Started a new adventurer because an outsider in a dead world in this update would miss out on so many features.

So much flavor. Look at all this. Worshipping a god, choosing a background between mountain homes or a hamlet. Dwarves must have hamlets then.

And I started in the forges. I'm in a mountainhome. I started in a mountainhome guys. Ermagerd.

Also I'm getting "500" errors from the forums. She's breaking down cap'n.

I've had several birds die when no dwarves were cutting down trees.  My theory is they can only stay airborne for so long, get tired, and then fall to the ground and break their bones.

I'm in what appears to be a big meeting hall and shop for furniture in the mountain home. dwarves are wandering around and chatting to one another. They are literally walking around, recognizing one another's presence, and speaking to each other.

Dwarf fortresses are apparently too dark for dwarves.

I started with adventure mode in a recognized position. I asked around in the keep for stuff to do, while no one really knew anything several people directed me to a well traveled dwarf by the name of Ast Atticropes. After some further inquiring on the streets I was told to look for him at the Mouth of Esteeming tavern in the eastern part of town. On my way to the tavern I heard a commotion around the corner.

Soon a clothier comes running down the street chased by a reptile man. But this is no ordinary reptile man, this is a captain. Somehow a filthy reptile man made quite a life for himself among the humans. They continue fighting through an import store, the captain's jaws are snapping away at the clothier. The merchants inside draw their knives as they come in but quickly sheathe them once the troublemakers get through.

The captain must have been offended by their drawing of weapons though because he started chasing one of the merchants up a wall and promptly punched his teeth out.

The fact that I asked about a quest, was directed to a traveller whom I also had to be directed to and happening upon some justice being carried out on my way is just awesome.

Here they are fighting while climbing a wall with the teeth littering the ground. It's insane but some day this will all be ironed out and I'll be waiting patiently for that day.

Tried out a reclaim of a pre-generated fortress. It appears as if I've encountered a strange glitch where the superfluously common forges contain thrones instead of anvils.

Perhaps, in a time long forgotten, dwarves sat on nice chairs as they sculpted and formed the molten-hot metals with their bare hands.

This is interesting. While checking out legends mode I found a structure that is new to me, an Underworld Spire. It was easier to type it than screen capture and upload it so this is what it said.

"In a time before time, the iguana devil Os Nightmarebad the Pebble of Crawling thrust a spire of slade up from the underworld, naming it The Wicked Bastion, and established a gateway between worlds in Sinfalmud."

fun to move stealthly (i had some decent Ambusher skill, maybe that helped too) in that camp, trying to avoid the goblin guards spotting you and slay that goblin boss after approaching from his back :)

I was worried my companion (a human crossbowman) would get silly charging and alerting everything, but it seems he's respected the stealth approach too, and we could leave the bandit camp without any trouble, looks like the goblin boss didn't had time to scream and alert the guards.

I just got spat on for killing a vampire who had killed more than three hundred people. And that spit was just counted as fighting, alarming one guy.
Like the post before me, people seem to attack themselves. In a time before time. The year is actually 125, so that's not right. Probably a bug, but I have no idea what causes it.

EDIT: Just noticed that everyone is flashing red, so they probably would be hostile if they knew who I am. I think I might have picked a wrong dialogue choice somewhere.

The new stealth is my favorite thing about .40 so far! I came upon a huddled pack of vultures where each member was facing a different way and they together had a 360° line of sight. Different kinds of animals have different FoVs too.

Yes, i was surprised to see how much awesome the new stealth is, i thought i would just love the climb/jump new mechanics, but stealth is going to be my favorite feature now.

As my character found himself an unfortunate demise at drowning when trying to cross a river ( next time i'll give another level of skill in swimming as novice was obviously ... not enough :D ) i decided to roll a new one and make him a bowman to see if the stealth could apply to hunting.

It was soon enough that i ran into 2 "kestrel men" , and stealth moving into their back, i shot them both , making them fall on the ground in pain (and to my surprise they actually complained, didn't knew i could understand their language). I then moved quickly for the kill with a large dagger and proceeded to stab them (using the "heavy" but slower blow method).

But it appears that stabbing kestrel men in the neck, in the upper body and in the head does not really kill them, sure it make them slowly dying, but it bothered me a bit that i couldn't mercy kill them fast.

Then a 3rd kestrel man i didn't noticed started to panic a lot, as while i was still in stealth, i saw him running around, looking in various directions, confirming that my worry about the AI unable to hear and go alert were unfounded as the guy was obviously aware something bad was around.

Unfortunately for him, my character one shotted him with an arrow directly through the brain.
And finally the 2 other kestrels accepted to die and provided me with good food after butchering, allowing me to not worry to much for a while about hunger thanks to them.

As my character found himself an unfortunate demise at drowning when trying to cross a river ( next time i'll give another level of skill in swimming as novice was obviously ... not enough :D ) i decided to roll a new one and make him a bowman to see if the stealth could apply to hunting.

Eh... I jumped into a river with my adventurer. Legendary swimmer. Broke his feet, bruised lung and tore open his mouth (more open?). Unconsciously drifted to the bottom of a waterfall. No bleeding, just "Mortal Wound" and "Pain". Killed an alligator. (Tried spitting, but didn't hurt it). Swam a bit more, fell down another waterfall. Just stunned. Two more. The last one was larger. Unconscious until drowned.
Thing is, I couldn't climb out while not standing and I found no way out. Seems like rivers are too dangerous to tempt.

So, I spawn in the house of the lady. With good reason, since the rest of the town is entirely deserted. I find two guardsmen and recruit them
I go back and attack the lady because I made a claim and behead her, then become ruler!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In panic one of the priests yelled out that there was a vampire that killed two thousand two hundred thirteen people. No wonder that the town is deserted.

So I started playing as a dwarven demigod and ended up in an underground fortress.
While wandering around the fortress trying to look for someone to murder in a relatively isolated area, I stumble upon the king of the place, Zefon Doorroot. I try to strangle him but he proves too difficult for that, so I just hack his head off and move his corpse elsewhere (and butcher it trying to throw a piece of it into a populated room but nobody seemed to care).

I then proclaim myself as the new ruler of the site and call it Boatmurdered. Just because.
Now I was going around telling my new people the news and this is what I heard them talking about.

(Bombrek is me, Zefon was the former king.)
Yeah, you're a little angry for that?

Ah, Dwarf Fortress. Where people get mildly upset about their kings' deaths...

And I've already accepted 4-5 quests against beasts while trying to find one with a vampire. And also accepted one for one army.
Not a boring life, I guess?

No idea why an elf lady is the leader of the human town though. She was a butcher for 246 years of her life previously. 125 year world. Not bad.

I am also her hearthperson, and she says I should enjoy these times of peace. She doesn't seem worried about bandits, beasts, armies, vermin, abductions and whatever else.

After my previous food hunting that ended with finding and killing some kestrel men , i got some kestrel food out of the butchering.

Later i ran into 2 louse men that i managed to find actually by the odor .

I shot them with arrows and charged with my large dagger.
The first one fell with a stab, the  2nd one managed to run, so i ran after the creature and when i finally catched up i decided to try to use a wrestling grab to see if it could help with making the stab more efficient (as on the kestrel men it was too long) to not make the louse man suffer more.

Unfortunately i grabbed the louse man with the hand i had the dagger on, i didn't notice until i decided to strike, and ... well ...

Spoiler: Conserving Space (click to show/hide)

I am happy to present my third picture of the release!

Story: I declared my claim on the site to the lord of the town, right in his keep. He didn't want to take me seriously, so I cut his head off by the neck. Their child charged at me after seeing this, resulting in an unfortunate death. The bowman you see here is a guard in the nearest tower. When I first approached her, she shouted "Murderer!" and ran towards me, but didn't attack. I convinced her (peacefully!) to cease his futile attack, so she did. For his compliance, I deemed her a candidate to be a hearthperson.

I believe her answer was sarcastic, judging by the fact that he spat at me for talking to her. She's still the hearthperson though, that must be humiliating.

UPDATE:
She's in for a short run as hearthperson. Can't let go of old grudges, she's shooting me with a bow while holding the wall. No, I don't know how she does that. It's a shame she's going to fall, she has talent.

Spoiler: To conserve space (click to show/hide)

UPDATE2: I've convinced her (via agressive negotiations) to stop climbing walls. She willingly gave up her limbs as a promise not to do it. She won't stop attacking though. She will remain my hearthperson. I need to keep her under close watch, lest she does something foolish.

UPDATE3: Having a nice chat with her while she's missing me with... her bites, I guess. Still doesn't have any fear. Prime example of a powerful mind here, perfect personality. Except the grudge-holding. That's getting out of hand.

UPDATE4: Crashed and forgot to save. Story over.

Pictured here is a necromancer annoyed that there was a companion corpse ruined by the wild undead she kinda unleashed upon the world back when she was a dwarf outcast.

So the backstory of how I got to this was I was wandering with a elf and goblin companion and spotted a weird roaming party in the center of a hamlet. when I arrived and look it was a huge pack of undead and they made short work of my 'life is in one word fishing' goblin axewoman and shortly after trying to run away my elven swordswoman and the thing about necromancy is I can't reanimate if they die a messy death.

I tried flying around with a raven in the arena. Flying exerts birds quickly, so when they tire, they 'fall over' -> go prone. But the flying tag remains. Well, until they try to change their pace, when they plummet down.
I think I should add this to the bug tracker.

Actually, it's not changing the pace, I still have to check it. If set to say, fast crawl, birds in the arena still fly (when controlled). I guess they fly until unconscious, but I still need to check.

EDIT: Well, the birds in the arena seem to be content hovering in one place. I'm going to check a save file and see if I can find anything.

Yeah... I really don't advise using anything but hammers against zombies. Slash them and their bodyparts will rise back. Shoot them with crossbows and well... that. They don't need any of their organs, and that's all you'll damage with bolts and spears.

The best thing to do is lure them under a bridge and smash. Or dip them in magma... although they'll probably just climb out of that and attack you while dripping with the stuff.

-snip-

That's good to know.
Also tested spears and they can give the message "the injured part is cloven asunder", which means they can pulverise heads, resulting in the... death? of animated corpses.
Crossbows... are still useless. 83 bolts from a legendary marksman vs a zombie and the best I've done is sever a few limbs, which would come back anyway. The zombie is still attacking.

Husks are still a question, they were always for more resilient, though I guess pulping has an effect.
I'd like to look into sponges and the rumours of BCs, but I need to postpone that for a bit.
Title: Re: DF2014 fresh out of release screenshot share thread
Post by: Spehss _ on July 09, 2014, 01:28:45 pm
I'd think blunt weapons like hammers and maces would still be effective against undead, since there's no chance of cutting off limbs and the pulping can render the undead's limbs useless. Probably. Pulping needs testing.

As far as I've tested it, pulping the upper body with messages such as "it explodes in gore" kills living targets at least. Multiple shots to the same body part also seems to increase the chance of pulping. Multiple stabs with a spear to the head escalated to being "cloven asunder".

So, hydras can now multi-attack with all their heads. They can attack up to seven creatures at once, possibly eleven if they use all claws and use only one attack on each creature. This means that even if surrounded by a creature on all sides they can attack them all at once. Don't know if the AI is smart enough to do that, but it's possible.

I'm sure people have noticed this, but I think it's kinda cool that a new adventurer has everyone he knows from before you took control of him listed in the (Q)uest menu under (p)eople:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Everyone you ever meet or hear about will be listed here with as much information as you know about them. It can alleviate some of the confusion of starting a new game as a Dwarf, because it seems that often when you start, it is in the middle of an attack on your hold, and knowing who is friend and who is foe is crucial if you want to save your home. Or side with the goblins; the way it is right now (broken or not), you can do either. Sometimes, you actually know the goblins in your fortress. Which is odd, but I suppose with how people can take over new sites, integration of peoples might actually be an intended thing.

Hmm... I haven't tried trading with dwarves in the depot yet, and I can't recall if the items were marked as owned/stolen. Somehow dwarves hate my guts by default in adventure mode.

I just grabbed a bunch of goodies from a similar room in a dark fortress and nobody batted an eye, which phrase ties in handily with the reason I came to post in this thread—at the entrance of the tower where I found the room this gobbo was standing around rolling his eyes... literally.

No seriously, there's only me and Lor the farmer and maybe 10 metalsmith forges in this mountainhome and I don't think there's even a way out.

Just got home, downloaded .02 and genned my first world on my own computer.
It has an ocean called the 'ocean of strokes' and an elvish adventurer named Mame Sunsfreckles, who had his legs smashed up by a night creature many years ago, then went on to slay a badass* dragon. I want to track this guy down and team up for some monster slaying, buddy movie-style.

Well, depends on what you mean by "this", yeah, it pretty much was, just without the "silently" and the "part explodes in gore/is smashed into the body, an unrecognizable mass" parts.

Try throwing bodies too! Nothing better than "The spinning Dragon corpse strikes the Human Recruit in the lower body. The Dragon corpse has lodged firmly in the wound!" then, it gets better if "The Human Recruit pulls out the Dragon corpse."

It was a towering humanoid made of salt without especial abilities, so I shot it and removed one of his arms, but then he kicked me in the head and well... this happened:

Not only does it have the secrets of life and death, it's also made of solid adamantine. Talk about a generous god.

Also, the god who created it is probably Nurgle - his spheres include murder, death, disease, blight, duty, order, and discipline.

Did you mod your game? Adamantine is not supposed to be used by necros or demons.

When I first started playing DF I used texture packs. Over time and as I played other roguelikes that used ASCii I just grew used to it and eventually came to prefer it. Different strokes for different folks. I've seen lots of people use texture packs, so it's not like it's bad or anything.

Better siege, including digging when appropriate, is planned.
Quote from: DFTalk Combined Transcript (cmd+f 'siege tower'
Capntastic:   I've never really had problems with sieges it's always self-sabotage that causes problems really. I dunno, it's pretty fun just to have waves of guys running into your swords, but I'm looking forward to in the future them being a bit more clever, I guess? A little bit more planning involved.
Rainseeker:   Yeah, because, right now the way I defend against a siege is I ignore it, pretty much; [1b]I put up a bunch of traps and they all die, then they run away.
Toady:   Yeah, right now they're ridiculous. Just kind of a meat grinder simulator. Any time you've got people taking a core game mechanic and treating it like it's sort of an optional challenge - are you going to build traps or not, because then sieges matter, or they don't - that's something that needs to be fixed. It's always been the plan to fix that and there's a million different ways to do that that are all going to be coming up. After this big release we're going to work on making sieges better and a lot of the things you guys said are in the works, and more beside that. So there's the notion of nerfing traps because obviously they're a little overpowered right now, and how we'd do that ... probably just make more mechanisms necessary, more map tiles necessary, so you can't just make a trap, you'd actually have to create a trap from some more pieces. I don't know if there might be templates to make that an easier process but certainly just having a weapon trap existing in a square without having to put something in a wall or put something in a floor is kind of strange, and having a stone-fall trap exist in a square out in the middle of a room with no ceiling ... what does that even mean? Is it shooting up from the ground and then landing on top of them? It's kind of weird. So just changing that would be helpful, but then also having the siegers be able to learn from their mistakes ... like when they send people in they should have an idea - it's a little complicated thinking about how they analyse the map and so on, but you can take some steps in that direction - and then if they have a notion of sending a group of people into a certain direction and then all those people die, if they know why then they should be able to adapt their strategy. If they just get ground by traps then they'd either have some counter-measure for that kind of trap or they just wouldn't go that way again. Ultimately there should be counter-measures for every kind of terrain, every kind of trap, every kind of weapon, to the point where you should have to adapt. You shouldn't expect to be able to just win every siege with some kind of static defence that you haven't been changing at all. There [are] always going to be very clever things people do that we constantly have to adapt to, but as far as the basic defences that are provided by the game, it's not like any of those should be sure things; it's not like we want every siege to destroy you, but they should have a chance to be able to do something. And there's a list of other things, the siegers in general are very poorly skilled compared to your dwarves, and they don't have a notion of which direction they're attacking from, they don't use any siege engines, they don't know how to make little bridges, or pile up dirt against a wall, or bring a siege tower against a wall ... There's a lot of things that they could afford to learn, and there's also the use of large monsters and things that are in a fantasy world that provide benefit, such as things that fly or things that can dig, which I know is a contentious issue, whether or not they would be able to dig, which is kind of a crucial thing when you're considering attacking a mountain. If you don't have other options and you have a lot of time, then digging is a pretty good idea, [but] at the same time I know there's kind of this aesthetics issue, you don't want people to just be able to destroy your own fortress sometimes. What we're thinking is having it default 'on', and if you turn off digging siegers then you can't really expect to do that well; it's all a matter of what people want out of the game, some people don't care about sieges at all and would just as soon turn them off and just like making their fortress and so on. [In summary], we're planning to support that kind of stuff.
Rainseeker:   I think it that it'd be neat if you allowed us to restore walls - like they're caving in little segments of wall - so that once the siege is gone you could restore your fortress to its former beauty, you know for the people that are annoyed by the digging.
