General Discussion / PSA: easy Steam UI fix
« on: October 31, 2019, 05:58:03 pm »
Now, I'm sure most of you computer whizzes (the ones that bother with Steam, at least) have fixed this yourselves already, but for the rest of us I want to share this simple, quick and easy video detailing how to revert certain changes of Steam's terrible recent update, whilst also adding an option to block future updates.

Even I found it nice and easy to implement, and I am comparatively shit with computers. So, have at it! :)

Play With Your Buddies / Let's Play 9th Company - Roots of Terror!
« on: November 07, 2016, 06:21:55 am »
So, I picked up this game a while ago while it was discounted on Steam. Seems to be some sort of squad-based, turn-based strategy game in the vein of things like 7,62, UFO: Aftermath, certain entries in the X-Com series and that sort of thing, set during the Soviet-Afghan War, following a group of rookie soldiers and apparently based on true events.

Who knows, really. That's sadly not a topic I'm very knowledgeable about, as interesting as it is. Expect plenty of stupid "In Soviet Russia..." jokes to fill space.
I'm just going to go in and play this completely blind- apart from glancing at a couple of screenshots on the Steam page, the above description is basically all I know about it. Hopefully it has some ability to rename your soldiers so that I can dorf y'all, but as it is supposedly based upon real events and people I'm not sure that will be the case.

This is my first LP, so don't expect anything great. I don't even know if this thing will run properly on my computer. :P
If the game turns out to be utter garbage, you guys will probably have to crack the whip if you want me to bother updating it. Ehh, let's just start the game and take a nice screenshot to cap off this first post, shall we? ...Oh wait. It's installing DirectX. Please stand by.

One of those blurry buttons, the top one, actually says New Game, so I'm gonna press that.
Obviously I have no idea what I'm doing. I'm not sure if Steam is to blame for the screenshots being such a strange resolution, or if it's Postimg's fault.
Either way, I guess I'd probably be better off just posting them as tiny images until someone suggests a way to fix this. Oh well whatever.
...Wait! I just figured it out, this dumb website defaults to linking you to thumbnails. -_-
Ugh, well, learning process, right? No need to spam up the thread with huge images of the starting sequence anyway. You can click on them to view the full size if you feel the need to for some strange reason.

I guess I'll... post images of the new-game-starting process in the next post? Good enough for me.

General Discussion / Things that made you EXCITED today

Things that made you excited today
(Also known as the Hype thread)

Sorry but I am far too excited right now to not create this thread. Please, use it to babble excitedly about whatever's got you hyped, feed the flames of other people's excitement, and perhaps have some actual, rational discussion about the things people bring up. Also, feel free to point out however many excitement threads I may have missed.

Oh and even if you find something quite the opposite of exciting, don't go shooting it down if someone else is really keen for it.
If you really need to state your lack of interest in a discussion, fine, just don't be mean.

Anyway, to kick things off, there is now not one but two things I am quietly buzzing away with excitement for.

First, in three days it is the 5th of May, and to celebrate some unlikely military victory in the 1800s one of my favourite chains of Mexican restaurants is having a pretty excellent special- $5 burritos and $5 coronas! I have been getting amped for this for quite some time; I have $30 set aside (for the trip into the city to the most convenient store as well as for burritos+beer) and plan on having a serious feast.

No doubt I'll be suffering afterwards due to my habit of asking for added habanero sauce, but on the day it's going to be the most insanely delicious thing ever.
Not sure how many burritos I can eat in one day, but I plan on finding out.

Next up, we have Battlefield 5. Now my friend+housemate and I both still regularly play BF4, despite its many, irritating faults, but I wasn't terribly excited for another entry in what has become a terribly bland, repetitive series and was never one of my favourites in the first place.
But, after another housemate mentioned that he heard the next game would be set back in WW2, I perked up a little. WW2 games have fallen out of fashion lately, which is sad since it's a far more interesting setting than modern/near future rubbish.
After a bit of Googling, however, I discovered a "report" that Battlefield 5 will be set in not the second but the First World War.

I nearly shat my pants with excitement at that moment. A World War One first-person shooter would be the height of fantastic amazeballs.
I can't recall ever playing a shooter set in WW1, despite always imagining how cool that would be. If this is true I will be over the moon!
Even if the devs fuck it up terribly with their AAA stupidity (as they doubtless will) the setting is unused enough that it'll be fascinating anyway.
And if they pull it off well, it will be amazing.

Anyway! That's enough gushing from me! I'm going to go back to daydreaming about burritos and hopefully reading what y'all are excited about, if this takes off.

General Discussion / Weather Thread
« on: December 18, 2015, 11:50:12 pm »
This is a thread for the discussion and appreciation of weather around the world.
Discuss the current weather you are, what you think of it, and how you would prefer the weather to behave.
Here, it is currently a lovely 42 degrees. Celsius, of course- there is no place for whatever strange, foreign units of temperature you may come up with in this thread be sure to make a note if you are using some weird other unit so as to avoid confusion.

Anyway, lately most warm days here have been accompanied by high winds that kinda spoil the fun, but today it is fairly still.
Outside is like an oven. I am about to equip my sunglasses and go out for a walk, to see if I could possibly become any sweatier than I already am inside.

DF General Discussion / Festivals
« on: December 03, 2015, 10:43:15 am »
This update seems to have added a variety of different festivals and celebrations to worldgen.
Has anyone had any interesting or strange ones yet?

Apart from that I've mostly seen fairly standard things, like processions and ceremonies and such. These are a bit odd, though!
I haven't delved into fort mode yet, been having crashes when I try. I wonder if players can hold their own celebrations?

Seriously, night creatures seem to have benefited a great deal from the new changes to combat.
I understand now just why every settlement I've visited in the new version has been living in fear of them... finally encountered one (as a 'group' on the travel map) and it tore apart my companion and then, when I tried to sneak up and headstab it, it turned around and charged at me.
It had several moves for every one of mine, and ended up pulping my hand with its first punch... followed by my head.

Time to get together a bigger, better-equipped group and try again, I guess.
Anyone else finding night creatures a lot tougher than they were previously?

General Discussion / The Comic Book Thread!
« on: June 27, 2014, 05:44:14 am »
A.K.A The Discussion Topic for Connoisseurs of Graphic Novels.

Basically, it's bugged me for some time that we lack a thread dedicated to funnybooks, comic strips, graphic novels and the like.
I figured I'd make this thread for the appreciation of such. I can't think of any good rules for now, except that manga most certainly does not fit under the Comics umbrella, so I'll just start by listing some of my current favourite titles.

Stray Bullets is definitely my favourite comic at the moment. Gritty crime noir, human drama, coming-of-age tale... I don't know what it's best described as, but it pulls off all of those and more. From the moment I discovered it and read issue 41, which packed in more suspense, character development and action than most comics fit into several issues, I was hooked.
Definitely recommended, even if the black-and-white artwork may not seem "fancy" to some.

Drumhellar is always a fun read. It follows the adventures of Drum Hellar, creepy hippy psychedelic detective. Contains plenty of supernatural themes, mind-altering substances, and not a few bad puns. Really, really bad puns- the best kind. Sometimes the pacing of the comic isn't too great, in my opinion, but Riley Rossmo's art is awesome, it's funny, and overall it's always entertaining.

Sheltered: A Pre-Apocalyptic Tale. Not too much I can say about this one without spoiling things, but from the first issue you will be shocked by the content, awed by the artwork and fear for the main character/s. One recent issue contained what has to be one of the most satisfying, triumphant moments in comic-book history, or at least the part of comic-book history I'm privy to.
This is a pretty useless writeup in hindsight, but... go read it. Best I can do. *shrug*

Manifest Destiny follows Lewis and Clark's expedition across a rather different version of North America.
Expect entertaining characters, supernatural creepiness, action and, of course, absolutely gorgeous artwork. Don't worry, it's still very entertaining even for those without much knowledge of American history. I certainly fall into that category, although this comic kinda makes me want to read up on it at times.

The Stuff of Legend really appeals to my inner child whilst still satisfying my (more-or-less) adult mind- imagine Toy Story during the days of World War Two, where a young English boy whose father is off fighting in the war is kidnapped by the bogeyman who lives in his bedroom cupboard, ruling over a strange alternate dimension peopled by the abandoned toys of the past.
A force of the boy's current favourite toys, along with his pet dog, venture into the strange realm called The Dark to rescue him, lead by a toy soldier named Colonel. In The Dark they, and the abandoned toys who have kidnapped their owner, become 'real', full-sized and alive rather than their previous toy selves.
It's not only a beautiful book, it's very well-written as well, and the characters are quite real despite being, you know, children's toys.
Really want to pick up the second collection of this soon, it's great.

Finally, Undertow. A surreal, sci-fi romp following a bunch of humanoid sea creatures whose Atlantean society is threatened by foes both inside and out, in a world where humans are primitive hairy apes and the ocean is home to the planet's most advanced life.
To be quite honest with you, I feel like I don't understand a lot of what goes on in this comic even a few issues in, but it's exciting regardless and it looks damn pretty.

That's all I can be bothered writing for now. Please, discuss your favourite comics/graphic novels/comic strips/whatever!
Apart from manga and the like, that is.
I might pretty up this OP and add more comics at some point, who knows!
