever care to work to it...)

edit:Ok, so I didn't update in the morning-proper. Because neither at 01:00-02:00 GMT (02:00-0300 BST) nor at approaching noon (BST) did the Auto Detect do anything but give me zero-hours of offset. But tried today (well after nominal DST switchover) and it Autos to "1" (starting at zero becore I did the Auto). Which should be right for Summertime operation.

But I just can't remember what the SMF 2.0.13 version of the forum did, before the change to 2.0.19... Was this one of the places where I accepted UTC/GMT timings year-round (an hour off whilstever I lived under BST), or did it also have a DST-following tickbox in its profile settings (that this one lacks)? I'm fairly sure I didn't change it biannually to match it manually. It would have been ok if, instead of simple offset, it had actual "GMT(/BST)" drop-down to it so it was confident about territory, not just (essentially) the rough pole-to-pole-spanning latitude. But this is Simple Machines Forum software, so maybe that wasn't (certainly isn't now) an available feature to it.

Anyway. FYsI. May have to re-remember this whole thing when "Fall Back" happens.

Just saw that you got https working.  Thank you!

On a side note, my browser is complaining that the connection is not fully secure (though it does say that the certificate is valid).

I suspect that's because of custom avatar images being loaded from external sites using plain HTTP - it's technically allowed, but it causes browsers to complain that the site is only "partially encrypted".

I have foreseen the future!

Then I went into my profile and told it to auto-detect my time zone offset.

Not sure how that got changed, as I had set it just recently…
