Not worth resurrecting an old thread, but Factorio's modding community is weird.

Other Games / Re: Epic Free Game of the Week

We've got 2 games again this week.
Jitsu Squad - An indie co-op fighter. It's supposed to be like Marvel vs Capcom with 4 characters you don't know or Streets of Rage. Plays single player as well. Works with Windows 7.

Mighty Fight Federation - It looks like Dead or Alive starring game characters you don't know or care about, like Yooka & Laylee or Hyerion? There's a paid DLC for the characters from the new River City Ransom, and you won't recognize them without a label.

Game's made an executive decision to not let me have fun.

Found a back room and robbed it. Police on me, entirely expected, wound up spending as much as I got from the room on my bounty because one officer decided to charge his horse into mine, knocking both of us off and killing him. Apparently I'm guilty of that.

A cat died for some utterly unknown reason. I picked it up and a person immediately called the police on me for "animal cruelty". Pay off that fine too, get on my horse and instead of doing that Arthur runs another 5m away to strangle someone, netting me *another* bounty. I try to surrender, and halfway through surrendering the police just decide to shoot me.

Try to get a perfect beaver pelt or several. Virtually no perfect beaver spawns, and every single one runs into the water. Unlike every other animal in the game, it seems you can't lasso a beaver's corpse which means that I can't drag them to shore and thus can't harvest their hides. I finally get a hold of one on the West Elizabeth side of the southern state border where I'm not wanted dead or alive. Despite that, a swarm, and I mean a swarm of something like 10, bounty hunters all descend upon me within a matter of five seconds. Might as well have been under direct fire from a machine gun, I went from full hp to dead in 2 seconds, losing me the one and only perfect beaver pelt I'd been able to get a hold of.

At that point I'd decided the game was sick of me trying to enjoy myself today, so I've now rage quit.

Red Dead Redemption 2

For a well-liked game, it's incredibly buggy/poorly-designed. You're guilty of all crimes that happen near you, the game has an insane amount of memory leak (I've played for as much as 10 minutes at one point, but now can only manage 5, which is not enough to be able to get far enough in the tutorial to save again), and has Bethesda-levels of people bouncing into space/through the ground.

I've got no insight into either of the free games offered this week, but since no one else has posted anything yet...

There's two games being offered: Surviving the Aftermath and Earthlock.

Aftermath appears to be a post-apocalyptic colony sim, while Earthlock seems to be an RPG - in the JRPG tradition, if I'm interpreting the trailer and text description correctly.

Thank you for the back-up. Too tired yesterday.

This week's game is Golden Light.

The official description is
Quote
Eat weapons, be scared and question your own mind in this Survival-Horror FPS Prop Hunt Roguelike about meat. Walls are watching you!

I can't tell if it's going to be great or terrible, but you should watch the video. It's supposed to be a weird comedy horror game.

I played cookie clicker for a while, before I found out offline gains are only available several months into playing the game. It was mildly amusing up until that.

Are there any good clickers/idle games that don't require a 24-hour connection?

Yeah, I've heard Turnip Boy has some interesting ideas, teaches you how to use them, and then never uses them again. Also, it's a zelda-like game that requires Windows 10 to handle the very advanced graphics.

Evil Within is definitely worth playing.

Good to hear it. The sequel is one of two games this week.

The other game is Tandem: a Tale of Shadows. It's a puzzle platformer where you control a little girl and her teddy bear trying to solve a magician's disappearance.

Finished Demon’s Souls, kind of underwhelming. Don’t think I scratched the surface too much, but beyond that the last six or seven bosses I did were pretty easy and not that memorable, other than the Storm King, that was probably the highlight of the game.

Might do another run at some point; I was going to get to Ed and see if I could get Northern Regalia before remembering I’d have to fight the Firelurker first, and that was one of the two bosses I had the most trouble with. Ah well, onto Disco Elysium.

Yeah, having the fight your least favorite boss is only fun in the real world.

To get used to how Disco Elysium is supposed to work, do a run trying to see how quickly you can die. Try everything, read everyone's reactions, but make bad decisions on purpose. Helps you relax and realize you don't need to always need to make the most optimal choice.

Has anyone tried A Hero's Rest?

It looks potentially interesting, but I can't find reviews of it, because it's an indie game. It's 20% off now, so I'm thinking about it.

This week we got 2 games.

Eternal Threads is a first-person puzzle game about timelines. Sounds cool, although I'd probably have heard about it if it was as great as I hope it is.

The Evil Within is a Resident-Evil-like game by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.

This week we have:
Blazing Sails - a pirate-themed battle royale game.
Q.U.B.E. 10th edition remake and Q.U.B.E. 2, inlcuding DLC. They're first-person puzzlers.

Can recommend Golden Sun 1 & 2. No real reflexes needed.

The carry spell requires pixel-perfect usage, but it's needed for like 2 puzzles in the first game. Not sure if it improved in the second game or not.

Edit: I think I got confused and thought carry and lift were the same spell. Although I'm still mad about that plot point (?) where you need to stand in exactly the correct spot to lift a boulder off someone.

I've been running through games on Epic I grabbed, but never got around to trying, because I got stuck at a puzzle in Train Valley 2 where I'm not even sure how to get a track from a building to any area accessible by anything else without having to resort to a guide *again*. I enjoyed the game up until all of the puzzles became "you'll never guess how to connect this building to anything so you can start trying to do the logistics stuff the game is based around, because we intentionally made it difficult to read the terrain. Fuck you." Puzzle games (and some others from all genres) love making the "what am I supposed to do? what are the rules? a puzzle that you need to solve before you can solve the actual puzzle, because it's easier than making something clever. Or they're just bad at communicating.

The Forest Quartet: puzzle game. Pretty. I got stuck at a puzzle where I have 6 poles that I can rotate, which spins 3 different levels of balls. Sometimes that balls line up facing a direction if you spin them long enough (usually several minutes). I'm probably supposed to line them all up in a particular way, but don't know what way, have no way of knowing if I got one or more correct, and got tired of waiting for even a single one to get lined up nicely. Including the 10 minutes trying to figure out this puzzle, I'm around 15 minutes into the game, and don't feel anything keeping me interested.

Out of line: platformer with some puzzles. Figured out the things on the ground that I can jam the spear into are supposed to be levers when the spear is in there, and control platforms. Now I'm on one with a partner who can hit a button for me if I do the right thing while using the lever. I've also trial-and-errored myself into know which spots are for them only and which ones are for me only. One spot I can put their platform spins 2 spiked platforms. They are perpendicular to one another, so I can't get them both at a usable angle, and one side is covered in spikes so the best angle also kills me. I can maybe figure out something so I get stuck on the next puzzle instead, but not being able to tell where I could and could not go without dying repeatedly already frustrated me enough that I need a break.

Black Books: it looks like a deck-builder so far, with choices affecting how you progress through the game. Looks like I'm going to damn my own soul to save my beloved from hell. Metal.

Tried out soulstice and godlike burger. Soulstice isn't a souls-like, despite the name. It's a combo based score keeping fighting game, not a genre I've played a lot of but I think more like devil may cry or the batman games then like darksouls. Seems okay if you like that sorta thing.

I've played games where you run a restaurant and sell the flesh of your customers before, but it's quite a charming idea so I wanted to like godlike burger. On my first try though I found the controls unbearably awkward, in retrospect I suppose you're suppose to use a controller, so I'll try that next time I give it a try. Was left with a little bit of a negative impression from what I have played.

Yeah, I'm actually interested in running Soulstice, because it looks so silly. It's a game; having fun with it is the point. Cool to hear it's not actually a souls-like.

Godburger looks like they tried real hard to make it fake 3d, so I'm not surprised the controls were over-complicated for a game where WASD should be more than enough. Same reason I was joking about it being a flash game that needed the newest DirectX and Windows 10 to handle the graphics engine. Too much effort into things that are not only unnecessary, but make the game worse.
