Quickly releasing a caged, injured dwarf (not justice-related)
« on: December 10, 2013, 06:56:57 pm »

I had a dwarf that fell unconscious on top of a cage trap after he was stabbed with a spear.  The normal methods of emptying cages either didn't apply (designating a pasture for an animal) or weren't safe for an already injured dwarf (emptying the cage over a pit).  I used the lever/release method and luckily the dwarf was able to get medical attention in time.  Is there a better way to release an injured dwarf from a cage safely?

You can build the cage and link it to a lever to release the dwarf.   b>j> press x to get a list of all cages and build the one where the dwarfs is.

It might take some time, and make sure the mechanic have no other job (So you dwarf wont starve before being released). But as soon as the lever is hit he will be freed and some one will come to get him to the hospital.

I used the lever/release method...

I'm probably the worst when it comes to not reading posts fully before answering (lots of at-work alt-tabbing), but I do appreciate the desire to help :).

I think you can designate a dwarf-containing cage for a "melt item" job at a smelter. Only if it's a metal cage, of course. I've never had a dwarf in a cage, so can't say if this works, but tame and wild animals as well as goblins will be released from cages this way. Ordering the cage brought to the depot should also work, but if there's no caravan at the depot, that's not exactly a fast release method...

The lever release method is the fastest/safest method i know of. Shotgunning might be faster (especially the dwarf would be _much_ faster :P ), but ridiculously unsafe.

There are people who will suggest building the cage and then [q]uerying it and unassigning the dwarf inside, but I've never successfully done that - is it something that actually works?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Yep, that works. It's my go-to method.

I'm so used to convoluted methods for simple things in DF, I'm always surprised when something that should be simple is in fact simple.  Thanks!

Just got a couple of dwarves accidentally locked into cages (the cages were webbed and the darn dwarves decided to dodge into 'em). Just tried the [q]uery method and the dwarves are still inside. Have now started the link lever and toggle and it looks like that's gonna get 'em out MUCH faster. What kind of job priority does the query and unassign have? That may be why it doesn't work for some people. Seems to be on the order of a cleaning job....
