The continuation of this little snippet, of course.
As anyone who reads my signature would know, I'm pretty fond of weird formats (Multiverse skype!), and what with Red Moon stealing all the attention and saving me from needing to post anywhere else, I figured it was a good time to lay out my latest weird idea.

Basically, the format goes something like this. The RP has two IC threads. Everyone has two characters, one for each thread. Each thread is essentially a separate plotline- one thread may effect the other, but the characters never interact directly. Don't cross the streams. I know, it sounds complicated, but you guys already post in like, forty RPs each, it can't be that bad. :P

The main benefit of this format is that the threads can switch off between shenanigans and plot. When one is doing serious business plot advancing things, the other can be having fun and fooling around and whatever you want. Ideally, this keeps people from getting bored of the lack of shenanigans and keeps people from getting tired of the lack of plot. Pretty much, both of those sentiments being expressed in quick succession is what inspired the idea in the first place. (I'll probably draft an assistant GM or two to make sure we don't have any inopportune lapses in plot coverage. And by assistant GM I mean USEC_OFFICER, of course.)

Act 1
HELLO WORLD
The Author is Dead

The scene is a small tunnel, which, though it fades to white on both sides, has a series of flashing NO EXIT signs on the left, forming a barrier across the  space preventing exit from the stage (go figure). The rest of the tunnel is simple wire frame outline, 1s and 0s visible drifting in the blackness beyond it.

The fourth wall is ACTIVE.

Enter (characters participating), stage left.

Activating consciousness....
Consciousness activated. Prepared to transcribe dialogue. Commencing Scene 1.

A topic for me trying to work out how to balance the system. Expect lots of stumbling and failure for a while. :P

More to come, just putting this stuff down while I figure out how this thing goes.

You could be anyone, anywhere, anywhen. Anywho, the  main point is that you're all living your various possibly normal lives to begin with. Of course, you need not be normal. In fact, it's almost preferable  you're not normal.

Then, somehow, you find yourself with a device. A program. A convenient touch screen on a river. Whatever it is, it connects you to a world beyond your own. Several, in fact.

((Basically: if Skype could talk over dimensions (alternative, something something Homestuck). And possibly other internet type things, who knows.

The only definite rule  which I am not breaking until I find a good way to handle  physical crossovers: No physical crossovers.

That said, aside from that, knock yourself out! Make your own plots and relations and stuff, I don't mind. In fact, I could in theory step out and let a sufficiently dedicated playerbase just run itself. Of course, I doubt I'll be that lucky, so I won't mind making a character myself.))

The ants can kiss our shiny chitinous abdomens!

((In other news, above link= inspiration. Going to school now, but posting this here so people can give me ideas, since I'm not totally sure about mechanics just yet. :P)

Basically, good old inventory-based democrabrain adventure in the vein of Man of SCIENCE! and You Are Wizard!, but set in a steampunk-esque world with light fantasy elements.

To start it off: Known civilization lives in caves: the air above ground drives most sentients mad, making simple things like geniuine oak wood worth a fortune. Some places don't even believe in the surface, a la TTGL.  The world is full of tunnels and really big freaking caverns, normally perfect for generic dark elves, but in this case mostly the home of plain old humans. As for this mythical steampunk, it's steam engines and electric motors: internal combustion is not a thing, except in humans of course. ;) Science is also fairly applicable to magic, which mostly applies to certain magical creatures: magic is not a thing that most can learn, discover, or even be born with. Basically, wizards are not  a thing, and magic items are unlikely to be a thing.

Better than a computer translator, that is.  ;)

So the deal is, I need some things translated into Latin. What things? It's a secret!~ But they are only English sentences, worry not. I'm not asking anyone to translate a book. Which is good, since I need them pretty soon.

PM me if you're up for it.

A deranged madmangame the likes of which are few and far between!
...Except on Bay 12, that is.  ;)

This game can be thought of as working backwards from science. Instead of discovering the way the world works, you're setting it out, and making up particles and physicals and interactions and things along those lines. I may throw in some pictures in MSPaint at some point, just cuz.

As you create your hypothetical universe's building blocks, you get to see what happens with your universe. Stars? Planets? Life? Space mushrooms? Sentient interstellar medium? Something else entirely? Who knows?

Anyways, feel free to suggest anything, anything whatsoever. Keep in mind, of course, that new particles/laws/interactions take effect instantly: you don't get to put them in all at once. Unless you post them all at once, of course, but I somehow doubt that happening.  :P Also, let's not just having boring atoms and quarks and other real objects. Strange and unusual makes for more !!FUN!!
----
Notes: The universe is a torus!

Empty space is occupied by Ether, a massless, sentient particle. They tend to be quite hot.

Hot and cold are defined by Fridgonic particles. The more of these in something, the colder it is. Fridigonic is the opposite of energy.

The basic unit of normal matter is the lutefisk, a manifestation of energy. Lutefisk particles can bond with each other to form various phlegm elements. Bonds come from additional energy.

Basic Phlegm elements include single lutefisk (?), double(?), triangular (3, ?) double-triangle, 4a (four in a rhombus with a single bond across the center, phlogistion) and 3-polymer, 3a (?)

Elan is a single lutefisk particle. Two Elans combine to form element 2, taking in Fridgonic in the process and repelling the Ether.

Phlogistion
is a double-triangle arrangement of lutefisk. Phlogistion contains large amounts of energy in its bonds.

Quantum Particles. These might or might not exist. An area with a high concentration of particles will suffer from uncertainty, ie everyone/everything inside will disappear(and reappear elsewhere) once told or given their name(As soon as they are told their name they forget were they are supposed to be). Quantum particles tend to concentrate around boxes and cats.

Strange particle : This particle is an enigma. It stops when observed (but not seen), measured, quantified or in any way objected to anything minutely related to the scientific method. Its properties are of little significance.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / The Land of Lost Dimensions: Location topic.
« on: February 15, 2011, 06:27:57 pm »
An organizational device.

BASIC STRUCTURE:

Locations in green are fully explained.
Locations in yellow are partially explained, but could be improved.
Locations in red have little to no details whatsoever.
Locations in blue are for some reason controversial and as such it may be impossible to obtain one single set of information that is correct.
Various numbers of - may be used for sublocations.

LOCATION TIME:

Twi-Rock:
The planet that most of us are on. Cold, but green and relatively earthlike. No notable features. All the below locations are land until we get to the ships.

Underground Fort:
The little-used base that lies underground. Has various necessities- kitchen, dining hall, storerooms, and bedrooms. Also a hospital and a metalworking shop. And I think a garden.

-Thera's Lair:
The cavern with a mountain of silk that is Thera's room. She weaves in here, plays in here, likes to sleep in here. Some people like the silk.

Aegis's House: Aegis's house. Has a secret passage, I believe, and some nice aquariums. But definitely the passage.

Glass Palace: Lavi's enormous house, made out of opaque glass. Home of many Salamanders, and a very good glassworks.

-Taric's Garden: Where Taric plants things.

Lavi's Desert: The great big desert that was made for Lavi. Has a number of Salamander lairs in it.

GDI Base: The home of Phantom's GDI. A bit of a mess, but it works. Major locations include the Movie Theater, the Construction Yard, and of course the bars. Unless those died.

-Anatoly's Tower: The guard tower where Anatoly the sniper spends his shift, among other people less notable. Practically a house.

The Ark:Kata and Ivy's ship. Has a LOT of stuff on it. EDITED: There's a garden, a bridge, a hospital, a whole bunch of awesome rooms, recreation facilities, and for some reason, a coffee machine. And some other stuff. Based on and usually stuck on Twi-Rock.

-Infirmary/Thera's Room:
High-tech medical center that is also connected to Thera's room on the Ark.

Ochita's Ship:
Duh. Has bar and bedrooms and a WEIRD ROOM that transports things. Usually on Twi-Rock.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Civilization builder! Starting.
« on: January 19, 2011, 07:42:47 pm »
A democraciv (yes, democraciv, like democrabrain but with civ) forum game of no small renown that I haven't actually seen.
Control a young CIVILIZATION or CULTURE or TRIBE or NATION or WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE TO CALL IT. Lead it through its beginnings and into WORLD CONQUEST! Alternatively, do something else.

But before we do anything, we will need to set some parameters.
First I would like a SETTING and a RACE, because I suspect that the former may influence your choice of the latter, in case you want to be something other than human. Setting means world size, tech level, precense or absence of magic, noteworthy physics, so on and so on. Race is self explanatory. Species, if you prefer.

Okay, so this none other than a forum game.
You are an ANIMAL! An animal who will, at some point, become smart and conquer the world! Or something.
Anyways, yeah. Modern day Earth(possibly with a few strange creatures here and there), democrabrain, ANIMAL OF YOUR CHOICE: You'll be voting for it. However, while I'll try to do what everyone wants, there are a few rules, and some things are off-limits. I may choose to strike out particular animals for whatever reason. Sorry about that. :(

First, restrictions and suggestions on what you should vote for:

Now, how the voting is actually going to go:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

TL:DR: VOTE FOR AN ANIMAL TO BE. GO!

The question is: Do clouds of smoke block vision?
If so, can I use this to fool invaders into thinking there's no way into my fortress?
And what would work the best to achieve this goal?
For some reason, I have an urge to make at least one fort with a smoke screen around it as defense, powered by burning graphite or lignite or what have you.

Currently envisioning it as either individual pits of flammable material set on fire with grates on top, or a long trench around my base.

How would I do this? et cetera

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / CAST ICE TOWER.
« on: December 04, 2010, 03:34:01 pm »
Okay, so I embarked in this one area that happens to be really freaking cold.
It stays below freezing year-round. There's a river, but it is also frozen the entire year, though I may be able to remedy this with lava. It would help if I could see more of said river...

Surprisingly, I'm not dead yet. Sadly, however, the game decided to start me off on the other side of the map from the section with anything of immediate use (a taiga area: trees and plants), and it's a pretty big embark. Nonetheless, if I survive, I have a plan.

This plan requires a source of water, preferably an infinite one (underground sea). I will construct a cast somewhere outside where I plan to put the tower. The cast will notably have a roof, and that's extremely important. I may or may not construct the cast with a floor plan; it depends on whether it'll be easier to mine out the rooms or build it (from my experience, freezing water destroys ramps, and it probably does so with stairs).
Next, I will make a covered tunnel that pumps water from my reservoir to the top of the cast without freezing, powered by whatever the heck I can make work. Most likely, that'd be elevated windmills, though I could place some waterwheels along my pump system to power it as well. Whichever works... In any event, also note that I'll have a floodgate where the water goes into the cast, so I can prevent backups.

So, once I have all this done, I'll pump the water into the cast, and close the floodgate once it's full. THEN! I will deconstruct some part of the roof. The water is exposed to the outdoor temperature and boom, water freezes into ice. Hopefully, anyways. Get rid of the cast (painstakingly) and you have a CAST ICE TOWER.

Why am I doing this?

Simply because I'm hoping that I'll be able to engrave the ice. >_>

Is this even possible?

Other Games / Battleships Forever: It still lives. Again.
« on: December 04, 2010, 12:39:51 pm »
Such dead threads include the closest thing to a general BSF topic on the forum from what I can tell.
Anyways!
http://www.wyrdysm.com/games.php
Battleships Forever (BSF) is a fairly interesting game that I will inevitably describe horribly.
Basically, you control spaceships. And try to kill other spaceships.
Simple, right?
Wrong.
The game features the ability to create your own ships, maps and encounters from dozens of parts, weapons, modules, and decorations. Plus, there's a huge community, who have done such things and who you can show your creations off to.

You can also play around with ships and terrain in Sandbox, or set up a mission with a goal in an Encounter. Then you can play one.
Also, there's a campaign, and some default game modes.

Okay, so I was doing this awesome fort with an awesomely long name. Ushilas Katthir Sirab, "Icecaves the Nourishment of Warmth".

So I had this neat little base here, and then I had a water problem.
See, it's pretty cold down here. And the river is only flowing (and some pools are only liquid) in mid-summer. And when my brewers stopped brewing, I started digging for an aquifier layer.
I didn't find it.
I did find a cavern. With no water. And bad stuff. Then, after I had brewers working again, another one which did have water (not one, but TWO underground seas).
Trouble was, these were both separate from my actual base.

Fast forward to the present.
An ambush of six goblins arrive.
I send some people at them.
They get murdered.
I send EVERYONE at them.
They get murdered. Separately.
Only three survive because they didn't heed the order. One was busy fighting (or endlessly running away from) cave swallows, the other two were doing...something or other down in the second cavern.

I'm now working with these caverns and three dwarves: two miners and a fisher (all of them female, so no kids to increase our population). The gobbos will almost certainly murder them if they come out of the doors.

I'd like to repopulate my base with any migrants I get. Trouble is, I never got underground farms working there, due to people not digging and the lack of water. There's no food source inside the door. Now, if I get any, ANY safe tunnel that links my caverns to my base, it would be a godsend.

Fortunately, the second cavern is a good source of food. There are trees, plants, and some farms, but not many fish from what I gather. I was also able to set up a couple of beds. If I can ever get a trade depot (unlikely), there's a ton of native gold in the second cavern, and native silver in the first. The first cavern is unsafe, though: the cave swallow people are not particularly friendly. The only one who is apparently became so due to killing a dwarf.
Yeah, it didn't make sense to me either.

WHAT I DO?
