What if we get him to go after the first thing that comes to his mind?

Try to get back to the room with the machine in, if that doesn’t work.

"Okay."

...  Trence closes his eyes, and a moment later, hops out of the village towards the outskirts.  You follow.

This isn't a smooth transition to another location like usual, but passing through the trees at the edge of the village is more like opening a door and stepping through a threshhold.. there's a moment of no forward progress, and then you're in the middle of a big field dotted with hawthorn trees.  And there's a very young villager there, holding a live fox.

Trence stops and looks at the girl.  "This isn't my sister."

Ask him if his sister is who he wanted to find, then I guess we find out who this girl is.

"Yeah, I..."

The (once again human) Trence sits down and chokes up.
Sessha and Willis move to comfort him.

Alice questions the villager.  No, she doesn't know who Trence is.  Yes, she's from here.  Her name is Anna.  There's a few more akward questions, but Alice lets her leave after a moment.

"Lets get out of here."

A door appears in the field, just behind Trence.

You're outside the dome again.  Trence doesn't want to go in there again.  You're probably done for the day, really.

That all?  Or is there anything you want to do before calling it a day?

I think that's it for now.

We know... some stuff about the bubble, but I'm shocked that it's better at keeping us out than the goddamn fish was. Ignoring the illusion and heading "deeper in" seemed like the best solution, but that's a fairly low bar. We still don't know if that puzzle was actually what we were looking for or just a better runaround or what.

+1 We should probably brink uncle with us next time and see what he makes of it.

Risky, but maybe so.

...especially if Trence doesn't want to come.

Do you want to do one more dive with Uncle instead of Trence?

I think so.

We can't just abandon the puzzle! Or confounding image of a puzzle. Um. Only one way to find out?

What if the thing down there isn't even a thing we can actually grab and drag back with us? What if it's just like, the cave itself is spooky?

Uncle accepts your invitation almost disturbingly fast, after finding out that it's safe down there.  Except for some puzzle.  He does not have any immediate ideas.

Quote
What if the thing down there isn't even a thing we can actually grab and drag back with us? What if it's just like, the cave itself is spooky?

"..It could be an area, yes.  But this dark sun stuff is fairly compact.  Whatever it is, item or area, it's not that large.  I can't say an exact size, but I don't think it's bigger than, say, ten feet by ten feet.  And it could be as small as a coin or a button."

Once he suits up, the four drop down again.  Uncle insists on going over the built-up area first, digging around and pacing out the distance.  You're not sure why, but he'll probably fill you in when you're back above water again.

Then it's time to enter the dome.

This time, when you enter, you're in a magic tent, not walking in an open area.  There's a base camp here, with an inventory chest, a toolbox, and a couple storage crates along with a number of hammocks.  Outside is a cooking setup and several more tents.. in the jungle.  Visible are a number of old stone blocks on the floor, as well as trails, one clearly leading to some ancient temple.

"I remember you telling me about that snake temple, Willis.  I've never really explored that part of the world.  Does this look like that kind of plance?"

Willis nods.

Ignoring the illusion and heading "deeper in" seemed like the best solution, but that's a fairly low bar. We still don't know if that puzzle was actually what we were looking for or just a better runaround or what.

We could feed Uncle a false description of the control panel and then send him in alone to find it, and test if it's the same as his false expectations or if he sees the same controls.  And direct him to pull the rightmost lever, and then the next two levers in sequence, stating that the third one will kick him out.  If it's altered to match the false description and behavior, the control panel is entirely false, and the original was likely false too.  If it's altered in appearance but still kicks him out when he fiddles with the first control (as it did to us), it's a real thing which the illusion can mess with our perception of.  If it's altered in appearance, and never kicks him out in the same way even when expected to, the control panel is real and he found an illusory copy.  And finally if he finds the same exact thing, with our misinformation corrected, it's definitely real.

If it's real I imagine the solution is to fiddle with it.  But I suspect it's not, there wasn't much detail given to it.  We can't think about it and describe a detailed solution right now, and normally for puzzles Dev describes the necessary bits to interact with.  So if it is a puzzle, the solution's prolly rather simple.

I'd want to bring the thaumulator down and track down the exact position of the artifact.  If the thaumulator can be brought down here.

If the fish and this thing were designed to confound us in particular, then maybe the fish was put there just so that we couldn't bring uncle down and he'll be able to figure something out.

We brought the thaumulator already:
"What the..." says Sessha, looking at the bustling city around the three.  "This is Mosral City!  Must be some kinda weird illusion thing."  "And the Thamulator ain't working, the eye's just spinning around now."
Either the illusion is messing with it or the whole bubble is more or less uniform signal.

Enter illusion, head for "the center" of the bubble near as we can tell.
