Military Application of Animals Project
« on: July 31, 2011, 02:00:44 pm »

So I have a question, How well do Cave Crocodiles go in a fight against goblins or Elves?

I am asking this because I have a breeding group of them and want to know if they can be used for things other than feeding my kobolds and powering my butchery and crafting industries.

( I also have a breeding group of Giant Cave Swallows)

Why not try them out yourself?

for better results, put them in groups of 10.
If they do turn out to be a failure, then you can tell us.

Cave crocodiles are pretty good in fights. Have you ever had one invade your fortress? If so, you've probably seen a couple of deaths. This happened to me; it attacked my mason. It tore off an arm, then a leg, then an arm; he kicked it with his last leg once before that was ripped off also. However, a dog shook it around by the head for a while before an axe to the head killed it. Cave crocs should be great in number.

Make a bomb.

well so far cave crocs have made short work of  5 badgers, 1 bear, a carp and a rampaging trader still waiting on a siege

Yes.
Time does pass for things in cages. Well. They age, but don't eat. So.

Animals need to eat even in a cage.  Your grazers can still starve to death in cages.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Crocs aren't known for their grazing habits, though, so that's okay.

After noting how CC's are ampihbious I thought up using the pit drop into water dilled with bloodthirsty crocs trap.

looks somewhat like this
                                 ___________
   ################             ######
                                 #             #
                                 #             #
                                 #             #
                                 #             #
  ################              #
                                                #
 ##########\------------------#
 ########################

Is there a need to make the water any deeper or would that partially break the fall of any gobbo's or elves?

# = Wall
- = Water
_ = Bridge
\ = Ramp

That design looks like it could cause quite a bit of fun for those gobbo's.

Also, AFAIK falling creatures go through water like it's air, and as such will hit the bottom of any body of water they fall in.

So yes, you should make the water deeper.

Even better, build a water tower (say a 10x10x10 tower with a pumpstack and hatch at the bottom) and use that as your Croc Deployment Mechanism. Can anyone say, in all honesty, that they don't like the idea of a siege being hit by a tidal wave full of angry war cave crocodiles?

or maybe Valve goes out of business because they invested too heavily in something which then fails - like, say, human civilization.
Alternatively, initiate strife to refuse additional baked goods, and then abscond.
