Core ideas for new forts from HoMM5.
« on: July 08, 2010, 12:13:49 pm »

Hi

Andreus put a note on my HoMM5 inspired fortress 'Broadstrap' (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59656.0) suggesting that the devil fortress would make a nice fortress too.
I played another round of Heroes this weekend and found that many of the fortresses would indeed make good transfers to DF, so here are some shared ideas and links:

Dwarf:

Is as made for DF and is the core concept for my Broadstrap.  :D

Devil:

Would actually make an even better fortress with a broad free standing pillar above the lava sea.

Dark Elves:

Subterran by nature, but it may be difficult to find a cavern tall enough. There are pleanty of opportunity for Fun with falling during construction.

Undead:

Not that good a fortress, but building the very high thin spires (and perhaps even finding something to use them for) would be a good challenge.
Such fortress should be placed in the most evil possible biome.

Knights:

Probably quite boring to build.  ??? At least I can't find an interesting angle for it.

Elves:

The challenge here should probably be to build the giant tree of wood in the middle of a lake. Who wants to have more carpenters than mansons?

Mages:

I like this fortress so much that I will probably be my next project if when Broadstrap falls. (It will require that The Great One doesn't change the very liberal cave in rules.  ;) )

Feel free to comment on how these ideas could be realised.  :)

Thank you! I've been looking for this kind of inspiration! I especially liked the Dwarf one.

Good luck with your project, it's neat.

I dug a circle about 12 z levels and am building a fort in it, that I will submerge in water. It's not nearly as large as your project though.

HoMM5 certainly does pretty things. I love their art style.

Even the title screen with the fight between the paladin and demon is awesome.  :D
