Well alright! Made my afternoon man. I don't suppose I can grab that pegasus swordpony can I?

Sure thing, Scimitar is yours.  Did you want to rename him or anything?  Also worth noting that he's married to Pepper Flakes, and is 57 years old (Pepper Flakes is 63).  If you want me to adjust any of that I can.  :)

Given I dunno when the whole "Could drop dead at any moment" age is for these particular ponies, I'd ask to scale the age back a bit if possible. Otherwise I'm good.

Ages 60-120, which I think I lifted straight out of the human raws.  So I can scale him back to say, 35 or so?

That'll work, yes. Improved chances of actually being useful in a fight.

Praetorian is on the training grounds, stretching and limbering up in preparation for the first sparring session between him and Serenity. As he sees her approach, he waves, and collects the sparring spear from the rack.

Serenity waves in return and approaches. She carries a scabbard with two training weapons across her back, and a brightly colored paper parasol across her shoulder. “Hey there, Tor. I see you’re all ready?”

“Indeed I am, Serenity. Are you ready, or would you prefer some time to get ready before we start?” he asks.

She sets her things aside. “Well, I’d like a little time to prepare. It’s been some time since I’ve done this, after all...”

“Indeed. Well,” he says with a smile, “whenever you’re ready.”

Serenity nods. She warms up with a few stretches, before taking her training weapons - a wooden estoc and rondel - and making a few practice swings.

Praetorian, taking advantage of the extra time, draws out his shield and training spear, and practices a few strikes with them.

Satisfied with her performance, Serenity finishes. “Well, I’m ready when you are.”

“Then... let us begin,” he says, turning once more to her, and readying his shield and spear.

Serenity keeps her distance, skirting around to the side, weapons twirling idly in her magic.

Praetorian circles, keeping an eye on both Serenity and her weapons, with his shield up.

After a few circles, Serenity swings her estoc at Praetorian’s foreleg.

Praetorian swings his shield in to block the swing, and stabs at her with his spear.

Serenity uses the opening to try to sneak her rondel under his shield, and just barely sidesteps the spear.

Praetorian pulls himself back, swinging his spear around to try to hit Serenity with its butt.

Serenity brings her estoc up to block the swing, but it requires all of her magical strength to do so. She loses hold on the rondel and it clatters to the floor.

Praetorian withdraws his spear, and waits for her to get ready again.

Serenity retrieves her weapon, and begins again with a double thrust from the side.

Praetorian brings up his shield to defend, and stabs rapidly at Serenity in response.

Serenity dances to one side, and drags the rondel down across his shield, almost to the floor, and tries to make a swipe across his belly.

Praetorian lowers his defences as he pushes his shield forward, attempting to hit Serenity with the boss of the shield.

Serenity grins wide as she sees her opening, and stabs straight upward, poking Praetorian in the belly with the blunted wooden tip. Of course, she entirely forgets about the shield heading towards her and takes the full force of the blow.

Praetorian pulls his shield back, and moves towards the mare. “Serenity, you okay?” he asks, a slight hint of worry in his voice. He remembered when that had happened to him in training, and it hadn’t been fun.

“I, uh...” she manages, in a daze. She shakes the fog from her head - or tries to, at least. All she manages to do is set the whole world to spinning.

Praetorian frowns, and drops his spear and shield, picking up Serenity in his magic. “Hmm. Do you want to see the doctor, or just lie down a while?”

With Praetorian’s help, Serenity manages to get to her hooves. “I... think I’ll be alright. I’ve taken a few blows before.”

“You sure?” he asks. “We can wait for a while if you want to.”

Serenity takes a step, and nearly falls on her face. “Okay... maybe it would be nice to lie down for a bit...”

“Okay then,” says Praetorian, and he helps her find a more comfortable position to sit in. “You’re a good fighter, but you need to keep an eye on the prize,” he says with a little smile.

Serenity manages a chuckle. “Yes, I suppose I should’ve seen that coming.”

“I missed it when I was in training, too. Don’t be too unhappy about it,” he says, keeping the smile on his face.

“Well, most of my training is for sport. I’ve only ever had to fight similarly armed ponies. Maybe you could teach me a few things?”

“I can do my best,” says Praetorian. “If you’re looking to become a professional, it could help a bit,” he continues with a little chuckle.

She chuckles. “Oh, no, I’m not looking to become a soldier. Just enough to keep in practice, stay in shape, maybe scare a cutpurse off if the need arises, gods forbid.”

“Heh, I doubt anypony would continue after that little display of your skill,” he says with a smile. “You’re already quite good, but I’ll be happy to help you learn how to fight against different weapons.”

Serenity leans into him. “Thank you.”

Praetorian puts a foreleg around Serenity. “It’s my pleasure, Serenity.”

~Maize's Diary~ 14th Limestone, 270
Morning Dew and Temperance hooked up! They both seem to be really happy, especially Morning Dew. She'd been struggling so much with all the ponies talking bad about her.

21st Limestone
Temperance's parents showed up. Miss Faith, his mama, is a priest, and she's going to marry Temperance and Morning Dew. She and Ward, Temperance's daddy, also promised to help me marry Praetorian! They also taught me lots about the gods and stuff, and we prayed for Duskfields.

2nd Sandstone
Me and Praetorian got married yesterday.

I can't feel my back legs. I don't think Praetorian can move.

6th Sandstone
Got a new farm tilled. Legs are still sore, but I can't just not work. That wouldn't be fair to poor Morning Dew.

Parasprites are evil. These parasprites are even more evil than the ones back at home.

14th Timber
They... they killed a pony. Poor stallion didn't have a chance. Praetorian tried to stop the evil thing, but it was too late. I feel really bad for Praetorian, he's been really sad about it.

Serenity saw me get riled up a bit, asked if I want to talk about it. I might have to have a session with her that's more than just talking and loving now.

Praetorian is wandering around the town, looking for Maize. It’d been a few days since the last Parasprite swarm had come, and he had just finished another training session with Serenity.

Maize walks out of the hospital, a smile on her face. She starts heading back to her room, gazing happily toward the militia’s training spot.

Praetorian quickly spots Maize, and hurries along to catch up with her. “Maize!” he calls.

Maize looks to her husband, and turns to face him. “Hey, Prae-Prae! I was just in the hospital.”

“I saw. Is anything wrong?” he asks as he gets alongside her. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” She looks around a bit, seemingly checking if anypony else is nearby. “I felt really odd this morning, so I went to get myself checked... I’m pregnant, Prae-Prae. We’re gonna have a baby!”

At first, Praetorian doesn’t know what to say, spluttering a little, before delight lights up his face, and he hugs his wife tight. “This is, this is, this is fantastic!” he finally says, kissing her.

“Isn’t it?” Maize returns the kiss as she wraps a hoof around Praetorian. “I’m not going to have it for a while, though. Case Study says it can’t be more than four months old by now. He’s actually surprised I’m not showing at all... guess my stomach just doesn’t want to grow.”

“That’s okay,” he says with a smile. “I love you just the way you are.” ‘Oh, mare, this is fantastic!’ “Did you have a name in mind for the foal, or are we still going to have to decide on one?” he asks with a little laugh.

“I think we’ll have plenty of time to make up one, although I think Spice is a good name for either colt or filly.” She looks at Praetorian with a curious look. “How would you feel if I got fat?”

Praetorian starts mentally retreating. “I’d love you just as much. You’re my Maize, and I’ll love you no matter what.”

Maize grins devilishly. “Good save.” She leans in and gives him a big kiss on the lips. “Honestly, though, I’m not the kind of filly to get mad if you answer honestly.” She wraps her neck around him and kisses his withers. “Not like I’m ever gaining weight, anyway.”

“I’m being honest, there,” he protests. “I’d love you even if you were covered with lard. You’re the love of my life, Maize. Nothing could stop that.”

Maize chuckles. “That makes one of us.” She nuzzles his back a bit. “Not that I’d mind if you gained weight, as long as it didn’t cut off circulation... or make mounting up too hard.”

Praetorian colours a little, going an amusing range of purples and reds, before saying “Uh, well, that’s good.”

“I’d still love you, though. You’re still my hubby, no matter what.” Maize pulls back, giving Praetorian’s neck kisses all the way up to his mouth. “I’d just feel bad about making you jealous or something. And I’d miss your... stamina.”

Praetorian manages to remain at least a little stoic this time, beyond a little purple colouring. “I’m sure you would miss that. And my skill with a spear.”

“I would.” Maize grins seductively. “You know, I wouldn’t mind a little demonstration right now, if you’re willing.”

“Hmmm, well, I’ve got a little downtime now,” he says. “I’m sure I have enough.”

Maize turns toward her room again, wrapping her tail around Praetorian’s withers and pulling him along.

A scene from a little while back that I forgot to post. Oops. It takes place shortly after Crosshair is taken to see Serenity by Cream Puff.

Late in the day Flamberge goes in search of Crosshair.  He had finished training for the day and abandoned his armor in favor of a nice shirt and jacket.

Crosshair had finished her patrols earlier, and already went back home to get herself cleaned up and changed into something more comfortable, she was about to go out and find some dinner to eat. Grabbing her crossbow with her, she’s not one to go anywhere unarmed when Danger could happen any moment.

Arriving at her doorstep, Flamberge straightens his shirt and checks his sword at his side before knocking three times upon the door.

The door opened, to a smiling Crosshair. “Good Evening, Flam!” she chirped happily, seeing who it was.

"Evening Cross. Care to join me for dinner?" he asks.

“I’d love to!” She replied cheerfully, already in a light, breezy, white dress. as she came out of her room, ready to leave for dinner with her commander.

After Crosshair locks up her door, the young couple makes their way toward the dining hall, Flamberge drapes his wing over her as they walk.

Crosshair happily lean closer into him, nuzzling softly into his neck as he hold her with a wing like so. Her trots have a cheerful bounces in them.

When they arrive in the dining hall, Flamberge acquires their food, he attempts to make small talk with Cream Puff as he does so, it doesn’t go over well. Finding a table unoccupied, and mostly off to one side away from the crowds, they sit.

Crosshair frowned as she sees that the talk didn’t go so well. “You know.. Puff took me to Serenity a couple of days earlier.. They think you were abusing me.”

Flamberge drops his fork to the table, and begins speaking obviously concerned, “They...They think what? Wh...why would they think that? What did you say?”

Crosshair does a little shrug “I said that it’s not the case, of course. Sure you were a little rough on me that night but it’s not like you did anything wrong, although they insist that you did.”

Flamberge still looks worried, "You know that I would never want to hurt you? Right?  And I don't mean to take things out on you.  I love you."

The small mare beamed and lean over to give her commander’s nose a soft nuzzle and kiss, cooing softly “I know, Flam.. that’s why I said that they’re wrong.”

Flamberge looks relieved, "Good.  Good," he says. Taking back his fork and beginning to eat.  After swallowing he adds "so I take it you haven't had any luck with convincing Puff?"

Crosshair nommed her meal aswell, nodding as she gulps down her mouthful “Not so much.. She thinks you’re Nuts, although she said that the problem’s not about having more than one.. so maybe we’ll have a chance still if we prove to her that you’re not nuts, then she can join in!” She chirped eagerly.

"Mmm I hope so... Er did she tell you why she thinks I'm nuts?" Questions Flamberge already well aware of why she did.

“Something about you saying that you’ll one day be king of ponies or something like that.” Crosshair answered dismissively.

Flamberge huffs, "So having a little ambition makes me a dangerous nut now?" He angrily takes a bite of salad as if the carrots themselves had insulted him.

“That’s what I thought, right? Just because you wanted your life to be better for you, and everypony around you, doesn’t makes you nut!” Crosshair agreed.

Flamberge nods, "And maybe King is a bit high to aim, but it's only a matter of time before Duskfields is recognized as an official Barony of the kingdom and the king will naturally make me Baron, and that's a start."

Crosshair beamed “And I’d be glad to be there by your side when that happens!”

Flamberge nods. "Yeah, I wanted to share that day with both you and Puff... but I guess if she doesn't come around it's her own loss. "

Crosshair sighed slightly “Mm.. I guess.. I’d be nice with her, though.”

"And speaking of the future, where do you see yourself going?"  He asks.

“Well..” she begins to blush softly “Besides being a proper captain of the guards.. I can see myself as a mother, that’s for sure.” she coos happily at him.

"Hmm, well, when the timing is better. When the wall is built and my town is safer. I'll be happy to help with that," he smiles at her reaching out to hold her forehoof with his.

Crosshair happily rests her forehoof on his as he holds it, beaming brightly at him, blushing still “Mm.. I don’t know though.. with the way we’ve been.. you know?.. I might become one soon..”

Flamberge shrugs, "You have a point,  and if that happens then that's okay with me. Still maybe we should be more cautious, Duskfields is not the best place for a foal."

“We’ll keep them safe, though.” Crosshair nodded. “So... what do you think about marriage?” She asked further, her cheeks brightening up.

"Do you mean the institution in general or more specifically?" Flamberge asks with a slight chuckle.

That made her giggle slightly “Well.. about us. I was wondering.. that if I become a mother.. would that make me a wife too?”

"Hmm well. It could, but..." Flamberge trails off without finishing his sentence.

Crosshair tilted her head slightly. “But...?”

Flamberge hesitates,  "I... don't think you'll like what I'm about to say.  Promise to try and be reasonable okay?"

Crosshair was already feeling a dreadful feeling inside, but nods carefully.

"Don't take this as a lack of commitment from me Crosshair, I love you and fully intend to spend my life with you.  However, if I, no, if we, want me to be king one day, then my wife, will need to be chosen, not for love, but for advancing, our status. Can you accept that Crosshair?"

She frowned, lowering her ears and gazes down slightly to her empty plate. “Why can’t I be the one that does that?...” She questioned.

"What do you mean, why can't you?" Flamberge asks legitimately confused.

“Why can’t I be the one that advances our statuses?” Crosshair asked more firmly now. “Why does it have to be some other mares?”

Flamberge sighs, "Crosshair, unless you've been hiding that you're really a runaway princess I don't see how you can do that."

Crosshair sighs and put her fork down, suddenly not so very hungry anymore. “I understand..”

"I'm sorry Crosshair. But I think you'll be happier as the King's favorite mistress them as the wife of a poor nobody." Flamberge caresses her hoof as he speaks.

She looks up hopefully at him again “Will I.. ever be your wife?

Flamberge sighs again, "It isn't impossible, so maybe."

Crosshair nodded blankly “Well.. I guess there’s that..”

Flamberge looks her in the eyes grasping both her forehooves with his own, "It'll be better this way.  Does the word wife really matter that much?  We'll still be together."

“But there’ll be somepony else too..”

"There'll be Puff as well.  And you're okay with that.  Perhaps you'll like the other mare as well.  And besides that's still a long way off." Flamberge reasons.

“Mm.. Perhaps, I guess it’s best not to think so much about it right now then?” Crosshair reasoned back.

Flamberge nods in agreement.

Steel Rivet's Journal

24th Galena, 720
Another foal was born today. His mother named him Mittens. Odd.

21st Limestone, 270
Temperances' parents apparently came to Duskfields today. Not that I would know. I find myself staying in my forge more and more these days. I prefer the seclusion.

22nd Limestone, 270
Another thief, and more neighbors. Nothing else other than that.

1st Sandstone, 270
Well, well, well. We had not one, but TWO weddings today. How fortunate.

6th Sandstone, 270
More fecking parasprites.

The writing on this page is shaky, almost hastily scribbled. The sloppiness is glaring compared to the normal neat and precise runes.
14th Timber, 270
Ancestors...
They came. And they came in force.
Poor Millstone. He never stood a chance.
This settles it. Any doubts I had before are gone in light of this.

A wise creature once told me that a hammer is the smith's most powerful tool:
Something that can be used to create.
Or destroy, if need be.

So, I shall create something to destroy. To shatter my enemies bones and cast them down. They will RUE this day.

Steel Rivet closes his journal softly, then sets it back down on the shelf. He normally mellow golden eyes seem to burn from within, glittering with equal parts rage, and determination. "No more." The pegasus gets up form his desk and walks over to the doors to the forge. He slams them shut with an ominous sounding BOOM! The forge lights up the room with a cherry red glow that begins to slowly burn brighter. The bellows begin to rise and fall, and smoke begins to rise from the chimney. None shall disturb him. Unconsciously, Steel Rivet begins to sing. Although, singing is not really a proper description. It's more of a lilting chant, rising and falling to the rhythm of the hammer. The ringing of ore being shaped provides the beat. If another pony was there, the first thing they might notice would be that Steel Rivet's eyes no longer have whites or pupils. Instead, they are glowing pools of liquid golden color.

Diary 1

Lost my old one, heh. Not that I am really complaining, I rarely wrote in it anyway. Neverless, good news to start off this new one: Smoothblock and I are something. Probably not a couple, but good friends anyway. I did wake up out a booze-induced sleep near her on the floor of her shack, so there's that.

Ahem.

Woooooooooyeaaaahhh! Finaly!

Diary 2

One of the doctors gave birth to a foal. I just thought she was fat. I really need to slow down. Everyone around me is seemingly hooking up, in a relationship, or taking care of there foals. It makes me feel old. I mean, thirty six is not old, right? I really doubt that I am the oldest pony out out of my little circle of friends.

Also, on a second note, I heard rumors of a order to arm everypony here with crossbows. Frankly, I would think that a little dabbling in fireing one would hurt nopony, but I have to disagree with it. No pony needs to spend more time then they need to with a weapon of war.

Frankly, if I had to join the milita, I would ask for a axe.

Diary 3

Buncha new ponies today. Interested in the priest fellow, he looks decent enough. Kids name is Sanctuary.

Diary 4

Maize and Praetorian married. I wonder what is going through that stallions head.

Diary 5

A pony died due to the chaos-touched today, and I stood away from Smoothblock during the funaral. This is it. I am going to ask if I can join the military after a certiant point, if only to be prepared. Going to ask for a axe my size to be made, and hopefully some armor. Not now, however. I am going to bring it up with Temperance.

Cream Puff hums to herself as she sets up the little picnic for her and Crosshair.  It had been a while since they really had a chance to just hang out together, so Puff was more than happy to accept when Cross suggested a little meal by the river.

Crosshair didn’t leave her friend waiting for long before arriving where they agreed on, She took the decency to change from her guard uniform into a breezy white loose dress for the picnic, Landing just closeby before trotting up to her “Puff!” She called, beaming happily

“Cross!”  Puff smiles and hugs her friend.  “I just finished setting up!”  She releases her and walks over to the food: just a few sandwiches and some salad, along with some juice to drink.

“Looks good, Puff!” Crosshair beamed, giving her friend a soft friendly nuzzle as she walked over to the picnic with her. Beaming brightly “Glad you could find some time for me today, Puff.”

Puff beams brightly in return.  “Me too!  It’s been so long since we were able to just sit back and relax together.”

“I know, right?” Cross said, laying down onto the blanket with all of her legs tucked to herself, sighing contently and smiling at her friend. “We just seems to be so busy nowadays.”

Puff giggles and sits next to her friend.  “Seriously!  I’m just glad we can at least meet for a few minutes at meals.  Heh, and for little things like this.”

The slightly smaller mare nodded with a giggle aswell. “Mmhm! I wish we’d get to spend more time together though. Really miss spending them with you, Puff.” Crosshair murmured, picking up one of the sandwiches to noms them, beaming. “Mmm.. Delicious as always!”

“Thanks!”  Puff grabs a sandwich of her own and starts eating, enjoying good food and good company.

Cross enjoyed a moment of relaxation and quietness with her friend, listening to the forest and the water as the two noms away at their sandwiches. “Mm.. heh, I wonder what was it that made us leave the comfortable city life for this..”

Puff thinks as she chews, then talks after swallowing.  “Having room to grow.  Sure, life was stable back there, but it was boring!  Out here... we can be us!”

“Mhm.. with nopony to judge us.” Cross beamed happily again, swallowing another bit of her sandwich before scooting a bit closer to her friend.

She nods.  “Nopony tells us what to cook.”

Cross scoots a bit closer. “Nopony tells us what’s good to buy..”

“Or how to dress.”  Puff takes another bite of her lunch.

“Who to be friends with.” Cross added in, taking a sip of her juices before she scoots in close enough to let her sides touch her friend’s.

Puff smiles and lays a wing over her friend, fondly remembering when they used to just sit together and talk about nothing.

Cross sighed a happy sigh and smiles as she lay her wing over her friend aswell, letting each others hold each others under their wings. “I’m scared.. you know?” She begin up. Leaning a little onto Puff’s neck.

Puff swallows her bite and gives her friend a concerned look.  “Scared?  Of what?”

“Of losing you.” She answered with a soft sigh and closes her eyes. “With so many things happening.. Parasprites.. discordians.. I’m just afraid that one day you just.. wouldn’t be around anymore, you know?”

Cream Puff smiles at her friend and strikes a heroic pose.  “Are you kidding?  That diamond dog didn’t want none of this!  Those Discordians better watch out, or I’ll bash their heads in with my good pans, and then I’ll really get angry!”

Crosshair giggles from that, giving her friend’s muzzle a soft nuzzle again. “Mm, I’m glad you’re confident, Puff. I still can’t help but worried, maybe it wouldn’t be you but It’d be me, I mean I am the Captain of the guards, I’m supposed to be out there between everypony and danger. What if one day some lucky discordian got the better of me and caught me off guard? I just.. don’t want to not be able to eat your delicious food and spend times with you again, you know?”

“You’ve got sharp eyes, Cross.  No way any crazy pony is going to get the drop on you.”

“Everypony make mistakes, Puff.” Said cross with a soft sigh again, picking up her last piece of sandwich to noms it. “And I’ve got so much left to do..”

Puff gives her a friendly nuzzle.  “You’ll get to do it, Cross.  You are the Captain of the Guard.  They don’t just give that title away, you know.”

Cross smiled from her friend’s nuzzle and comforting words and return the nuzzle softly again “I know, Puff.. I know.. But I don’t think I’ll get what I truly wants, though..” She sighed again with a soft frown. “It’s just.. weird, and ponies won’t approve of it..”

Puff gives her a confused look.  “Hmm?”

Crosshair finishes the last bit of her sandwich and downs it with her juices, wiping her muzzle slightly after as she gazes away from her friend to look at the flowing river. “Living out here, where danger lies everywhere.. it made me realize something, Puff.. It made me realize just how important life is, and how dear everypony is to everypony..”

Puff nods, mirroring her friend in finishing her food and drink.

“And you’re very dear to me, Puff..” Cross said, looking down slightly, pawing at the blanket softly with a hoof. “We’ve always helped each other even back in the city. And whenever either of us have problems, we’d talk about it and help one another through it. And it’s a very beautiful thing..”

Puff smiles at her.  “Of course!  You’re my best friend, Cross!  Through thick and thin, I’ll always be there for you!”

Cross smiled slightly, still gazing at the river. “Mm.. But.. now I want to be more than just friends with you, Puff..”

She quirks an eyebrow at Cross, looking slightly confused.

The smaller mare just sighs and slumps down onto the blanket, flopping her ears down. “Just.. Just forget it, Puff.. I’m sorry for saying that..” Crosshair apologized, sounding somewhat troubled.

Puff lays down beside her friend.  “Aw, come on, Cross.  Tell me.”

Crosshair blushed as Puff lays beside her, she turns her face to look at her friend right in the eyes. “I... I love you, Creampuff. I love everything that’s about you, I love your food, I love your personality, I love your time and spending them with you, I just..” She sighed and look down. “I just love you.. but I know you don’t swing that way..” She began to tears up slightly, lowering her ears.

Puff is dumbfounded.  She never suspected!  Crosshair’s tears, though, snap her to attention, and she gives her friend a gentle hug.  “Oh, Cross... I’m sorry.”

Cross didn’t push her friend away, but lean into her friend’s comforting hug. Trying very hard not to cry. “N-no no.. It’s.. It’s my fault, Puff.. you didn’t do anything w-wrong..” She said, trying not to make those come out as sobs with varying degrees of success.

Puff gently pats her withers as she holds her friend.  “You still hurt, though, and it’s because of me.”

“You.. didn’t do anything wrong.. for just being you..” Crosshair managed to say out without whimpering, holding onto Puff aswell as she let out deep sighs, trying to keep calm and not cry. “And I.. love you for being you..”

Puff keeps holding her.  “I care deeply about you, too, Cross.  Just... not like that.  You’re my best friend.”

“I know, Puff.. I know.. That’s why I told you to forget it..” Cross sighed again and just rests her head down slightly. “You’re my bestest friend.. and I love you so, but I also don’t want to scare you away because I’m being weird and liking a mare..”

She lifts Cross’ gaze with a wing and gives her a soft smile.  “You’re not going to scare me away, Cross.  We won’t be lovers, but we’re still friends... right?”

The smaller mare gave a slight smile. “Yeah..” She sighed softly before lean in to bop noses with Puff. “I just wish we could be more sometimes.. might not even have to be a regular thing..”

Puff shakes her head slowly.  “You’re already in a relationship, Cross.”

Crosshair gloomed down a little bit more as she level her ears. “I know.. makes me all the more freaky.. But.. I can’t help myself! I just really.. Really want to spend great times with you every day, sharing things together, eat more of your food, share our lives together.. Plus, Flamberge should be fine about it.” She sighed. “But I suppose it’s just a dream for me and I’m supposed to wake up soon..”

Cream Puff gives her a hug.  “Me and Flamberge aren’t going to happen, Cross, even if you weren’t already with him.  I’m sorry we can’t be more than best friends...”

“I know Puff.. I know it’ll never happens.. but a filly can dream? Right?” Crosshair gave her friend a soft smile as they hug each other, nuzzling her lightly. “I’m sorry you don’t feel towards me the same way, Puff..” She murmured softly, nuzzling noses with the puffy mare, and before they knew it, she plants a soft kiss onto her muzzle, then lips. It was brief, sweet and gentle.

Puff’s eyes widen at the kiss, but it’s too brief for her to be able to pull away before Cross breaks it.  “Cross... I can’t.”

Crosshair nodded, before resting her head down onto the blanket again, not pushing her friend away or trying to hold her there “I know, Puff.. I know.. I just have been really wanting to do that for a long time now.. I’m sorry if.. if you don’t want to.. hang out with me anymore..”

“Hey, we can still hang out together.  But we’re not lovers... we’re friends.”  Puff gives her a soft smile.

“Best friends..” Crosshair gave her a soft smile aswell. resting her head into their hug. “And who knows? Maybe you’ll change your mind one day.. If you’re tired of not finding anypony, there’ll always at least be me!”

Puff smiles and nods at her friend.  “Best friends forever.”

It was late in the evening, most of the ponies of Duskfields had finished their dinner and gone home. Flamberge was the lone exception. Making his way into the tavern after a long flight around the area he approaches the counter and says, “Hello Cream Puff, one plate of whatever leftovers you have, please.”

Puff nods, staying professional while in the kitchen.  She may not really like him any more, but he still needs to eat, after all.  She sets about heating up some of what’s left, making him a grilled vegetable sandwich and a salad on the side.  “Here you are.”

Flamberge accepts the plate with a "Thank you." but instead of taking it to sit at one of the tables, he instead pulled up a stool and sat to eat at the counter, like they had all done before the tavern was built.

Puff nods and turns around to start cleaning up.  Flamberge was the last one to show up for dinner.  Now that everypony is accounted for, Puff can put the food away and get ready to relax, once the kitchen is clean.

"Puff, you've hardly said two words to me for months, what's wrong? We used to be friends." he asks, putting on a mask of ignorance.

Puff sighs and keeps cleaning as she talks.  “Yeah, and then you kissed me.”

Flamberge nods, "I know, I was there, and I distinctly remember you kissing me back. So why avoid me now?"

“Because it was a mistake.  I don’t like you like that any more, Flamberge.  And I was hoping to avoid this awkward conversation.”  Puff works at a stubborn bit of stuck on food as she talks, thinking about how similar it is to Flamberge right now.

"So, because you no longer want a romantic relationship, we can't be friends?" reasons Flamberge, between bites of his dinner.

Puff grumbles to herself, wondering why the jerk has to make such simple sense.  “We can be, as long as it doesn’t go past friendship.”

Flamberge smiles a faux grin, "I'm glad Puff. You and Crosshair are my two best friends in all the world, I wouldn't want to lose you like that."

Puff turns and gives him a slightly forced smile.  “Yeah...”

Flamberge eats in silence for a few minutes as Cream Puff works, then says, "You know, I know what Crosshair told you by the river, Cream Puff. And I don't know if this even factored into your decision, but if it did, I'll just tell you, I would be okay with it."

Cream Puff proves she’s a paragon of restraint by not braining Flamberge with the very heavy pan she’s cleaning.  “No, you didn’t factor into it.”

Flamberge nods, "Alright,I just wanted that out there." he says as he takes another bite of his food. After swallowing, he changes topics, "So, how have you been these last few months?"

Puff shrugs and finishes cleaning the dishes and whatnot.  “Been alright, keeping busy.  More migrants means more mouths to feed.  Much more and I really will need a sous chef to help me out.”

Flamberge nods while chewing his food, he then says, "Yeah, I've been busy too. Several new recruits to train, at least they seem to have more discipline and experience then RedHat did. I imagine you aren’t happy about my decision to arm the civilians, but I do think it’s for the best, and after Millstone, I expect more ponies will agree."

Puff shakes her head.  “Giving everypony a crossbow doesn’t bother me, though I hope you don’t expect me to do much with one.  I’ve tried shooting before.  ‘Hopeless’ doesn’t even begin to describe it.  Heh, just ask Crosshair.”

Flamberge leans back, as he says, "Yeah, I don't expect much from the civilians, but I do want some fortifications for them to shoot from, added to the walls, after the basic palisade is finished, but that's a ways off, however, I plan to have Crosshair leading demonstrations and training exercises for all the civilians. I'm leaving the details of scheduling that to the manager, but as soon as we have enough weapons to go around, and spare bolts for target practice..."

“As long as we aren’t expected to resemble anything organized.  I doubt many of us would be able to handle the kind of rough training you seem to put ponies through.”  Puff leans on her side of the counter, still in the comfort of the kitchen.  If she’s going to talk to Flamberge, maybe she can figure out if he’s abusing Crosshair like she suspects.

Flamberge smiles, "Oh, I don't plan to be as tough on the militia, as I am on my full time soldiers. Just target practice, formation drills, and maybe some basic hoof to hoof combat, just in case, they get cornered."

Puff thinks about that Diamond Dog she stumbled over so long ago and nods, glad it decided to run instead of try to start something.  “Makes sense, I suppose.”

"Yeah. I think Crosshair is looking forward to it," he says, before taking a drink from his cup.

The two continue making small talk while Flamberge finishes his meal, after he finishes he stands and says, "Well, good night Puff, I guess I'll see you for breakfast tomorrow. Sleep well Puff, I...we both still love you, if you ever change your mind." he turns and heads for the door.

“Nite Flamberge.”  Puff watches him go, thinking.  He was almost the stallion she thought he was during their talk... but things were subtly off.  Maybe she’s just overthinking things.  Or maybe Serenity is right about him.

Scimitar's Journal

5th Galena, 270

Well we've made our choice. Pepper wants to get way from the crowding in the capital, and I'm not really much of one to tell her otherwise. She's already packing what little stuff we can bring, so we'll probably be out of here by the end of the week.

At least we aren't going alone. A few ponies from the auxiliary guard here are coming two, along with their spouses if they got'em. At least we'll e able to make small talk on the trek I guess. Probably won't get to write in you again until we get there.

20th Galena, 270

Got a break, figured I'd write. March to Duskfields is going well. We managed to get a copy of a map from some merchants who said they'd been there before we set out. Should be there before the end of Limestone. Can't get there soon enough. If I hear another crappy joke from Rosebud I might have to look for something to hit her with.

21st Limestone, 270

We can see the town up ahead! We're taking a breather for the night since we've been walking for 18 hours a day to get here. I take back what I said, Rosebud is one tough old bitch to be making this trip on just grass and whatever we can find growing on bushes. We should be there tomorrow!

23rd Limestone, 270

well, we've settled in now that we're here. Pepper absolutely loves it. And I do to. It's a nice little town, has enough food for everypony, and I even got a job in the militia right off the bat! I gotta admit I am a little jealous of Flamberge's beard. Clearly he takes good care of it, and it looks quite fitting on an officer.

1st Sandstone, 270

Well well, one heck of a wedding happened today! I need to remember to give the newly weds my best.

Pepper's giving consideration to us having a foal here. I guess see a bunch of happy healthy little ones running around plus the wedding is getting to her a little bit, not that I'm opposed to the idea.

7th Sandstone, 270

Well. I learned the hard way yesterday that parasprites have sharper teeth on them than I thought. I'm glad pepper Flakes got away from the little freaks of nature and warned the rest of us. I had to get stitches thanks to the little bastards, and they might've pulled one of the younger foals apart if they got in the way of the little cretins and the food.

12th Sandstone, 270

Something doesn't seem right.... I feel like something's watching us. I'm probably just being paranoid.

15th Timber, 270

Things got messy yesterday... Real messy. Some old fellow named Millstone got iced in an attack. They snapped his neck... It must've been a terrible way to go. If I die in battle, I hope it's over quick.

(And another scene I've been waiting to post.)

Today, was suppose to be another morning where Crosshair goes to train and patrol with her commander, but that's not the case. She had not manage to go there yet at all and she's late for like a hour already! In her defense, she was busy being sick and puking in her room. Unable to get out, she hadn't even ate anything yet and she feels like she's going to die.

The commander expecting her to have just slept in goes and knocks on her door loudly.

Crosshair groaned, crawled over to her door and opens it, she barely made it to the door, still on the floor like so.

"Crosshair!" exclaims Flamberge, "what's the matter? Are you sick?" he asks while picking her up from the floor

She was weak and mostly limp, but find comfort in nuzzling into her commander. "nn.. I am.." she groaned.

“Do you need to see Case Study?"  he asked

“I'll be.. I'll be fine.." She said weakly before quickly turning around to puke into a bucket.

"You don't look fine. " he wraps a wing around her. "Come on.  Let' s go see the doctor. "

Crosshair didn’t have enough strength to wiggle her way off of him and just groans as she’s taken off and away to see the doctor.

Flamberge carries her on his back to Case Study's clinic and throws open the door without knocking,  laying her upon an open bed.

A certain light blue pony was slumped over in his chair, clearly asleep and drooling on a short stack of papers under his face. The noise of the sudden entrance caused him to produce a startled snore, “...in the paint? Put the frog...in the paint...” He then fell back into a deeper sleep.

"Doctor!" Flamberge nearly shouts, "You've got a patient."

“Glurgh!” He snaps out of it and jerks upright with a piece of paper stuck to the side of his face. He quickly paws it off and clears his throat. How embarrassing to be found asleep on the job. The doctor regains his composure in an instant, “Oh, um, what seems to be the problem Mr. Flamberge?”

Flamberge gestures to Crosshair. "Crosshair is sick. She's been vomiting and feels weak."

Shrugging off the lethargy, he rises to his hooves. “When did this all begin?” The doctor walked over to the white pegasus and tried to feel her forehead for a fever, “I don’t recall any illnesses going around Duskfields. She wasn’t bitten or stung by an insect, was she? Did she consume some questionably-prepared food?”

Crosshair groaned and had to fight back another wave as she whimpered out weakly “Not been bit.. Doctor.. a-and.. Puff’s food’s great..” Then she turned to the side of the bed and hurled into a conveniently placed bucket. Which happens to be a trash bin.

Flamberge places a hoof on her back gently as she does so, he looks to Case Study,  "Well doc?" He asks legitimately concerned.

“No fever, no spoiled food, no bites or stings...” he summarized as he narrowed his eyes and thought for a moment, “There are other possible causes, such as extreme anxiety. Another might be an intentional poisoning, but I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion of foul play just yet. It also could be...” he quickly flicked an eye to Flamberge and then back to Crosshair, “Pregnancy. One of the first signs of that is morning sickness. I can test for that immediately.”

The doctor walked over to his desk and opened a drawer. After he pulled out a stalk of tenderoot and snapped it in half to reveal the aromatic oils within, he explained, “Mares with morning sickness often find plants with strong odors to be revolting.” Case approached the miserable pegasus and offered her the green stem, “My apologies in advance, Ms. Crosshair, but would you mind taking a deep breath of this?”

The poor captain nodded weakly as she raised her head just enough to take a deep breath of it, Then puked out the rest of her stomach’s content into the bucket. Resulting in even more groan and whimpers

“I would say that works in favor of the pregnancy theory. Of course, the obvious question now is whether she could actually be pregnant. I don’t mean to intrude into your personal lives, but is it possible?” It was pretty obvious what he was asking.

Flamberge rubs Crosshair's back with his hoof as she wretches,  "uh yeah,  it's certainly possible." He replies.

The doctor nodded, “In that case, I currently believe that this is the most likely explanation. I can’t be absolutely certain of that at this moment, but time will tell soon enough if she is. Keep an eye out for unexplained weight gain. As for controlling the nausea, I would suggest giving her food and drink products made with ginger. Hopefully Ms. Puff will have some. Try to keep her diet simple as well, no exotic plants or anything with even smallest likelihood of containing toxins or irritants. If her symptoms worsen or if any new complications develop, come back to me immediately.”

Flamberge seems to light up at the news then frown again as Crosshair groans.  "Is there any way to ease her symptoms?" He questions.

“I’m afraid morning sickness is something that has to resolve on its own. Although the symptoms can be managed, that can’t be eliminated with normal medicine. It will probably be several weeks before she is over it, although I have heard of mares keeping it for months. Ginger and bedrest are my best suggestions for now. Make sure she stays well-hydrated as well. There might also be the off-chance of someone knowing an anti-nausea spell in Duskfields, but I’m somewhat doubtful.”

Flamberge nods, "Thanks doc. Crosshair?"

Crosshair nods weakly, trying to beam Flamberge a smile as she tries to climb over his back to rest there for him to carry her away. “Thank you.. Doctor..” she managed out weakly before groaning again.

“You’re quite welcome,” he responded with a small smile, “If you need assistance in getting back to your room, I’d be willing to help.”

Flamberge stands seemingly unencumbered by the small mare on his back.  "I can handle her from here Case. Thank you."

Flamberge heads outside taking Crosshair home to rest.

Max flags Temperance down on the way to whatever things, probably very important things he was attempting to attend to.

“Hey Temperance!”

Temperance pauses in place and looks over to see Max headed his way.  He hadn’t spoken with the griffon much recently, so it was probably something important.  If not, he could use a little distraction from the planning he was about to do.  “Hey, Max.  What’s up?”

“Oh, I just wanted to know how the ball and chain is going.” He grinned. “ And I never did thank say thanks for the apartment either.”

He flashes Max a half-cocked smile.  “She’s doing well, thanks.”  The smile turns genuine as he says, “And you’re welcome about the apartment.  I mean, you helped build like six of them, and we had a few extras.”  He waves a hoof in the direction of the buildings as says, “You did a great job.”

“See? I told you this bird is good on his word." He takes a look around the fort, admiring his handywork. “It seems only like yesterday you came the this humble patch of dirt . . .” The griffon juts out his feathers. “Now I’m just glad you picked the right tool for that job.”

Temperance chuckles and nods.  “Yeah, it does feel like you just crashed through there the other day,” he says, glancing at his office.  “And you certainly didn’t disappoint with the carpentry skills.”  He looks back to Max.  “I’m more than happy to have the extra help around here, that’s for sure.”

“Can’t say it hasn’t been fun! With all the new ponies i’ve met, It’s never been a dull moment round’ here.” Max continues. His expression shifts into something backhanded. “ Even if some of you are too curious for your own good.”

Temperance raises an eyebrow.  “Pardon?”

“Oh, the Red hatted one, broke into my cave awhile ago.” Max replied. “No harm done. But, jumping jasmine gypsies did it give me a scare.”

“He broke into your cave?” Temperance asks.  “Why would he do that?  And why was he out there anyway?”

Max thinks. “well, naw’, actually his wolf broke in, then he came in after.” He shakes his head. “Don’t ask me how his wolf got all the way up there, I’ve been trying to puzzle that out since it happened, It’ll drive you crazy.”

Temperance raises a hoof to his chin.  “Well... I guess Bonnet following you up there makes more sense.  Why though, I have no idea.  At least she didn’t hurt anything.”  He sighs, “Rest assured, I won’t tolerate ponies invading your privacy like that.  On purpose, anyway.”

Max closes his eyes in understanding. “No offence taken. It’s in your nature to be curious;  I get that. Just like it’s mine to jump on every vole I see.” He cocks his head. “ I wouldn't be surprised if he conjures up some stories about my cave . . . odd noises and the like. It’s got a bit a of a ‘cold howl’ rushing through it up there.”

Temperance resists the urge to roll his eyes at the remark about them being too curious.  “Yeah, I suppose it probably does get pretty windy up at those altitudes.”  He smiles and points at the apartment again.  “If it ever gets too chilly up there for you, at least you’ve got a warm place to sleep now, right?”

“Yeah . .  .” Max’s wings fidget a little. “Yeah about that. As fun as being around your fort has been, I may have to say sayonara soon. . .”

Temperance frowns a bit.  “Oh, really?  I’m sorry to hear that.  You’ve been a tremendous help around here.  I understand that you’ve got a life elsewhere though, and if you’ve got obligations elsewhere...”

He shifts around, a little saddened. “Yes, I have a migration I have to keep, and, uh,” Something in his stilted tone made his speech feel disingenuous. “And a family to keep happy as well. Sure you understand.” He closed his eyes solemnly. “Yep. Just less than three weeks. I cannot thank you enough for the hospitality though.”

Temperance nods solemnly.  “You’re welcome, and thank you again for the help you’ve been.  I’d rather not keep you from your family though.”  After a moment, Temperance asks, “Wait... I thought you said you were alone out here?”

Max’s head swerves back. His eyes flick to the left pensively, choosing his next words carefully. “Er . . . Yes, yes I guess I did.” He takes a deep sigh. “I told you I was alone out here. But, in fact . . .” He laughs nervously. “There’s a Mr. Yellowfeather. Sorry ‘bout that. Not exactly something you say when you just shake hooves and claws.”

“Mr. Yellowfeather?” Temperance asks, a bit confused.  “Your father?”

Max gives a listless shrug. “Sure. Let’s go with that.” ‘Thats much easier to explain . . .’ Max thought.  “Yep, just a few more walls, a little more working on the pumps with Smoothblock, A little more corpse burying and I’m done I’m afraid.”

“I see,” Temperance responds, still sounding a bit unhappy.  “Well, if you have to move on, I understand.  But if you want to bring your father around, don’t be a stranger.  You’re always welcome here, and so is he.”

“”I’ll keep that in mind.” Max said with his same old smile. “Here’s to an uneventful next three weeks, huh?”

Temperance makes a nervous chuckle.  “Yes, please.”
