Books and Library?
« on: November 05, 2016, 02:47:50 pm »

So, ive recently had my dwarves create a library in my fortress. To my understanding they were supposed to move any books directly into the bookcases there, i also put a sheet stockpile to see if it would make a difference, but nothing seems to be working. I recently just got a necromancers tome (by snatching it from his hands and beating him over the head with it), and im trying to get my dwarves to keep that thing safe. Am i doing something wrong or are my dwarves just too busy?

Could be it is still considered owned by a non-citizen, I've seen that with other books, scholars come with books and drop them when they leave but no one picks them up because they are still considered owned by someone else. Try looking in the expanded stock screen to see if it is listed in red.

When visiting vampires are eliminated they sometimes drop books, and these books still have a "merchant" tag which causes dorfs not to move them out of the way of whatever they're blocking. It's possible to clear that tag with DFHack, but it's also said this tag is automatically cleared after half a year or so. You probably have the same issue, as GhostDwemer said.

Patrik, how do you clear the tag with DFHack? I've got books that have been sitting around outside, untouchable, for five years. I can't even autodump them.

- Select the item with loo'k'
- Run gui/gm-editor from the DFHack console
- Go down into flags (8/2 to move up/down in the list, <ENTER> to go down into an element or change it (in the next step))
- Toggle the 'trader' flag to false
- escape out.

As long as there's a thread up for it, I'll ask my own question.

How many scrolls are supposed to be stored in each bookshelf or chest? I don't know if I'm massively overbuilding my library or not.

We're all secretly mantises. Except that one guy. We're trolling the shit out of him.

I don't know the answer, but it's a fair number; at least 20.

Scroll size is 200 (/10 as it is a Tool). That's really small - quire is half the size, granted, but it's about the size of a cut gem. A book is fifty times bigger, dwarfing even a mace or battleaxe.

Chest can contain up to 6000 volume (DF2014:Weight - Dwarf Fortress Wiki)
So a chest can contain up to 6000/20 = 300 scrolls.

A bookcase has 100000 /10 volume (Bookcase). So a bookcase can contain up to 500 scrolls. Or 1 mined boulder, if you will.
