Arena battles.
Arena battles are great fun when they are operated correctly. Such threads as the Arena Test are places that are brimming with suspense and entertainment.
Unfortunately, they have all died.
So, I have decided to start my own Arena thread. Instead of the traditional one character submissions, though, each player in the arena will create a team. Below is the process to create a team. Keep in mind that I will be using the most current version, with slight alterations for balance depending on what happens here.
Introduction
Most creatures in Dwarf Fortress have a pet value, how much they are worth in Dorfbucks (*). Dogs, for example, are worth 30*, badgers 25*, and Giant Cave Spiders 2,500* or so. These values can be found in the raws, either on the wiki or in your own folders. This value will be used to create your team.
Each player wishing to join creates a team of animals worth up to 100 Dorfbucks. This team will be entered in battles, and winners will earn Dorfbucks to spend on new team members. Some special events will be hosted that are only entered voluntarily and might be challenging, but will reward victors with extra prizes.
Each team is sorted into one of the separate Divisions. Each team starts in the Bone Division, and as they win they increase in Division. Two wins in a division will bring your team up to the next Division. While keeping balance between the teams, going up to higher Divisions will unlock new things to purchase for your team. If you are in the Copper Division and above, for example, you can purchase armor for the creatures in your team. Divisions also enforce a cap on the number of creatures you can have in your team. The full list is below.
- Bone Division! The starting division for a team. You can only purchase creatures with the [PET] or [PET_EXOTIC] tag for your team. 30 creature limit to your team.
- Copper Division! Armor has been unlocked, allowing you to purchase Wood and Copper armor for your creatures. (Any creature can be equipped with armor, test it yourself.) You also get the option to buy lives, at a price of 50 Dorfbucks each. 45 creature limit to your team.
- Bronze Division! Bronze armor is now available. Any creature without a [PET] or [PET_EXOTIC] tag is made available. 60 creature limit to your team.
- Iron Division! Iron armor is available. You can purchase Magma Drops now! 75 creature limit to your team.
- Steel Division! Steel armor is now available. This is the highest rank, and some special challenges can be undertaken. 90 creature limit to your team.

Buying Team Members and Armor
At any time, you can purchase new team members and equipment, or sell team members and equipment for half their cost. Keep in mind the restrictions of your Division. If you have or purchase a creature that is [AQUATIC], your arena will be modified for your unique needs.
To find the cost of a piece of equipment, multiply its base value by the material you are trying to buy.
This is the cost of armor (thank you, digitCruncher):
Cap: 5
Sock: 6
Shoe: 8
Low Boot: 9
Gauntlet: 11
Helmet: 12
High Boot: 12
Breastplate: 15
Mail Shirt: 20
Leggings: 23

Cloak: 26
Material Multipliers:

Wolf Leather: x1
Copper: x2
Bronze: x10
Iron: x40
Steel: x360
Spoils of War (It isn't actually war, but it sounds cool that way)
Each battle your team undertakes will earn you Dorfbucks. The amount you earn is equal to 25% of the pet value of the creature you kill. If you manage to off a warthog during the battle, worth 100 Dorfbucks, and still loose the match, your team gains 25 dorfbucks for the kill. This value will be rounded up in the case of fractions.
Defeat
Defeat is not nearly as final as it is in other arenas. Each team starts with three lives. Every time you are defeated, one of these lives will be taken away. Once you have no lives, defeat will mean the permanent death of 20% of your team, rounded up. Keep in mind that you can buy lives for 50 Dorfbucks once you enter the Copper Division.
Changes to Vanilla
Some changes to vanilla Dwarf Fortress have been changed. They are listed here.
Beak Dog - Pet value changed to 75*. A beak dog can kill two dogs reliably, but is defeated by three.
Helmet Snake - Pet value changed to 150*. Syndromes are expensive.
I aim to make this thread enjoyable. I will not fall off the face of the earth, I'm not going to move, or do anything out of the ordinary. I will also mix up the usual 1vs1 with special events. They will be voluntary only, and will often be more dangerous than a 1vs1 match.
Other than that, have fun all and good luck!
