DF Gameplay Questions / AWOL bookkeeper

Our bookkeeper has been gone for at least 20 years and the nobles screen will not allow a replacement.
It would be nice to get a new bookkeeper after all these years of uncertain inventory levels.

I wanted to use DFHack's "devel/kill-hf" command but I don't know how to find the dwarf's histfig_id

DF Suggestions / UI tweak for barracks

In the screen to assign squads to barracks for training, could we have indicators for squads that already have a barracks assigned.  I'm thinking similarly to when assigning animals to pastures.  This would save a bit of searching around and prevent assigning multiple barracks to the same squad.  It becomes a pain when you get large numbers of squads.

DF Suggestions / Sparring and accidents

Is there a chance for each sparring attack to actually cause injury?  I can't recall seeing it happen.
My suggestion is to have some accidental damaging hits occur during sparring... rarely of course.

Such as a very small chance a hit does a random fraction of it's normal damage if not successfully blocked/parried.

DF Suggestions / "Freeze" current uniform for military

Forgive me if this has been suggested, but I haven't seen it.

To prevent military dwarves from constantly seeking out the latest, higher quality armor or weapon... have a "freeze current uniform" toggle option in the military screen.  This would turn off whatever game routine(s) that cause them to upgrade their equipment, which we all know results in dwarves running around half naked as better quality armor (etc) is produced.

Toggle it back off and they do what they normally do now.



If anyone has the urge to cite other threads where this discussion has been made before, I'm ready to be stomped into the dust.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / CTD gremlin (?)

0.47.05 using the alpha pack:  DF4705Win64VettlingrsRevenge5a

I've had DF do a few CTD's with this pack (yes it's alpha DFHack I know), but no lasting problems seem to have been caused.
Here's the latest rough sequence of events before it crashed.
1. Tunneled into cave, began smoothing the tunnel & building door and a bridge.
2. Got the "gremlin... drive it away" message and the gremlin was spotted near the tunnel, in the cave.
3. Began getting hundreds of "Hunter cancels hunt, can't find path."  Found the 2 hunters, they are above ground hunting as usual.  The only animals on the surface are giant wrens, no ground animals around up there.
4. Tasked a melee dwarf to kill the gremlin, which promptly left the scene.  Canceled the kill order.
5. Game CTD.

It's probably a longshot, but any ideas?

Before I go and build tons of display cases and replace lots of pedestals with them (for happy thoughts) because of this in the wiki:

DF Gameplay Questions / Finding which bedroom is a particular dwarf's

I'm looking for tips on this.  With 175 dwarfs it's not fun finding one... tried to organize them, but with deaths and migrants it gets mixed up over the years.  Using q and searching over the beds is pretty tedious.

I know about the DFHack z-x-b, but that's a different thing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Pottery - need help glazing

I searched this forum, the wiki, and the web and I'm having trouble getting earthenware items glazed.

Have a magma kiln.
Have gathered clay on hand.
Have made a variety of earthenware items.
Have cassiterite (ore) and have noted that tin bars won't work for glazing.
Have ash bars.

In the kiln, the glazing tasks are unavailable.  There must be something I'm missing.

DF Suggestions / Military Uniform tied to dwarf OR squad position

Toady, please add an option (when you get to redoing the military) so we can choose to have a dwarf's uniform follow them no matter what squad or squad position they are moved to.  In other words, let us choose for each squad position AND for each dwarf, whether the uniform is tied to the position or the dwarf.

This would be wonderful, especially when dwarves name their weapons (or are given artifacts) and then are transferred to a different squad or moved to a new position in their squad.

I've found assigning specific weapons and armor for each dwarf (although tedious) works great, and they pick up their gear quickly. This also avoids the reshuffling caused by the "pecking order" when a new, higher quality piece of gear is forged/made.

The option suggested above would be absolutely, positively wonderful when switching a dwarf with specific weapons and armor to a different squad.  Right now to do that and have them keep their gear, you have to do these steps,not sure if the order can be different:

- make sure the "new" squad's position has no uniform assigned
- move the dwarf to that new position
- unassign all the uniform's specific weapons and armor in their old position
- reassign the dwarf's new uniform piece by piece in their new position*

*And it's hard to know if you're getting all the right weapons and armor reassigned.

Is what happened to Thikut something many of you have seen?
He seemed to have a good life (for a dwarf).
He arrived at my 12-year fortress about a year ago, along with his wife.

Maybe this is the key phrase in his thoughts: "... is put off by family." (light blue text in 1st picture)

I've tried to capture enough relevant data in the pic to help any psychologists out there give a diagnosis.

DF Suggestions / Deceased, Dead, Killed, etc. - save a little data

In Fortress Mode, it would be great if deceased citizen dwarfs (names & relationships for a start anyway, and some of their data too) were retained in some of the game's listings (during play, apart from legends mode).

1. Keep them listed in the "r" relationships of other dwarfs, with "deceased" marked next to them.

2. Maintain some basic data on each deceased citizen (at least) from the time of their death.

As I understand it, almost everything about the deceased is deleted, probably to save computer resources. Perhaps a minimal amount of data on them would not tax FPS, memory, etc.  It would be beneficial to at least have (1.) above.

The stray cat (no owner) has been standing on a slab that's engraved to one of our dead enemies, which was some kind of non-dwarf but I can't determine what race.  What is the cat doing?


But of course, the bigger question is where can I find a resource that tells all the flashing color meanings?

I see this on the wiki, but can't find more info.


P.S.  I wish more info was available on the dead !!!

DF Suggestions / Engrave Slabs Menu

It's understood that the UI changes will render this picture obsolete, but the idea is still relevant.

Color-code the dead in the list, according to whether they have or have not an engraved slab, have been memorialized, or entombed.
This would save lots of scrolling and looking a the top to see what has been done for each of the dead.
