Why can't knives and daggers cut through clothing?
« on: May 30, 2013, 06:20:00 am »

Just out of curiosity.  I like making knife-wielding adventurers, and my total inability to wound anyone through the slash attack is annoying.

in fort mode long daggers are actually kind of terrifying as real assassin weapons (stupid kobolds) and various carving forks and boning knifes really hurt in the hands of those night monsters. Maybe it's your skill level?

Yeah, large daggers (at least if they're make from good material) have proven to be pretty deadly things. One snatcher managed to wound two of my dwarves until his dagger got stuck into one farmer's chest. Another one even managed to slash one hand off with large iron dagger.

What kind of knife are you using? Carving knives really suck, but other kinds of knives should be prettu deadly. At least in stabbing.

My adventurers always use a large copper dagger, and I can only use stab attacks, because the slash attacks always get deflected by clothing.

large silver daggers can decapitate dogs and civilians.

copper is not a good edge weapon material though, stabbing with copper should work due to weight, however slashing might not work
a very good post here, from 2010 though, but it clearly shows soft metal edge weapons largely fail against any kind of armor

even at stabbing it won't do much against most armor, including clothing. Try making a knife out of copper wire. With enough, some heat and a hammer you can actually get some edge and a point to it, but it encounters a lot of trouble even against some fabrics. Add to that another curiosity from DF, if I remember it correctly. Larger clothing actually provides more protectin the larger it gets. I think this came up in a discussion about escaped demons posing as human kings. Since they pose like that they wear clothing, but because they are huge, it serves more like kevlar. The point to that, it might be that it's a bit more protective for humans too vs daggers (most of us have only seen dwarfs butchered with long daggers). If you add to that only using a copper weapon, the end result is fairly predictable
