I usually make a do-nothing work detail called "citizen" and assign all of my dwarfs to it. Then when migrants show up, I look for any dwarf that is not part of that work detail. From there i do whatever i need to do, like choose which ones are fit for the military, then I add them all to the work detail.

At the moment, a cart going sufficiently fast on a corner will derail. At the moment this can be prevented with walls, but I would like to see a high speed (banked) corner. With this a cart of any speed above a certain point will traverse the turn without derailment. Conversely, a cart that is going too slow over the turn will simply derail.

The opposite of this would also be useful. I hate how after 30 shots, archers just charge in like lunatics.

I agree that hidden engravings look jarring. It's very hard to tell what is a wall and what isn't. With that being said, I don't think they should disappear altogether, perhaps there is some kind of middle-ground.

It seems very strange to me that books can not be about herbalism, considering how many of our early books were just plant manuals.

ps. learning via books and discussion is painfully slow, I feel like it should be improved.

I'm sure this won't work due to how display cases will be implemented, but wouldn't it be cool if you could link display cases like levers? That way when a kobold opens it to take the the beloved yak bone earring, it opens the floodgate and locks the room.

Metal casting seems like a strange omission from DF. Right now furniture (including anvils) can only be forged. Imagine for a moment making a iron chair or floodgate with a hammer and anvil. This also fixes the problem of the first anvil, as it stands right now Toady is going to have to right it in to the myth generator.

I think it would improve the game, remove a newbie trap and it has next to no technical difficulty.

I went underground looking for some more consistent fights. I found my way down to the 2nd cave level but now I am getting thirsty. I was able to find a water supply but it is laced with mud. Is there any way to drink underground? If not, is there any way to navigate to a dwarven tunnel or something like that? I see a map when I rest but I cant seem to see it any other way.

I was listening to the podcast from incGamers. On the subject of instrument names, I for one love the idea of instrument types having their own names. They should be simple 1-2 syllable names so they can be easily remembered and recognized. As for the problem of identifying their types, it could be done simply adding a suffix. So +Sigun, string instrument+ or *Omrin, percussion instrument* and so on. As well as summarizing the instrument, if you have already seen the description if the item, the suffix will help you remember what it was.

I am 7 years into a fortress and I am running into an issue. I am keeping up well on tunics trousers and shoes, however items like caps capes gloves hoods ect. are getting tattered but not replaced; It is starting to create a lot of bad thoughts. Is there an easy way to get rid of non essential clothing items?
