Ocean Fishing

Can you catch fish in the ocean?  I'm on a shore based fortress and they are fishing inland ponds with no success.  I wonder if the ocean is more replenishable.

No, they went to Hel, where they lead a bleak existence in cold and darkness. Valhalla is reserved for valiant warriors.

You can definitely catch "non unit" fish from the ocean. I don't know if you'll deplete it the same way streams are said to get depleted, though.
By "non unit" fish I mean the kinds you normally catch (salmon, etc), as opposed to creatures showing up in the unit screen as migrating creatures. I don't know if those can be caught by fishing.

Using a fishing zone via (I) on a adjacent land tile to water will allow your dwarves to fish there. Assigned fisherdwarves will go up and fish, then the fish must be prepared via separate jobs this can be done on all bodies of water.

L > S

If you want something more fancy, or your region is subjective to winter seasonal ice freezing, making a artificial bay by channeling out the coastline and separating a body of water so it doesn't freeze on top of covering them in 2x2 rows of grates is a effective way (grates allow all water interactions to take place on top of them, including washing, drinking and fishing while keeping the water inside and safe from the cold) to fish in all weathers.

The non-unit fish you mean are aquatic vermin.  The bigger fish can't be caught by fishing, alas... as much as I love the idea of a dwarf pulling a giant sperm whale onto the shore by his beard.

Here's a related question: if you drain the ocean into an underground cistern, will it produce oceanic vermin fish?

The bigger fish can't be caught by fishing,

Not by REGULAR fishing. However, they CAN be caught by Dwarven Fishing. This is when you drain and dam the ocean, and then harvest the seafloor bounty. Or just flood the ocean across cave traps, and simply slaughter the beasties later.

I do like a fort with the core industry being periodic whaling sessions, where the sea is drained and harvested/cooked before it rots.

The *large serrated steel disk* strikes the Raven in the head, tearing apart the muscle, shattering the skull, and tearing apart the brain!
A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

You can even use magma to cast obsidian walls in the ocean, and thus make it easier to seal off and drain! Dwarven !SCIENCE! At its finest :)

Sometimes whales beach themselves, and a few other fish too.
