Does anyone have much experience with catapults?

The wiki makes them sound very weak and not worth the effort.

Does anyone have experience that proves otherwise? How effective have they been for you?

They're for getting rid of rocks.

And if they actually were to hit anything, my understanding is they're about as good as stone traps. Which is to say pathetic.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I think of them as a training device and stone stockpiling tool.

Unused corridor with the end channeled out to dump them right by the mason's.  Dwarf loads, fires, and the stone drops right by the mason's.

They only hit things on the z-level they are on.

Yep. Rock hits wall at the end of the corridor, and then falls straight down through the hole in the floor to right in front of the mason's workshop below.

They appear to be good for training up siege operator skill before switching the dwarf to ballistas. Ballistas seem to be better than catapults, but still pretty limited.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.
