DF Suggestions / Turn off auto-forbid for dropped items in Arena

Purely a minor aesthetic suggestion, but since there aren't any options in Arena to turn auto-forbid for dropped items on or off, how about having it off as default?
The padlock which appears over bodies and dropped weapons just doesn't look very pretty when trying to follow an Arena fight.

How moddable is the interface right now?
The embark screen neighbors list being cut off after 4 civs is incredibly frustrating for testing my mod. Any way to make that rectangle a bit longer?

DF Gameplay Questions / Cloak no longer working as part of my uniform

Did something change with layers in 50.0x?
I used to equip my dwarves with mail shirt, breastplate and cloak. Cloak no longer seems to be working.

Looking at equipment details, some dwarves are actually being assigned a cloak, but they never put it on. How will my Captain of the Guard exert his authority without his red silk cloak now?!

Has this always been a thing, or is it new for 50.0x?
I have multiple bad guys walking in (at different times) and being caught in a single cage trap.

Handy. But did cages really need to be even more powerful than they already are?

(Apparently can't create a new account at wiki right now - could someone with copious amounts of free time make an edit, thanks).

Unicorns have been erroneously marked "genderless" (presumably some kind of in-joke, have no idea).
Since the definition of this is a creature without male/female castes, it's never been true.

Anyone else experiencing monastery spam in longer worlds?
Might just be because I have so many civs in my mod and therefore way too many gods.


Have a feeling this was also a thing in 47.05 too.

Seems that you have to set the difficulty settings every time you start a new fortress which is really frustrating when you want to use custom settings.
We could set these once in the advanced worldgen settings/entity raws in previous versions and never have to worry about it again. Would be nice to be able to do that again. I know the way I want my game setup, and I know the difficulty settings that work specifically for my mod.

Would be nice to get civ dependent exact triggers back again too as an option.

I love the new event ticker in worldgen. My computer is busy churning away at a thousand year old busy world right now, and I find myself wondering who exactly are "The Frilly Pulley-Basement" that are constantly at war and concluding peace treaties with everyone.

I can pause and search for them on my map, as I assume they are a civ. But the ability to click on the name in the abridged chronicle and get a bit of info on them would be nice. If not full blown Legends Mode, then just the summary line of the entity would be good.

Especially for the more obscure entities like that one mercenary band who every civ seems to have hired for their wars so far.

Sure, sure, write it on a piece of paper and go find out later in Legends Mode. But if it's possible technically, this would be a nice addition to worldgen for those of us that enjoy generating words that are far too big/old/densely populated.

DF Gameplay Questions / Creating and editing uniforms

Seems to be no way to simply create and edit standard uniforms with the new military interface?
Or you can, but first you have to make a squad. Then you can create a new uniform, but if you need to go back and change something, there's no edit button. It seems like you have to assign it to a squad, then adjust the uniform by selecting that squad. At which point the name has disappeared (bug presumably). Or am I missing something about the way this all works? It's really not very intuitive compared to the old version.

I assume all these uniforms can be used when new squads are made, same as the old version? It's quite annoying having the interface apparently link uniforms to specific squads.

DF Suggestions / On-screen Text announcements for classic display

While there is added Fun value in clicking on an icon that I didn't notice for 10 minutes and reading "the agitated capybara is fighting!", I would much rather have the option of setting an on-screen text announcement in the style of previous versions when playing with an ascii tileset. (With options, so we can banish the job cancelled announcements to an icon).

Sure, we miss the text sometimes, which is fine. But I miss the new icons much more, and likely they'll be even less noticeable when playing Classic. 

(And of course, as other suggestions have noted, an Announcements window, output to gamelog.txt and a combat reports screen would be nice to have back).

DF General Discussion / On late maturing dwarves

I see Dwarves remain children until 18 in 50.01 (as opposed to 12 up until now).

Increasing the age seems to be a case of "it was inevitable", so not gonna argue that. But 18 seems awfully high. Twelve seems a lot more "medieval themed fantasy game" to me. Maybe 16 as Google says that's when medieval humans could become soldiers. Dwarves live longer than humans, so perhaps it's all just reasonable.

Just updating my mods and found myself wavering over updating from 12 to 18, wonder if anyone has any thoughts on medieval society or general trends in fantasy RPGs these days? Six extra years of damn kids running around the fortress isn't too appealing. And it's my mod, I don't have whatever pressures Toady is under. (Humans increased from 12 to 18 too).

DF Suggestions / Stay paused when switching between menus

Currently the game auto-pauses when opening the Citizen Information screen, then when you click on a dwarf to actually view his stats close up, pause switches off.

Having to keep an eye on the pause button to see when it suddenly decides to switch to play is so frustrating.

Sure, you can pause the game before opening the menu and it will stay paused. But, then why bother having the auto-pause at all?

Where are the Difficulty Settings saved in Steam Dorf?
There are options which used to be in the init settings, like guildhalls and priests which I just want to set in advance for my mod. Don't want to have to open up the game to fiddle with them them every time I generate a new world.

Hmm. Steam version seems to have lost the export Legends data options.
Damn, that's disappointing. Unless there's a hidden function somewhere.
