Star Control 2 sequel: Children of Infinity
« on: April 26, 2024, 12:45:16 am »

I don't know how many of you remember Star Control 2, the Ur-Quan masters from the nineties?
It was a space-rpg with arcade like combat and a high dose of humor. For me it probably even ranks above DF in the list of best games ever.
It looks like it is finally getting a sequel by it's original creators. The new game will be called Free Stars: Children of Infinity.

It looks like it will stay very close to the original, with a retro feel, and the same arcade combat and humor.

They currently have a kickstarter going, which is already fully funded, but there are always stretch goals that would be very nice to have, so they can certainly use more support. The kickstarter page can be found here :

The kickstarter is currently probably the best source of information on the game, but they also have a website here:

I hear some of you think "but have there not been other sequels"
Yes, that is true, there have been, but they were not made by the original people and have received very mixed reviews

Star control 3 was made by Accolade after Toys for Bob lost the rights to the series. It is generally considered to be a dissapointment by fans, and the new game will likely act as if this whole thing never happened.

More recently Star Control Origins was made by Stardock. This is a very decent and fun game in my opinion, but takes place in a different universe with none of the original aliens and storylines.

Stardock does have the IP rights for the Star Control name, but not to the original content that Toys for Bob created. For the new game this is the other way around, the creators of the original game can and will use the old content and storylines, but can't use the Star Control name.

I would join the kickstarter. But they don't have a regular way to pay without credit card in this day and age. So I'll just get it on steam.

Yes that annoyed me too, probably has something to do with them only charging you when the kickstarter reaches its goal, or is final. That might be hard to set up with different payment methods.

I got into Ur-Quan Masters pretty late, and never finished it. Now I have to get back to it.

Only a few days left in the kickstarter. Looks like they won't make the voice-over stretch goal, but all the other important ones have been reached.

I got into Ur-Quan Masters pretty late, and never finished it. Now I have to get back to it.

For those that want to play the old game (originally released as Star Control 2), it's good to know that there are a lot of different versions of the Ur-quan masters released by different parties. All of these are the same game with some important differences, explained below.

Star control 1 and 2: Sold by Stardock on steam, currently for 3.99.
Free stars: The Ur-Quan masters, freely downloadable from steam by pistol shrimp games, who are now making children of infinity.
The Ur-Quan masters HD megamod; Despite what the name implies, this is the full game, with optional fan made improvements. Also free.

For the best gameplay experience you are probably best off downloading the megamod as it supports optional HD graphics, and quality of life improvements, but downloading the Free stars version is also nice to give the original authors some recognition.  Despite being sold for actual money, the Stardock version is the worst, as it lacks voice-overs, and is the most basic version of all three.

Also note that the game does not keep a quest log or notes! You have to write down hints yourself on actual paper, this game is from the nineties when this was normal. There is time to fool around while exploring, but be aware that if you don't get your act together in the game at some point, really bad things will start to happen after a certain amount of time has passed. That said it is probably one of the best games ever, so don't let the above scare you.
