Well, the nuclear batteries we use to power our lasers are still the best in the world! They don't last as long as some of the newest ones, but they are the most powerful! What did you think I was talking about?

The fact they don't last as long is the problem for your lasers. that and the fact they don't work in most atmospheric conditions.

But they are usable in space, as we used them in the third world war (remember that time where we destroyed your battle station, Canada?) Why would you want a laser battery that last for three hours and takes two hours to destroy most standard hulls, when you can have one that last one hour and takes ten minutes to obliterate a full ship!
