DF graphics pack for HDTV (work in early progress)
« on: June 18, 2011, 03:50:35 pm »

I've recently set up a mega media center PC on my living room HDTV, and had the thought to do a giant-tilesize DF graphics pack so I can play from my couch.

I'm not sure it'll ever get to any kind of finish line (so many tiles to update), but I really like what I came up with so far and figured I'd share.  I started by uprezzing Tocky's dwarves (my very favorite out there, used in Mayday's pack), and let my creativity run loose from there.

I'm most happy with the Glazer, the zombie, the ghost, and the King.

These look awesome! I think my favorite is the zombie right now, actually.

I was under the impression, however, that on a 1920x1080 resolution (I think that's right for HDTVs, yes?) there's a minimum 80 tile width for DF - which leaves you with a maximum of 24px length per tile. This is of course if you want to see the whole screen at once. Is there a way to get around that?

Yeah, you need 80 horizontal tiles.  Hope you have one of these: http://gizmodo.com/5375522/want-a-4k-tv-sony-has-a-76000-set-with-your-name-on-it

I should be clear; these aren't the tiles.  This is a raster output of the vector master file just for showing-off purposes - it's all designed in Illustrator as vector art and can be resized to any resolution.

I'd planned on them being 24ish - raster scaling them to that size and then doing hand pixel-tuning.  It's just much easier to do batch work in vector when you're dealing with mix-and-match pieces.

So, this would be the butcher at 24x24.  I won't lie - I'd love to get them a bit bigger, but you're right that the minimums are working against me.

Very cool! I dig the glazer and dyer.
I think it could be spiced up by having an alternate beard (groomed swirls) for more variety, and alternate arms position.
