What the

...is that the control panel for the illusion, rather than a part of the illusion itself? Or some kind of key to unlock the artifact?

If the illusion can just spit us out at will I'm not sure what we can do about that. The fact that turning it off bounced us out makes me think ripping the module off is probably bad rather than a shortcut?

Although one thought does cross your mind.  Anyone who got to this point, had to first get past that fish.
This is a good point. Nobody was supposed to be able to beat that fucking thing, it's probably hard to sneak past... so what's the point? This might reinforce the control panel idea.

Examine the device again. We have the switches and pair of circuit banks, what else can we see? Anything interactable?

What device?  You're stuck outside the illusion again.  Turning around, the four of you head back into the dome..

And this time it's odd.  Very, very, VERY strange.

The previous three times you were stuck on obviously identifiable locations.  They weren't right, but you could tell where you were, and it made sense.

Now, things are crazy.

The four of you are currently standing on top of the open sea.  Water is visible in all directions, but as Alice kneels down to touch it, she says 'This doesn't feel like water.  It feels like stone.'

Almost as if she says that, your view shifts.  Now you are on the side of a mountain, and you're in the middle of the aftermath of a battle.  There are damaged trees, acid marks on the ground, and the smell of pain and sorrow.

Trence curls up and says "I want to go home."

A moment later, you're in an agricultural village, looking not that dissimilar to many others you've seen, although the crops are in fenced, shared fields and livestock is penned rather than pastured.  Everything else you see is normal, homes, people, the village well, clothing..  ..although you see no tavern or adventurers guild.  You see people doing work in the fields, and several people getting water from the well.

Maybe this is progress? Talk to the people, say we're explorers.

They don't say much of notice.  You're welcomed to the village, and asked if you've seen the mayor, but there doesn't seem to be much, if any, reaction from these people to your presence.

Do you ask about anything in particular?

Oh no. Aw hell. It's feeding off Trence's memories instead of someone else's. That's why Sessha recognized Mosral, Alice recognized Losoa, and the forest of Artolia must have been recognized by Willis.

But now Trence is in the driver's seat, which means it's gonna get weird.

Have Trence transform into a poison dragon and try to get some of the locals to play with him. Sessha should ask someone about the war.

What's this place called?

It's just "The village."  That's not that odd, a lot of small villages have no names.  You ask about a larger area, but it's just "The Homeland."  That's somewhat more odd.

Have Trence transform into a poison dragon and try to get some of the locals to play with him. Sessha should ask someone about the war.

Trence does so.  Nobody really notices him, and, after he chirps, one of the village kids also changes into a dragon.  A water one, like you've seen before.  The two of them run off and start chasing each other.

..Willis, Sessha, and Alice are too surprised to ask a follow up question for a moment, although the villagers don't even blink.

Eventually Sessha gets it together and asks about the war.

The villager responds with "What war?"

Have Trence transform into a poison dragon

No, wai-

Oh, I guess it was fine. But I was wondering if this place was actually in Zeneb or Kishata, as a roundabout way of fulfilling our quest for knowledge.

I KNEW IT

The villager responds with "What war?"
Okay, so probably whatever grim apocalypse we've seen in... I actually forget if it's Trence's memories or the dragon shards we've been collecting, but whatever it is hasn't happened yet or hasn't hit here yet.

...still, is it odd that there's no war on? Like, not necessarily here. Just, anywhere. Out there. Somewhere.

...unless Trence was too derpy to pay attention to any wars, therefore nobody made out of his memories knows about them. Damn it!

Nevermind the war. Ask about the nearest major cities and political structures. Try to get a sense of where we are geographically.

I mean, it's just an illusion, so even if everything went terribly wrong it probably still wouldn't go terribly wrong.

But Trence said he wanted to go home, so this is probably his actual home village. We're probably going to want to go looking for his family at some point, and that is probably going to be extremely painful.

"There's no cities, the island's too small.  There's the docktown, and the villages, and Mountain, but there aren't any real cities."

..after a moment, the villager continues.

"Did you mean the pirates?  That's not a war, they're just pirates."

Okay something else. Does this mean Trence actually visited the site of a battle? A battle with acid marks, such as might involve his fellow dragons?

Alright. Small island inhabited by dragons, pestered by pirates. These are some very bold pirates!

Have Trence ask his fellow children where cool things are imported from. There's gotta be imports on an island, right?

Have Sessha ask about specifics with the pirates. Who are they, what are they attacking, how does that fare against people who have wings and breath weapons, and so on.

Too busy, playing!  You were too young to do this.

The three of you head down towards the docks, leaving Trence behind.

The docks are relatively more normal.  There's still the strange villagers about, but there are at least three big ships in port, full ocean-going vessels.  Looking for fighters, you come to a small fenced in complex with a two story barracks and a gate guard.

"So what are you doing here?  Want to sign up for a trip?"
