Has it ever occured to anybody that the goblin snatchers may simply be trying to save dwarven children from the life of a dwarf fortress. I mean, sure goblins have some questionable ethics, but not nearly as bad as the things we do in dwarf fortresses...
It also applies to trying to siege for treasure. They may not be trying to steal dwarven treasure, they may just be trying to rid the world of the dwarven scourge.

Really? My fortresses are usually benign, full of production and brew. I keep them fed and busy building. The goblins are snatchers.

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

The title of the game really makes me think about this. Slaves to Armok? Hmm...

In my current world, goblins are at war with the White Tigermen.

They have saved my fortress from each other several times.  Warms my dwarves' coal-black little hearts...

Meaning, he has roughly the same control over Dwarf Fort that Toady has. (+/- 5 Control Urists)

I believe Armok was once but a name, created by the Almighty Toady, but due to our faithful donation of blood, bloodlust, blood donation and (blood)rage, he has become the God of Blood... Bloodgod!

This thread has been de-railed, courtesy of Armok... and goblins, who stole the rails.

There is the whole problem of goblins being ok with cannabilism, torture, and assault. After all, they are merely personal matters, not something to bother civilizations with.

Which brings the question whether "war with goblins" is considered a war by the goblins. It might just be that once a goblin attacked you (and was slaughtered), there ended up being a tantrum spiral in their fortress. Instead of destroying their own stuf fthough, they decided to take it out on dwarves. You kill the first wave's family, and then their friends, and so forth.

And maybe the whole "stealing children" thing is about replacing their own lost children. The wound in a parents heart over a lsot child might just drive them to seek other children and adopt them.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...

Alright. So i agree goblins are a force for good because i abuse, torture and encase my inhabitants in obsidian on a mad whim. It just means slaughtering goblins is just that bit more satisfying! Die you goody goody green skinned little gobshytes!

You are obviously no Dwarf:

I suspect it has been done, but haven't looked for the Ethics list for [CREATURE:DWARF_FORTRESS_PLAYER].  I suspect it is closer to Goblin ethics than Dwarf... of course that is assuming we are supposed to be the same entity as CREATURE:DWARF.

Come to think of it, that would explain why their military tactics never seem to make much sense.

Ygglybuk has spoken to me! There is a way into the fortress of the enemy, by which we will triumph- through the well!"

*goblins drown*

*dwarves die of thirst after refusing to drink from tainted well*
