I just want to state that whenever someone uses the word Weaboo, I imagine they look like this:

I'm sure I'm not the only one.  Its got to be the top of my list of "stupid words the internet invented".

The person using the word or the person the word is used to describe?
Also, do we know where the word came from?

IIRC some people have taken the term on as a badge of pride (like what happens with a lot of derogatory terms, like nerd, geek, etc).

But we already have other ways of doing that ♪

The musical note is way harder to use and remember then the tilde.

Which I guess someone already said, but less bluntly.

Nobody knows the keycode for that, whereas tilde is on your keyboard to begin with.

The euphemism treadmill is a strange and fickle beast. Derogatory terms become acceptable, acceptable terms become derogatory, and some just vanish altogether.

Also, since we're so close to it, what the hell is hypertilde (It's this:`) used for?
That's a grave accent, never heard it called a hypertilde before and I don't think it's used in Japanese. Maybe you're thinking dakuten ゙ ? That's used to show a consonant is voiced.

It's the grave accent, and not an apostrophe, as some might claim.

Haha, tell me about it. 'Tis why I hate the concept of euphemisms and dysphemisms even though I know they're never going away. At least they provide some gosh darn frickin' amusement.

Also, do we know where the word came from?
Yes, yes we do!

It was originally used in the webcomic Perry Bible Fellowship:
Spoiler: Large Image (click to show/hide)
Wherein it was just a "word that must never be spoken".

Weeaboo didn't inherit its current use, until Moot, the guy who runs 4chan, set "wapanese" (wanna-be Japanese) to censor to "weeaboo", presumably tired of seeing the insult used. (See also: Jew censoring to Newt Gingrich)

From there it was pretty much inevitable that "weeaboo" would be used as a derogatory in the same meaning as "wapanese". Since it's been going on for a while, we now see the loss of the term's harshness and some people self-identifying as such, although it's still mainly used as a derogatory term.

And that was 30 Seconds of Your Life You Can't Get Back with Sensei!
