How to get rid of stagnant water in waterskin? (Adventure Mode)

My character was thirsty so I found a small body of water and decided to fill up my waterskin for later. I can't get my character to drink the stagnant water, so I want to know how to empty the waterskin do I can fill it with drink-able water. Any help's appreciated, I'm somewhat new to adventure mode.

Just drop it, it should be droppable like any other item.

You can just pour the water onto the ground (by dropping it, I think?). Bonus being that the new puddle of water you create is not only fresh, but also provides you with a full waterskin.
