Just a place for me to post up any DF stories I feel like writing :)

Ano Bidawevafe and the Dragon

Ano was born in the year 35. He never knew his father. His mother was a mere mortal, a normal woman from the Land Across the Sea. She rarely talked of his father, in the few years that Ano knew her. Ano was born mildly deformed, not in an obvious way, but more subtly. You would look upon the child and feel uneasy, knowing that something was wrong but not being sure what it was. Seeing him day after day, the people of his village grew angry – deformed children are usually drowned at birth.

He was twelve when they came for him. His mother tried to stop them, but when she slashed the village elder with a carving knife, they killed her. Then they turned their attention to the boy. He cowered, scared, and crying, willing his dead mother to stop the men. They attacked him, tearing his clothes from his body. But then, with a strength he did not know he possessed, Ano struck at them. He punched the largest in the chest. The sound of ribs cracking filled the small hut. The rest of the mob fled, leaving only the corpse of Ano’s mother, and the sobbing ruin of the man Ano punched, and Ano, poor Ano, huddled next to his mother, crying.

Ano did not feel safe anymore. He found a large copper dagger, and a copper spear, and fled. He fled into the wilderness. For twenty four years he lived in the forest, with nothing but his copper spear and dagger.  One day, he came upon the ocean, and decided to swim. He swam, far away, until he reached our shores.

He staggered up the beach, resting where he found himself. Where Ano came from, they did not know of Bogeymen, and so he felt perfectly safe sleeping in the open after dark. Unfortunately, such ignorance in our land usually leads to a quick and brutal death. Inevitably, they came. The Bogeymen. Six of the hideous creatures came at Ano, their cackling shaking him awake. Most men flee when confronted with such terrible things, but Ano was not most men. He stood, and fought.

He held his copper dagger in his left hand, his spear in his right. The fastest bogeyman charged towards him, but Ano was ready. He side stepped. The bogeyman, confused, passed him. Ano struck out backwards with his dagger. The blade sliced through the bogeyman’s leg, tearing a tendon. Even before it fell Ano was striking at the next foul monster, stabbing his spear into its gut, impaling it. Turning, ripping the weapon out of the creature, he bashed another across the head, sending it sprawling. It vanished. He felt something smash into his back with the force of a sledge hammer, throwing him to the ground. He rolled. A foot slammed into the ground where he had been lying a moment ago. He stabbed it with his dagger, and got up. Ano ran. He ran from the beasts, who kept vanishing and appearing elsewhere.

For an hour they chased him, occasionally coming close enough for Ano to strike at them with his weapons, and always, always, cackling. Then the sun came up. The cackling faded away, until all was silent. Not even the birds sang. The bogeyman blood dripped from Ano’s weapons, but the bogeymen themselves had vanished.

Panting and fearful, he stood there, but nothing came. After an hour, the birds began to sing again. He headed through the forest once more, the blood drying as the sun rose into the air. A small path ran through the forest, no cobbles, just a dirt road, rutted where carts had been dragged through. He followed it, walking for mile after mile, until he came to a small village. Glancing at the sun, Ano guessed there were only a few more hours until night fell, and he wondered whether the creatures of the night would attack a village like this one.

He entered a building, and asked if he could stay the night there. The building was nothing special – just an average human home. The inhabitants welcomed Ano, and he asked them about the monsters he had fought.
“Sounds like Bogeymen.” One of them said,
“Definitely Bogeymen. You shouldn’t travel at night, friend.” Another advised. Ano asked if there was anything he could do to help the villagers. They told him of several bandits who kept attacking them,
“You look strong enough, but you’ll not be able to beat them by yourself. Go to the castle, the soldiers there will help you.”

So in the morning, Ano walked to the castle. It took him a couple of hours, but when he was there he was awed by the high grey walls. He went through the gate, and asked three soldiers to join him. They all agreed. Two of the soldiers had bows, the other a mace. They became Ano’s companions.

He went to each bandit camp, slaughtered the outlaws, and, one by one, brought their heads back to the village. In his battles he took weapons and armour from the dead, and by the time his task was done he was as well armed as any of the soldiers of the castle.
“You are truly a great warrior!” Said the village elder, “But this next task, will be a true test of your strength.
“Three days walk to the North East, there is a cave. It is in the hills of Goldenivory – the Jewels Of Fire. In the cave you will find Ongong Flamebranded, the Gilded Fire of pearls. He is a dragon; wise, old and powerful. He has been here longer than any man. He has slain many of our people.  Kill him and bring his head to me.”

So Ano had a new quest, to become a Dragon Slayer. He and his men walked for three days, and three nights, fighting off Bogeymen and wolves, until they reached the hills of Goldenivory.

Stumps of trees littered the ash ridden wasteland, and the men could hear the crackling of flames in the distance. They stalked through the grey ruin, searching for the opening of the cave of Ongong Flamebranded.

They found it. A pile of bones marked the entrance. It was on the top of a hill, a large hole in the ground. Ano and his companions stalked towards it. They got closer. And closer. The air above the cave shimmered with the heat. Ano crept in first, followed by the two archers with the maceman holding the rear.

By now, Ano had a silver spear in his right hand, and a bronze shield in his left. The archers had no shields, but were well armoured with iron chainmail. Ano lead the way through a maze of corridors, turned a corner; and saw him. Ongong Flamebranded.

The dragon was huge, with bright red scales. It took a vast breath, sucking all of the air out of the cave, and when it blew out again, its breath was mingled with fire. Ano raised his shield, deflecting the flames, and burning his forearm. He darted to one side to avoid a sweep from a huge claw, and then slashed with his sword at the beast’s leg. The strike bounced off the dragon’s scales. The maceman joined the fight, slammed his mace into the creatures belly, as the two archers fired arrows at its head. The dragon blew flames at Ano again, who once more used his shield to protect himself. He stabbed his sword between two scales, causing a bellow of pain to issue from the dragon’s lips.

Then Ano was sent flying by a swipe from one of the dragon’s paws. He slammed into a wall. An archer scored a hit on the dragon’s mouth. The maceman was knocked over by its tail. Enraged by the puny human who had hurt its mouth, the dragon incinerated the two archers, their armour bubbling to mix with their molten bones.

Then Ano was back on his feet, and he ran at the monster, thrusting his sword into its belly, before darting back to dodge its frenzied attacks, and leaping onto its back. The maceman managed to hit the beast in its head, as Ano managed to force his weapon into its brain. The dragon fell, not dead, just unconscious, and Ano, with the maceman, tore it to pieces.  It took a long time, for dragons are large, and not easily killed. When it breathed no more, Ano hacked at its neck until its head came off. Then, with the maceman carrying the head, he picked up a bag, and filled it with the gold that they found there.

They travelled back to the town. Yet Ano did not truly know his maceman, who, deep inside, had a treacherous heart. One night, when all seemed quiet, the maceman tried to kill Ano, and take the gold for himself. He lead a pair of bandits to their camp, and the three of them attacked the dragon slayer.

Ano is more than a mere mortal however, and he was able to defend himself. One of the bandits was quickly slaughtered, and the other was badly wounded before Ano turned on the traitor. The maceman died, killed by Ano’s silver spear. He let the wounded bandit bleed to death.

However, the three men had taken their toll on Ano. He was wounded, and slow. So when the bogeymen appeared once more, he could not run.

They took him by surprise, knocking him to the ground, and though he managed to kill four of the beasts, he was eventually killed by the terrible monsters.

The hoard was never found. Perhaps the bogeymen took it? Or did the wounded bandit live through his horrendous pain and claim it? None shall ever know.

Ano’s body was buried with the head of the dragon that he killed.

DF Gameplay Questions / Waterfall splash/over flowing?
« on: November 27, 2010, 10:16:51 am »
Hey All,

In my new Fortress in .16 I created a pair of waterfalls which create mist in my meeting area & hospital to keep everyone clean & happy. They both drain into the same pool, which has a pump stack, which then brings the water back to the top with some going back into the waterfall (the water flow from the brook wasn't very good) and some back into the brook.

The problem is, that in my dining hall, but not hospital, there's is a covering of 1/7 water over all the tiles:

I don't think it's over flowing because the pool underneath isn't full up, though the tile underneath the waterfall is 7/7, but that's been like that from the start & it's only recently starting to fill.

I'm worried that this might be more than mere splashes & may flood my fortress (I can switch it off, but I'd rather not).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How To Cheer Up My Dorf?
« on: November 25, 2010, 09:26:25 am »
Basically, I have a Hero Dwarf who was recently Engaged in some heavy fighting in which half of the Garrison of this Hero's tower were killed. They have been sentenced to about 60 days in prison after several disorderly conducts & building destruction (Her Cell to be precise).

The Prison walls are engraved with even a masterpiece put in there, she has a bed too! Also when she had escaped she spent some time in a statue garden with quality engravings, statues and chairs yet refuses to be cheered up:

Any Tips? This is in 40d Btw

Great, as I was typing another of her friends died & she's back into Miserable. Seeing as she's a hero dorf in the military i don't really want to end up executing her or her going mad, I recently retired her from the military because she's probably seen enough fighting for this lifetime :p

DF Community Games & Stories / Cloisteredwood - Story.
« on: November 21, 2010, 06:29:51 pm »
Hello All,

My 40d Fortress is now running smoothly - despite the recurring goblin attacks (though they seem to have died down for the moment) - and in a recent Migrant wave, I decided to pick out one Dwarf, and write a story that amount to his Memoires (I do hope he doesn't die). So, here's Chapter 1, in which our Hero Deler Kodorerith, arrives at the hell hole that is; Cloisteredwood.

DF Community Games & Stories / Dyeaxe: The Ice Fortress
« on: September 16, 2010, 04:09:32 pm »
Hey Guys,

Just for fun I've decided to start on a secondary project to my main fortress, which is a fortress in the frozen South. I've also decided to write a blog about it, in the form of the diary of the expedition leader "'Happy' Fikodnil".

Here goes.

2nd Granite 253:
There's nothing here. Just... nothing. Trees, snow, foxes, bears, snow, ice, and trees. Oh - and snow. Well, first things first, we've dug ourselves some shelter, it's freezing outside. Inside it's getting nice and warm though! There's not even any water here, just ice. Have only dug emergency shell-scrapes at the moment, haven't even found rock yet. Anything is better than staying out here in the cold. Will try to find a way of melting the Ice later.

5th Granite 253:
Got a militia commander at least - enough to scare away the bear. [Military controls have changed since the last version I played so I'm going to have to work it out via wiki soon] Though he seems to be scared of cats so maybe that was a bit over the top. Made sure people can't wander off anymore, it looks dangerous out there, don't want anyone freezing to death.

7th Granite 253:
Dug down quite far - found some water! An underground pool it looks like, we'll get a well up as soon as we can. Still no rock though - plenty of trees to make wood though. The bear killed two of our dogs, looks like we might have a fight on our hands. Scary stuff. The water is an underground river - thank the lord.

Creative Projects / Short Stories :)
« on: September 14, 2010, 04:54:39 am »
Hey Y'All,

I've been writing quite a few short stories over the last few months, though the earlier ones aren't very good!
I've written 3 so far:
Web-Foots and Muskets:
This one was my first one, and is full of mistakes that I can't change because I don't have the word file any more! It's about some Royal Marines during the Napoleonic wars.

The Bays:
Ryan Burns joined the cavalry to escape death at the gallows. He is sent to Spain, where he must not only fight for his life in the battle of Salamanca, but also to protect his sisters from a murdering rapist...

Fist Of Iron:
World War 3. Britain has invaded China. In the Qinling mountains, the crew of a Challenger 2 main battle tank wait for the inevitable battle, that will decide the fate of the world...

Constructive criticism would be wonderful :) You can probably tell that I'm slowly improving! And yes, if my fortress in DF get's over-run I shall be writing a story based on Closteredwood!

I'm also writing another one, which I shall share with you here, bit by bit:

The Red Coat.

DF Suggestions / Besieging Goblin Fortresses!
« on: September 13, 2010, 06:30:34 pm »
Hey,

I think it would be nice to be able to assault a Goblin fortress, If you have enough soldiers.

I think the best way of doing this is in the same style as master of Olympus Zeus, where you select soldiers to go and attack the fortress, and they go off and do that while you stay in control of your fortress, several months later (depending on how far away the fortress is and whether or no the attack was a success) your troops come back, except in a few, very sad cases.

too add another level to this, rather than just having to send loads of troops, it could also be that you select a commander, to lead the attack. This leads onto another skill - command. To get more experience in command soldiers simply have to be the leader of their squad, and over time it accumulates, as well as bonuses if their squad members get kills. The higher the command skill the more likely it is that the attack is a success.

Once soldiers come back from an attack, you get a report of the casualties and how the attack went, etc. There could even be three ways the attack could go:
Victory! The halls of the Goblin fortress are filled with the vile corpses! You now have the option to send a group of migrants to hold the fortress, and send back a quarter of whatever they make.
Stalemate! Both sides have taken heavy losses, but the fortress is still there for the taking. Please send more dwarfs.
Defeat! The attacking force has been repulsed, and limped back home... People depressed by "Recent military defeat".

Sound good?

« on: August 29, 2010, 04:27:28 pm »
Hey Guys,

When building my new Fortress I made a small "mini Fortress" defending a fishing area, which had a garrison of 6 dwarfs who couldn't leave, but have a well & food & beds etc. Just a normal game, not succession or anything.

Some SS:

I started, out of Boredom, to write a Log for it. So here it is up to the date 7th Hematite 204 from when the mini-fort was made,
will Update as the Log is updated:
Fort Garrison:
First Squad "The Inky Days":
Marksdwarf Urvad Obokkidet (Squad Leader)

Marksdwarf Tirist Alathsolam

Second Squad "The Doors Of Lashing":
Marksdwarf Cog Mosuserith (Squad Leader)
Marksdwarf Vabok Irtirsigun
Recruit Lor Udilagsal.

Fortress Log:
27th Obsidian 203:
Garrison takes up residence in the "Granite Tooth". We have large supplies of food, ammunition, and our own water source.

22nd Granite 204:
A Goblin Snatcher attacked the main fort, this is the first Goblin activity from the Goblin Fortress just ten miles to the South of Cloistered Wood. [The Main Fortress, and the Goblin Fortress is 5 squares on the region map away, not visible on the local map.] He was killed by the Marksdwarfs There.

27th Granite 204:
There was a Small Goblin Raid on Cloistered Wood. We mobilised immediately, but were not needed. Marksdwarf Kib Vodiden, from the main garrison, was KIA, leaving a grieving Husband, and two Daughters, one of whom is still a child. One donkey was also killed. Five Goblins were slain by the garrison.

3rd Slate 204:
Another Goblin Snatcher attacked the main fort, it was killed, doing no dammage.

7th Slate 204:
Yet Another Goblin Snatcher, again killed by the main Garrison before it could infiltrate the Fortress.

23rd Slate 204:
Once again a small Goblin Raid attacked the Main Fortress, this time from the south. They were caught by us, and we opened fire, killing 3 and wounding another. The rest Fled. One Dwarf, Atis Zaslaltur, the lye maker, was killed at the beginning of the raid, as she gathered wood.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

26th Slate 204:
Some Migrants Arrived, expecting replacements for those who were lost during the great famine of '03.

20th Feslite 204:
Recruit Lor Udigagsal added to the Garrison, into the 2nd Squad. More replacements bring the main fort's garrison to full strength.

7th Hematite 204:
A Small Goblin Force of at least 14 Goblins assaulted the main fortress from the north west. We Sent the Squad "The Doors Of Lashing" to aid the defence. The assault was defeated, leaving 8 Goblins dead and 2 severly wounded. There were No Dwarf Casualties.

Special mention must be given to Recruit (now Marksdwarf) Vabok Irtirsigun. After leaving the walls to answer the call of nature, Vabok found himself confronted by the entire Goblin force. He opened fire, slaying one with his first shot. Then, while squad leader Marksdwarf Cog Masuserith lead a rescue party, Vabok bravely killed two more Goblins, and seriously wounded another. His promotion is well deserved.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

22nd Hematite 204:
A kobold thief was discovered and driven off to the north, by the main garrison. Another Kobold Thief was discovered, and driven off the the south.

23rd Hematite 204:
Another Kobold Thief was discovered, and this one killed, by the main garrison. That should deter the scum from thieving our hard earned food and goods!

27th Hematite 204:
A Cat has found it's way into the Fort. We've adopted it, calling it "Stakos". I hope it doesn't eat all the food.

28th Hematite 204:
Some Migrants arrive. I do hope things stop happening, my pen is beginning to run out of ink.

3rd Limestone 204:
A catapult has been built ontop of the tomb in the main fortress, this should give us an even greater edge if the Goblins attack from that way again. Hopefully we can find another idiot dwarf to man one here!

16th Limestone 204:
A medium-sized Goblin force attacked from the North, 19 Goblins in total. We mobilised immediately, but did not send any troops to help, due to the success of our forces last time. This proved to be folly.

The new catapult was not even fired - the Goblins were assaulting the walls before the operator could get near the device. The Squad on the walls opened fire, managing to take out a trio of goblins before they reached the gate - the rest stormed through. They stormed up the stairways to attack the marksdwarfs on the walls. Shem Kibtathtat, the leader of "The Robustness Of Merchants" was killed. Adil Regom took command of the Squad. Rith Arakast was infuriated at the death of his friend, Shem, and charged the goblin horde, firing his crossbow point blank into the horde. He slew two Goblins before a pikegoblin skewered him. Other squads were in the courtyard, as they rushed to their positions. They fired several volleys of bolts into the Goblins, slaughtering three and wounding two. A Fortress Guard also joined in, wounding another Goblin. The rest of the Goblins could take no more of the dwarfs vengance, and the remaining eight fled, the three wounded crawling after them. They left in their wake eight dead Goblins, two dead dwarfs, and one lightly wounded dwarf of the Fortress Guard. We have learnt never to under-estimate our enemies again. It is a lesson taught with blood.
