I like to play 33x33 adventure games without civilizations. This gets rid of ALOT of lag, but then again you have to run around naked and with no weapon

Yeah it is pretty much, but I usualy play as monsters(witch I make intelegent) to make up for it.
Anyway its very calming I would recommend it.

What's more calming then walking around as a monster in a savage only world, tearing apart weaker animals?

in it there should be this tag

[PARTIAL_PRINT:NO:2]

Change it to

[PARTIAL_PRINT:YES:2]

I guess it was already off becuase some systems cant use it.

I have found that the largest amount of lag while walking about is caused by the site direction markers.  As you walk it occasionally refigures the direction and distance, and that can take some time.

I doubt that something as simple as direction markers will use any CPU power. As someone said already, the serious lag, which doesn't come every frame, happens when you enter another 'map sector' and the game load nearby sectors or whatever. Direction markers are updated at the same time, but they are not the source of the lag.

Sorry, I couldnt help myself.

You'd need about an 8GHz single core to run DF properly.

Uh, DF runs very well on a mediocre comp even if you play with reasonable settings....well obviously it won't if you embark on a 10x10 area which has a river/chasm/magma pool/dark tower with 700 goblins+temparature:on etc..  :P

On a brand new computer with one of the newer chips the game runs exceptionally well and even with large areas, my friend can run a fort the size of the whole local map and still get 100-200 fps even with alot of dwarves, fun fun fun i never sleep when im over their hahahahaha.
