[Daniel the Finlander]

The booming sound of goblin horns echoed on the surface. A vile force of darkness arrived from the south. The Sin of Weaknesses is determined to destroy us.

Let them try. I am not afraid.



Fifty-one invaders. Poorly equipped and trained. They should be easily-



Oh.

A loud roar could be heard even beneath the surface. It came from the leader of the host, a fearsome black troll known as Rethal Aneddal. He wielded a sword like it was a dagger.



He led his warband across the brook and towards the fortress. Our soldiers were rallied. I realized we had no crossbowdwarves, so I ordered the rangers to grab crossbows. They were reluctant before I persuaded them to obey.



The new group called themselves "The Tips of Bolting". A fitting name. I think I will make them permanent, meaning that I must order an archery range to be built.



The trolls entered the ducal hall and started to destroy the furniture. I think that the hall will be beyond repair soon.



A poor dwarf didn't get inside in time before the bridge was raised. She is married to one of our swordsdwarves. He demanded the bridge to be lowered, even if the enemy might then get inside the fortress.

I knew his pain and fear, so I complied. The soldier thanked me a dozen times before he left the fortress.

His wife ran inside, a baby in her clutch.



He was the first one to attack the goblins.



The Ducal Guard fought fiercely in the rain and slew many. Arrows bounced off their metal armour and got stuck in their shields. Without a word they swung their weapons and felled many opponents with ease.



The Captain of the Guard fell into the treacherous pond that had claimed the life of another skillful soldier before. That puddle has slain more dwarves than most goblins. It must be drained, so we can recover the masterwork gear of war as well as the bodies of the fallen.



Some trolls routed after witnessing the cold slaughter of their foul masters. Let them run.



It's not like they can get away.



The battle ended in the ducal hall like the previous one had. The black troll was the last one standing and fell like the others had.



After the battle, Zon the Champion was granted a title.



Cog the Axedwarf named his bloodied axe "Adsat", Sunnystroked. I found this strange, for why would anyone name their weapon? But then again, the man has lost four children. Maybe this axe is like a baby to him.

I still find it strange.



The duchess asked me if she could move to live in the Monument. Asked me, because both of us know who is the one in power here. I said that it would be fine and that living quarters would be arranged within our greatest achievement. I must say, it is a fitting dwelling place for a duchess.



Daeron talked to me and seemed to be less depressed. He asked me when I was going to let her little sister go. I said that there are still a few things I'll need him to do for me. Then, I'd let his last relative alive in this fortress go.

If he disobeys me, the gods will receive a gift.



The cook finally received her official beating. I did my best to hide my smile as they carried her cold corpse inside.



The Empress of the Empires of Joking arrived. She was escorted by two bodyguards. Soon afterwards a caravan arrived. I welcomed the humans with open arms.

The duchess told me that the Empress had asked her to attack the elven traders next time they come here. The human ruler wanted the dwarves to join them in their war against the pointy-eared tree-huggers. I nodded. It will be done.

Once again, the traders didn't have anything we particularly desired.



There were rumours that a new Overseer would replace me this year.

I have proven them false. Daeron's "persuasion" is most useful to me.



More migrants arrived. 8 adults and 3 children.



One of them claimed to be a great hunter, a slayer of many beasts. I am not certain if her claims are true, but she was quite persuasive. She can join the military and teach the recruits a few tricks.



I've been seeing strange dreams recently. Dreams of myself looking into a mirror, but instead of my reflection I saw Workclench that wasn't devastated, where everydwarf was happy, where I still had my wife, where we even had children...

Maybe I shouldn't sleep so deep underground, close to the maddening Underworld.

I could really use a drink.

While I drank, I met the hammerer. I asked if she had been having similar dreams in that bedroom. She told me about visions she had had, of a parallel world where some things are the same while others different.

Interesting.



The cheese maker isn't very fond of her job, but she's doing it. If she complains about it again, Daeron will teach her a lesson.



The soldiers complained that a ghost had tried to spar with them. "It is terrifying," they said. I ordered a memorial to be engraved and soon the spirit was put to rest.



A yet another child created a yet another artifact. It is absolutely gorgeous.

I should create a vault for all the treasures of Workclench.



It has been done.



An archery range was built, and the marksdwarves started honing their skills.



More misbehaviour. They never learn, do they?



Much better.

The gate of the hut on the surface was destroyed by Kogan the speardwarf. He has misbehaved before. Now he must be punished with extreme prejudice.



Excellent. The Champion delivered a fitting punishment with his iron fists.



A miner joked that the fatter the leader, the more tyrannical he is.

Daeron made her regret making that joke...

Wasn't that bonecrafter...



Oh.

Have I already gone too far?

What? The blacksmiths didn't make those axes I mandated them to create?

In Armok's name, these lazy, feisty fools deserve all this suffering! And more! I've had enough!



Every child under the age of ten will be sacrificed!

That should teach them to respect me!

"The fatter the leader"... I will not tolerate such disrespectful behaviour!



Burn! If I can't have children, then no one can!

Who was the bone crafter? And I guess you'll be pairing down shared inhabitants further. What's the vanilla name of the tyrant btw? It's hard to keep track of this stuff.

@Tournesol: Sure, there's still a few children under the age of ten running around. And I'm not planning to kill all the younger kids, I'll spare the artifact creators and Daeron's sister. I'll check if one of the rascals is eight years old.

@De: The bone crafter was Zan the swordsdwarf's wife. I haven't changed the name of the tyrant, my 'avatar' is Daeron. His real name is Alath Tosidfikod, and he arrived at the fortress in the year 127. I haven't named any other dwarves besides Misty.

So, multiple waves of goblin/troll soldiers incoming and a discussed war with elves as well, combined with general civilian unhappiness, dealing with the effects of prior flooding, nobles giving mandates, and large children to adult ratio. It could get worse. It could get a lot worse, and as long as that is true this fort still has a chance. The big question is how much adamantine have we mined?!? I have dealt with a bit, but I have generally stayed away from that. On another note, is training with adamantine arrows allowed?
