Giant cave spider stories thread?

My first run-in with a giant cave spider actually saw me walking away unscathed. I was a marksdwarf, and I was tasked to infiltrate a cave to kill a minotaur. What they didn't tell me was that the place was crawling with giant cave spiders. I had read the wiki, and when I snuck up on two of them standing side-by-side, I got the hell out of there and tried a different path. Oh, it's a cave swallowman. I tried shooting him from cover, but both shots missed him, AND the giant mole behind him, and both ran through a GCS at the end of the corridor! Both shots pierced the brain and heart, and it quickly died. I was quite proud to have slain the beast, but my quarry was still alive. I decided to run up and beat him down with my crossbow, then strangle him to death.

Feeling emboldened by my kills, I decided to fight against the next GCS I encountered. I didn't expect it to suddenly run up on me and blow my cover, but I fired a bolt anyway. Glance. It shot a web at me, but it didn't hit. I ran behind the bend and started hiding again, and fired a few more shots. Same thing as last time! Brain and heart pierced, bled to death. Now feeling quite invincible, I continued my trek down the cave, when I found yet another CGS. You see, I had forgotten to go stealth, so it immediately shot a web at me. I didn't think much of it. That is, until my screen suddenly filled up with purple messages. My third encounter with a GCS finally did me in, but I still felt pretty good about killing those other two.

Alright, I have one.  This just happened a few minutes ago.  I rolled an adventurer in the southwest corner of a standard world, and began trekking to my fortress, probably two weeks travel away.  When I got there, it was crawling with rat/antmen, and littered with goblin and dwarf bones.  I cleared out the monsters, grabbed a steel shortsword and shield dropped by a caravan guard who perished in the archer-squad ambush that did the fortress in, and then proceeded to enter the fortress.  I went through the underbridge(A tunnel I made going under a river) to reach the stockpiles, loaded up on platinum nuggets and gems until I could barely move, and headed back to check out the rest of the fortress.  Combat messages start coming in.  I kind of halfheartedly skim through them, expecting the typical chasm creature vs. Wildlife spam, only to see that a Giant Cave Spider was tearing the head off of a local goat.  Commence Danger Mode.  I drop all of the loot I was carrying to increase my speed, and carefully head into the main fortress.

You are in stairwell.
It is pitch black.  You are likely to be eaten by a Giant Cave Spider.
Obvious exits are NORTH, EAST, WEST, and SOUTH.

I chose east, heading into the dining room.  To my horror, it's completely filled with giant cave spider webs.  I go into full shelob mode, struggling through the webs to get into the kitchen, and hopefully away from the spider.  I could almost hear the nails-on-chalkboard music that plays whenever someone's in a deadly situation that's also gross.  You know that music?  Yeah, just like that.  I get ready to hurl the steel battleaxe I found if I see the spider.  Suddenly it bursts in through the entrance, right where I had been before.  Before I have a chance to throw the axe, it's on me.  It bowls me over like some kind of meathead football geek, and starts eviscerating me.  I have just enough fight left in me to break one of its legs, but the sword gets stuck, and seconds later my arm gets broken.  I pass out from pain, and the spider eats me.

Also, I've been wondering, what ever happened to Giant Cave Spiders?  That was the first one I've seen in this version.  Did Toady make them rarer or something?

Erm, don't GCS's have NONAUSEA? They don't vomit, I thought.

Epic story, Cthulhu!

And talking about rare... I've never encountered a single Giant Cave Spider, ever...
... yet strangely they are already my favourite enemy, and I long for the day I finally get to meet one.

I hope it will introduce itself in a similiar way as it did with you.

... Though I might just faint.

Take the corpse and use it as a weapon. All your kills will get a +42 Ironblood bonus.

I had one character who got a quest, recruited a minion, splattered a couple antment, and then ran head on into a GCS.  His first real fight.

Brawler, just to be clear, is simply an alternative profession for drunks.  I generally don't bring any alcohol on adventures, after all.

code:
The giant cave spider misses The Brawler!
The Brawler punches The giant cave spider in the abdomen with her right hand!
The shot glances away.
The giant cave spider shoots out thick strands of webbing!
The Brawler is caught up in the web!
The Brawler falls over.
The Brawler is caught up in the web!
The giant cave spider bites The Brawler in the left lower arm!
It is torn!
The Brawler looks numb!
The giant cave spider latches on firmly!
You've been spotted!
You are caught up in the web!
You fall over.
The Brawler is feeling sluggish!
The giant cave spider shakes The Brawler around by the left lower arm!
A chunk is torn away!
You are partially free of the web.
The giant cave spider strikes at You but the shot is blocked!
You are completely free of the web.
The giant cave spider strikes at You but the shot is blocked!
The Brawler is partially paralyzed!
The giant cave spider strikes at You but the shot is blocked!
The giant cave spider bites You in the upper body!
It is torn!
You feel numb!
The giant cave spider latches on firmly!
You hack at The giant cave spider in the abdomen with your Iron great axe!
It is broken!
The giant cave spider's entrails shoot out through the wound!
The giant cave spider is propelled away by the force of the blow!
You are feeling sluggish!
The Brawler is partially free of the web.
The Brawler is completely free of the web.
The giant cave spider spits out the human Chunk.
The Brawler is completely paralyzed!
You are partially paralyzed!
The giant cave spider vomits.
You begin sneaking.
You stand up.
The giant cave spider vomits.
You are completely paralyzed!
You fall over.
The giant cave spider vomits.
The giant cave spider vomits.

It is mangled!

You have partially overcome the paralysis.
You have fully overcome the paralysis.
You stand up.

One blow!  And we both survived, though there wasn't much less of my decoy - er, honored and valiant ally.

I make a hammerdwarf in the Martial Arts mod, and recruit a drunk. I then get a mission to go to a cave and kill a giant.

So my drunken buddy loses an eye to a naked mole dog, but survives. When we return to the site, he falls over in pain. Screw that, then, he can catch up. I reenter the cave and kill a giant rat with ease.

And then... disaster. I don't notice that big S breaking off like a shadow from one wall as I explore a side passage. it sneaks up behind me, and strikes! It's teeth sink into my left foot, crippling me, but somehow I don't get poisoned yet. It tries again while I'm on the ground, and somehow I manage to counterstrike.

My dwarf brings his steel warhammer crashing straight down on the thing's head, shattering the chitin there and ruining three of the thing's eyes, and one of it's mandibles. It's knocked back from the force of the blow. Good, that should buy me some time - it was incredibly lucky though.

He struggles to free himself from a web I inadverdently made him walk into, when a giant rat comes out of nowhere and starts trying to bite him. Crap, and the GCS is coming back.

Well, I have no freaking idea what my dwarf pulled off, but I'm guessing he somehow performed a whirlwind attack with a broken foot. First he counters a strike by the rat and smashes the thing's lower body into the upper body. THEN he lashes out at the GCS, and breaks one of it's legs. It tries to bite him, and he counterstrikes _again_, smashing the thing's fangs. Great! It can't poison me anymore.

The next strike bashes the thing's head into it's body. It flies away five tiles.

My hammerdwarf just killed a GCS in three/four hits with a broken foot, alone.

I must find a suitable place to retire this guy.

Meh, mods.  They ruin the fun for me.  I think I'm going to try to increase GCS numbers to back when they ran rampant.

Just FYI, the mod had nothing to do with this. The MA mod adds new weapons and playable races,as well as souped up natural attacks with descriptive text, but I was playing a dwarf hammerer. There is no "whirlwind attack", he just attacked the rat then counterstriked the spider, but I called it a whirlwind attack with a broken foot for flavor. ^_^
