We could always try to breach the cavern layers. Familiar plants and caves are good for the dorfy soul.

I agree with MFPB about needing to dig out a bit more safe-ish area underground. We need some more space!

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Dig am elaborate labyrinthine underground base. That should work to keep away at least some aggressors.

Since y'all expressed an interest for traps earlier, and need for a carpenters workshop, I'll give you a trappable hallway and a room big enough to fit one - well, that or whatever else you want to build.
