Fight 2N: Priest Ndrog the Human vs Slappybara the Capybara Man
Gamelog: https://pastebin.com/vFB9VsHL

Another fight, another capybara man. Slappybara (managed by diatere) returns from a round one fight that can only be described as comic relief. Still wearing his forced grimace, he appears in the arena with his muscles exposed by a new fur cut with shaved arms. Flexing his physique, he growls in a macho display. It’s adorable! The crowd goes wild with adoration! The same child from round one exclaims to her mother “he’s got the same haircut as Mr. Poodles!”. Slappybara notices a peddler selling stuffed capybara dolls with a lizard man attached firmly to their hand. He quickly dons a new steel helm he got from the armory between rounds, to hide his blushing cheeks.

This time, however, his opponent doesn’t share in the shenanigans. Priest Ndrog (managed by Quantum Drop) stands on the other end of the ring, just as he did in round one with his arms reaching out and grasping his halberd that’s firmly struck into the ground. He mutters a prayer just as before, just a stoic, like a timeless relic in the flesh. Between rounds he spent all of his time in training, silently drilling with his halberd with uncanny focus. After dispatching another man of the cloth in round one, it’s doubtful that he will have any mercy for a boastful brawler today.

Priest Ndrog is still mumbling his prayer when the bell rings, but Slappybara doesn’t wait a moment to run in and close the gap! He’s just a few steps away when Priest Ndrog lifts his head and beams a disappointed and spiteful gaze at the inconsiderate Slappybara. A few steps away is ideal halberd range, and Priest Ndrog swiftly tears the halberd from the ground in an upward stroke, a clear attack that barely misses Slappybara! Slappy’s no chicken, he’s a big mean guy who does bad things to other mean guys, you know. To prove it, he punches the dour priest right under the ribs, a nasty shot to the liver! Surely that will get Priest Ndrog to drop his weapon!

But the jab is met with a stone faced scowl and Priest Ndrog immediately brings his halberd into a golf swing and it slices deep into Slappybara’s abdomen! Slappy winces and yelps but he intends to stay in the fight and returns with another jab. They exchange some strikes but miss every one, before they jump back from each other to gain some distance. Neither was expecting this from their opponent. Slappybara assesses the situation, but it’s a foolish mistake! Now in perfect range for another halberd swing, Priest Ndrog swings the long weapon in a low swoop, carving a deep flesh wound into Slappybara’s left foot, then carries it around in a full circle overhead to deliver a plunging slash to Slappybara’s left arm, cleaving it from his body at the shoulder!

Slappybara is missing an entire arm, not a good situation for such a brawler! He’s forced onto the defensive as Priest Ndrog continues to plot out swing after swing of his halberd, his gaze never breaking from the capybara man’s face. Slappybara beings jumping away from every attack he can, and returning blows of his own, but being on the defensive against a halberd makes fisticuffs a difficult game; not to mention missing one of his two weapons! Priest Ndrog’s assault is calm and he takes care to keep Slappybara at a range as he hacks and slashes into him. And he certainly does, repeatedly. First a stab to the liver, then a slash to the right leg, and Slappybara falls over!

Any attempts to return strikes to Priest Ndrog are futile and few at this point. Slappy is pinned and Priest Ndrog carves him up with ease. A plunging strike to his ribs, shattering the true ribs and slicing into the lung! Slappybara hacks and spits up mouthfuls of blood. A stab into the other side of his ribcage, piercing between them and into the other lung! Slappybara begins visibly suffocating, unable to participate in the fight at all now. Priest Ndrog rips the halberd free from the rib cage and takes his time reeling back a more powerful second stab. He assumes the prayer position from before the bell and slams his halberd down into Slappybara’s abdomen, nearly cutting him in two! He mutters the final words of his interrupted prayer and speaks to the corpse “Your life was rightfully fleeting, capybara man.”

Congratulations, Priest Ndrog! Your devotion to your craft is as impressive as it is frightening!

Fight 2O: The Silent Slicer, a Jumping Spider Woman vs the Beast of Spearimpale, a Minotaur
Gamelog: https://pastebin.com/4JikQ7VA

In round one we saw ‘The Silent Slicer’ (managed by ShockinglyTallDwarf) trim Beardbeard’s beard for good with her two copper swords. But she appears in the arena today with two MORE swords, and these forged of steel! Looks like she’s been doing some shopping between rounds at the armory. And to think she still has two free hands, this little terror of a spider woman might have just become a whole lot more deadly! She dances the swords between her hands, as though braiding the air.

Well, “terror” is a word perhaps best saved for her opponent, The ‘Beast of Spearimpale’ (managed by memmet). This ominous minotaur has a presence that seems to chill the air and weigh on the spirit. Nobody saw the Beast in either the training grounds or the armory. It’s a mystery where this monster comes and goes. As it stands tall across from ‘The Silent Slicer’ it seems loosened up, warmed up, as though it was still waking from a long rest during that first fight.

The ‘Silent Slicer’ is poised and ready to fight, barely holding back for the bell. The Beast stands like a statue, not reacting at all to the spider woman. Then the bell rings! The ‘Silent Slicer’ darts forward with an impressive long jump, immediately closing the gap and preventing the Beast of Spearimpale from charging! The Beast doesn’t seem caught off guard, though, and attempts to gore the spider woman as she lands. A miss! The ‘Silent Slicer’ strikes back but the beast jumps away, proving that the jumping spider isn’t the only creature with hops. They trade a few blows, all blocked, before the Beast decides to get serious and charges the Silent Slicer. It connects! The Silent Slicer is tossed backwards!

Not one to be bested by some unexpected air time, the Silent Slicer lands upright and immediately jumps back into the fight! The two exchange some attacks, dodging and blocking until the Silent Slicer lands a gruesome slash on the Beast’s right arm! The Beast lashes back but misses twice, and the Silent Slicer begins her signature non-stop offense. She lands another attack on the same arm, this time stabbing to the bone! Hopping around to different flanks of the Beast as she mechanically operates her four swords, the Beast can’t seem to connect an attack of its own. It lets out a strange, unnatural roar reminiscent of the howls that emanate from strange, distant towers!

Another sword slashes into the flesh of the Beast’s upper leg! And another to its head! It cuts deep into the flesh, but doesn’t make it through bone. It deflects the Beast’s head, and it appears that the Beast simply cannot work any attacks in through the constant burden of the Silent Slicer’s blows. It’s clear now why Beardbeard couldn’t have won; if a minotaur can’t manage to make a useful opening then who could? Well, it turns out a minotaur can indeed! A second, louder howl bursts from the Beast, one that seems to mute every other sound of the world. Then, without so much as reeling back to hint at its next move, the Beast throws its fist through the face of the Silent Slicer! That’s no exaggeration, the fist doesn’t meet the slightest bit of resistance as it’s propelled clean through the spider woman’s head, exploding it into a cloud of ichor and chitin! The spider woman’s remaining body falls to its knees, its six arms falling to its side as this machine of death powers down.

Congratulations, Beast of Spearimpale! May Armok help us all.

Fight 2P: Madame Spots the Jaguar Woman vs Zeps the Rat Man
Gamelog: https://pastebin.com/3Y1F1EPk

Madame Spots (managed by chipathingy) seemed aloof about the tournament in round one. Convinced to join by her husband, she didn’t think much of the event but of course she is a proud hunter and wasn’t going to disappoint. After making such quick work of the troll, Massive Mike, today she seems much more excited to see how well she can do. She’s even spent some time in the armory picking out an iron mail shirt to protect under her usual leather, and some gauntlets as well! She spent a fair amount of time practicing her thrusts and parries in the training grounds as well, but had a hard time joking around with the other fighters. Apparently everybody is pretty uptight around here.

Speaking of uptight, she’s fighting with the most uppity and tightest of gladiators this year: Zeps (managed by Eris235). Zeps is a rat man and a cruel packmaster, and he showed his colors last round as an absolute disbeliever in chivalry. After mutilating a beautiful elven spearwoman, should we expect another cruel display of dominance and disrespect from this evil hearted rat man? Perhaps. He spent some time between rounds practicing his lashing while yelling commands at the wooden dummy as though it disobeyed trade mandates or something!

Madame Spots seems keenly aware of how cruel Zeps is. Perhaps she spectated the fight of a fellow spearwoman. Zeps seems thirsty for an opportunity to assert authority over another victim. The bell rings, and the two rush toward one another, eager to put the other in their place! Zeps strikes first but it’s a miss; Madame Spots strikes back but Zeps jumps out of the way. The two exchange many strikes until Zeps lands a punch on Madame Spot’s paw and then a lash on the same paw, causing spurts of blood and Madame Spots to lose full control of the foot! Madame Spots falls over!

Down but not out, the fight continues with Zeps dominating the fight as he lashes the fallen Madame Spots! first in the lower leg, tearing into muscle, then he kicks her in the torso, then lashes her again in the right leg. She loses full control of that whole leg, dooming her to fight this fight on the ground. But she’s not helpless, as she manages to dodge most of Zeps attacks regardless. Unfortunately she isn’t able to land any of her own, making this fight one sided, even if she can delay the inevitable. Surprisingly, she’s heard at one point shouting “I think I’m getting the hang of this! This is fun!”. She really is aloof! Even in the face of death, being shredded up like a block of yak cheese, she’s happy for the chance to learn a thing or two?

Madame Spots endures more and more lashing, never able to connect her spear with the evil Zeps. Perhaps the long shaft of the weapon is the downfall of two of Zeps’ opponents now, as it’s too cumbersome to properly use from the ground. Her defiance of the seriousness of the situation may have sparked hope that she has some ace up her sleeve, but alas she gives up the fight apparently unable to cope with the pain. Zeps howls insults and commands at the poor leopard woman, and savagely lashes at her head. Her helm protects her from the spikes, but the weight of the iron scourge twists her neck violents and an audible *crack* is heard! Her limbs go still, as she hacks and retches and the rat man begins lashing away at her helm over and over.

Eventually Zeps becomes bored of this punishment and opts to remove the helm from the paralyzed Madama Spots, and lashes her no less than five times in the head until her breathing stops and she lays on the arena floor, an unrecognizable mass. “You’re dead already, what a shame. I’m afraid I might win this tournament before I’ve had my fill!”

Congratulations, Zeps. Your reign of terror continues for another fight.

Betting results can be found in the spreadsheet on the betting page. PaperPlinkPlonk was the richest Urist this round, walking away with 257 gold! The three most on gladiators were Beast of Spearimpale, Priest Ndrog, and Ine.

Round 3 betting opens now, and will be open until the 28th of July, 20 GMT. Feel free to participate even if you did not last round. Rules are here:

  • Betting is open both to the managers and the spectators of the tournament.
  • Every bettor starts out with 100 gold to be spent on the betting. You can't at any given moment put any more gold into a bet than you already have.
  • Every bettor can only put money on one gladiator per round.
  • Bets made after the official deadline for each round are not counted.
  • The system works in a way that allows those who bet on the underdogs (those who have less bet on them) to receive more gold than those who bet on the favorites, so go wild with your predictions!

Round 3 Upgrades
« Reply #332 on: July 23, 2023, 06:07:51 am »

All managers who were victorious in Round 2 will see their available amount of upgrade points to the far right of their gladiator in the spreadsheet.

Note about the algorithm: if you look at the numbers a bit closer, you can see that whenever the simple multiplication by 1.5 created a number that had something other than .5 in its decimal part, we rounded it up to the closest .5; so, .25 becomes .5 and .75 becomes 1. This was done to avoid infinite splintering of the points.

The Arena Personnel asks you to provide your upgrades as soon as possible. The deadline is the 28th of July, 12 GMT. We ask for your understanding on these matters; we need time to run and process the fights.

Please remember that your upgrades should be sent to dfgtcommittee@gmail.com. The upgrades will later be revealed via a separate post.

Good luck and go with Armok!

*Ine salutes his glorious opponent, blood dripping down him, and bruised and battered from slamming into the wall and floor.
"Glory to you, but greatest Glory to the Herd!"
He passes out, and a team of gremlin attendants swarm around his and usher him out of the arena.*

Quote
Nijinsky (managed by Salmeuk) and Evil Death Roll (managed by kosmossen) have their masked and horn helmed heads together in the arena, and appear to be…chatting? Yes folks, in the middle of the arena, the two musical gladiators who are scheduled to fight one another to the death for your enjoyment, are…chatting. The Bard Nijinsky appears to be admiring Evil Death Roll’s axe-guitar hybrid, while the Reptile Man seems happy to explain the instrument to someone who can actually appreciate the artistry behind it, instead of seeing it as something to be sold off to some crazed fan with more money than sense when he’s done using it. Oop, but here come their managers from their respective gates. Looks like there’s some fierce words going on down there.

Guards! Yes, Urist McSecurity, you get down there with your boys and sort things out please.

this had me laughing quite a bit. . wonderful write ups, as always. capturing the most dramatic moments and editorializing the rng into distinct narratives. awesome.  Cupuaçu's comeback from the brink of death was EPIC

Having profited 7 coins from the sure bet that was Ndrog, Nijinsky's manager would like to place his remaining 27 gold on Queen Regina Formicarium, whose fighting style is most agile and effective, and is greatly admired by the bloodied dancer.

edit: any contestants or managers that spend a large amount of time in the local bars (aka the drinkers and carousers) will notice Nijinsky has been unusually performative, dancing for long hours and practicing these unusual dance maneuvers that blur the line between artistry and martial prowess. you might even call them "martial arts"

My fight with Cupuacu is illegitimate, the admins gave my gladiator the wrong equipment, hence they didn't play my gladiator but something similar. An email has been sent a few days ago.
