As some of you might know, I've been working on a 40k RTD ever since Space Marine got me back on the grimdark mood. Having spent last night scrawling feverish notes about the game, I decided it's time I actually start it, before my creative juices run out.
---
An Ork Waaaaagh! is never easily halted, and thus the call goes out for reinforcements. Throughout the sector, the Departmento Munitorum raises its tithes, freshly-recruited men and women from every world organized into barely functioning regiments and shipped into the waiting fleets in orbit. Gamada is no different, and six inexperienced PDF volunteers find themselves conscripted into the new 66th Armoured or the 320th Mechanized, the newest two the planet has supplied to the endless fronts of the Imperium of Man.
However, Lord-Governor Thykus, always obsessed with tradition, has demanded the tour of the system and the accompanying demonstrations and parades are still carried through, despite the certain doom awaiting neighbouring Magral Primaris in the hands of the Orks. He has singlehandedly stalled the Liberation Fleet for over a week. The worlds of the sector witness the might of the 320th and 66th regiments, a spectacle they have seen a hundred times before. Heated arguments between the Lord-Governor and the fleet commanders rage for days to no avail.
At last, the two regiments reach their last destination, a quiet agri-world called Saduk. They settle in and begin their exercises, expecting nothing they have not experienced before...

Background (optional):
Starting PositionsSquad Leader
Having already ascended to a high position in the ranks of the PDF, you were an ideal candidate when choosing sergeants for the new 320th Gamadan Mechanized. You're a born leader - the troops might love you or fear you, but it doesn't matter as long as they do as you say. Who knows, if you perform well enough on the battlefield, you might be in for a promotion or two. The Lord-Commander keeps an eye on particulary brave and skilled squad leaders, or so they say. At the very least, Colonel Menek seemed to like you the last time you met.
You command a squad of 7 Guardsmen, armed with lasguns and a single support weapon, and supported either by a Chimera transport, a Hellhound flame support vehicle or its more exotic Devil Dog anti-tank variant.
Tank Commander
You've been fortunate enough to rise to the command of one of the most effective fighting machines known to man, the Guard's Leman Russ tank. Whether it was done by skill and leadership qualities or the right connections is hardly important. There is nothing that can stand against the gods of war that are the heavy tanks of the Imperial Guard. Your crew follows your orders to the best of their abilities, which is more than enough against any xenos or traitor foolish enough to stand against you.
You command a Leman Russ Battle Tank or its Leman Russ Exterminator variant, armed with twin-linked autocannons instead of the mighty battle cannon of the Battle Tank.
Sanctioned Psyker
Like many others throughout the Imperium, the Black Ships of the Inquisition found you as a young boy. You have no memory of your parents or your home planet, but you have something better in their place - the psychic potential to devastate entire armies, honed to near-perfection and trained for war and war only. You are a battle psyker of the Imperial Guard, hated and feared by lesser men and more powerful than they could even imagine. You sweep aside enemy armies with a wave of your hand, banish daemons with a smile, tear apart hostile psychics with ease. You know this in your heart, and are more than willing to test the extent of your powers against the Alien, the Mutant and the Heretic.
You are a Sanctioned Psyker and possess powerful but unpredictable abilities. Your training gives you an edge over inexperienced psykers, but dealing with the Warp is never completely safe.
Campaigns and Battle HonoursThis RTD is split into several Campaigns, consisting of three or more Battles, which range from straightforward engagements to complex multi-stage missions. After each successful Battle, you are granted Battle Honours, which are upgrades that can range from another squad under your command to a specific weapon or piece of equipment, or an useful Perk.
Between Battles, you are free to do anything you wish within your current location, most likely the regimental camp. Who knows what you'll find?
If you lose squad members or damage your tank, emergency repairs or reinforcements are applied between Battles. Full reinforcements, repairs and replenishing ammunition will have to wait until the end of a Campaign.
SystemI'm using a modified version of the system I use in Nowhere To Run and Roll To Body Jump. I'll explain it and the new additions briefly here. Most rolls are made with a normal 1d6, plus bonuses or penalties.
Whenever you want to attack someone, you need to make a Combat Roll. This allows you to enter combat, where the enemy will roll for Dodge. 1 on a Dodge roll is a critical hit and grants a 30% damage bonus to hit. 3 likewise gives a 30% penalty to damage, representing a glancing shot or attack. Damage is determined by the weapon used and some Perks, as well as Range.
Range is split into Close and Long Range. Trying to shoot at the latter range results in an accuracy penalty with most weapons and a minor damage penalty.
Counter-attacks are made if the defender is still alive after the first attack and capable of fighting back. Even if the attacker's Combat Roll fails, the defender still gets his Counter-Attack. This is mostly to make combat move faster. Counter-attacks are made automatically, and you may want to stop yourself from using them if you're running low on ammo.
Being in cover grants a +1 Dodge bonus.
Vehicle Combat doesn't differ much from normal combat, except for some details. Vehicles cannot counter-attack, but they can fire multiple weapons on the same turn, unlike infantry. Most weapons do reduced damage against vehicles unless they are classified as Heavy Weapons.
Tactics are special actions you can attempt to use every turn. They require you to pass a Leadership roll but are usually more effective than normal attacks.
Focus Fire (-1): On a success, troops get a -2 to Enemy Dodge on the chosen target.
Suppressing Fire (-1): On a success, the enemy receives a -2 to Combat Rolls on the turn.
Lightning Assault (-2): On a success, troops charge into melee with a -1 to Enemy Dodge and the enemy cannot counter-attack.
Overwatch (+0): Troops ignore visible targets unless attacked, but fire on any new enemies entering the area, who receive a -1 Dodge penalty.
Tank Shock (+0): Charge at infantry at full speed, granting -2 to their Combat Roll at the expense of being unable to fire the main weapon. Vehicle Only.
Rapid Fire (-1): Everybody fires two shots instead of one on the turn, but with a +1 to Enemy Dodge.
Dispersed Volley (-1): Unit targets multiple foes with a +1 to Enemy Dodge and a -10% damage per foe.
When using psychic abilities, you roll for Focus, which determines if they are used on the correct target or area, Control, which determines if you manage to keep control of your powers or if you end up as daemon-fodder and Power, which determines the overall power of the ability.
