Bio: Born in Franconia, the son of a local apothecary and a famous trader, Hieronymus was the only one of his siblings to have no great desire to travel abroad. Certainly, he was fascinated with the various stories and souvenirs his father brought back whenever he returned home, his days filled with playing around with karakuri toys and his nights with dreams of yokai, but to actually visit Jin or Horai? He didn't even have much desire to visit other countries in Avropa. Still, he half heartedly took part in his father's lessons on the language of Horai, escaping when he could to go observe his mother's work. One day, when he snuck into his mother's office unaccompanied, he found his way into the middle of an emergency operation. A man's leg had been caught in a Prydainian harvesting machine, and all the skin had been ripped off. Amsel sat and watched through the whole process, as his mother treated the wound with medicine to prevent infection and to clean the wounds, before bandaging it up. Only then did anyone notice the child in the room. His mother escorted him out and began comforting her son after what she was sure was a horrible sight, but all Amsel could think of was how alike the man's revealed muscles were to the pullies that allowed his karakuri toys to move around.

As Amsel grew to the age where he started receiving serious tutelage in medical studies, his father having accepted the boy had no interest in the family business, he was unable to get the notion of the man's leg and his karakuri dolls out of his head. He'd attempted to create a copy of what he'd seen through disassembling several of his toys, but the quick glimpse he'd had, even if it was burnt into his memories, was simply not enough to properly replicate it. However, his mind settled on a story he only vaugely half remembered being told as a child, that of doctors from Jin, who would cut apart corpses and study their inner workings. With the money he had, he started purchasing cadavers from the families of the recently deceased, cutting them apart and analyzing the pieces. Reports of their child's behavior returned to his parents, who hoped to discourage their son without outright banning his interests. They introduced him to barber surgeons and the frequent results of their work. Amsel analyzed the process, and proceeded to create a list of it's failings to be solved over time, as he continued his research.

When his apothecary studies were completed, his mother took him on as an assistant. Having failed to convince him not to attempt surgery, his parents chose to turn a blind eye to him offering his knife to those who his mother's treatment had been unable to help. To the wonder of all who had heard of the Amsel family boy who cut apart corpses in his free time, his surgeries actually had an incredible survival rate, and even lower rates of infected wounds. Hieronymus had learned how to use the medical treatment his mother used to keep wounds from becoming infected to clean his tools and himself, learning from the mistakes he's observed of the barber surgeons. Further still, he managed to make smaller, more specialized cuts, rather than the haphazard hacking he'd observed. However, even with his success, the discussions regarding the fact that he was cutting apart bodies and cutting into people had reached such a point that his parents saw fit to politely ask him to find a way to use his knowledge without involving knives and cadavers.

Taking the karakuri models he'd made of various body parts Hieronymus took up a business helping with injuries such as strains and skeletal fractures. His family connections helped him find his way to wealthy clients, nobles, knights, and professional performers who catered to the above. It was while working with a ballet company who were visiting from the capital that he met the girl who would change the course of his life, the prima ballerina, Olympia. It didn't take long for the two to hit it off, and he took on an official job with the company in order to stay with her, finally traveling like the rest of his siblings. Their courtship was mostly a formality, time for their parents to negotiate the marriage. Hieronymus's reputation served as a sticking point, but his family name greased the wheels. It didn't take long for the two to marry, his family showering the couple with imported gifts. They had a blissful few months of marriage, until tragedy struck. A deranged fan of his wife's visited their home when he wasn't there, and stabbed her in the heart. He was the first to discover the body.

Olympia's heartbroken parents took their daughter's body and buried it in her hometown, refusing to allow Amsel to be alone with her body, blaming him and his past as a "resurrectionist" for their daughter's death. He returned to his family home, too heartbroken to continue his work. He spent a month languishing in his room, barely eating or sleeping, until finally, in the grips of hunger and sleep deprivation, his mind struck upon wild ideas from his childhood. The stories of ghosts he'd heard from his father and his own experience creating karakuri body parts combined in his mind, giving shape to a mad idea. If the spirits of the dead can appear in Jin and Horai, why couldn't Olympia's soul return in a similar way, and while her body would be unable to continue functioning, even if he could recover it from her parents, he could build her a new one, one which wouldn't die to such a simple wound. With that said, he wouldn't be able to put that plan in motion with just his own knowledge. No, he needed to go to the birthplace of both the stories of ghosts and the karakuri dolls he worked with.

He went to his eldest sister, the one in line to inherit their father's business, and spoke to her about how the whole of Avropa had come to remind him of Olympia, and asked to travel to Horai, like all their other siblings had, with her next trading expedition. He spent the trip reminding himself of the lessons of his youth, about the culture, language, and stories of Horai. The ghosts he'd heard about where called Yurei, and their existence was considered a terrible impurity. Most were bloodthirsty killers, but legends told of a scant few benevolent ones, and Amsel was certain that, if he could contact her soul, his dear Olympia would be one of those few. From their landing in Izumo, Amsel made his way to Hokuto, and made contact with the Mizuno Pharmacy, his family's wealth and his prior knowledge of apothecary work, as well as his... unique surgical knowledge, earned him a place as... technically a student, though one on an accelerated track. He spent his time learning Horai's unique healing methods, and his free time perfecting his Karakuri Doll, and researching Yurei and other yokai.

He was still a student when Mizuno Rin graduated, but given his experience and unique skills, as well as his personal association with her, she was one of the few students who didn't seem wary of the much older foreigner in their class, he was tasked to accompany her. Should he accomplish this, he would be considered to have completed his requirements for graduation. Of course he accepted, the young lady, despite being his "sempai", certainly needed what help she could get, and this would be an excellent field test of his doll. Besides, he imagined that after being cooped up in their room so long, she would want to be able to dance for an audiance again, and he would never dream of refusing her.

"Always live your life to the fullest, my son, because you never know when it may end."

The words of Shinji's mother echoed in his mind from as long as he can remember. His parents, Satoru and Kurumi, ran a business conducting the affairs of the recently deceased on the outskirts of Seito's capital, Kamogawa. It was there that the boy learned to respect the value of death. He quickly learned the methods of facilitating funeral rites, and the ins and outs of preparing a body for burial. His father would also bring him on missions to calm spirits, employing techniques borrowed from neighboring Jin. Young Shinji also demonstrated remarkable proficiency with both the lance and elemental magic, used as a last resort for quieting particularly restless spirits. But through all of that, he felt there was something missing from his life.

It wasn't until Shinji turned 18 that the message finally sank in. While returning home one night, he spotted a group of bandits ransacking a grave for valuables. This caused the young man to be overcome with an unusually rare bout of anger, as he believed disrespecting the dead to be an absolutely unforgivable sin. Rather foolishly, he challenged the group. His skill with quieting restless spirits proved to be useful here. Unfortunately, the injuries he suffered in the fight were grievous, and the black cat collapsed, surrounded by bandit corpses.

Then, Shinji awoke to a large man with an eyepatch standing directly over him. The giant wall of a warrior introduced himself as Todoroki Guren, the leader of a mercenary company. Shinji learned from Todoroki that he had nearly died fighting the bandits and would have had he not been found, and that his mercenaries had been originally tasked with hunting down said group before the teenager got to them. The fighting prowess the Shinji demonstrated inspired the older man, and he offered him the chance to repurpose his skills as a mercenary. Kurokawa Shinji's life nearly ended that night. He could have gone and died without ever experiencing the sights to be seen in the rest of the Five Kingdoms. And so, the young man set off with his parents' approval, as a way to experience the Five Kingdoms for himself and as thanks towards the man who saved his life.

To a not-insignificant number of his fellow mercenaries in the Thousand Swords, the impression given off by Shinji could be described as "creepy" or "strange". For some, it's his long black hair, pale complexion, and piercing green eyes that make him resemble a spirit himself. For others, it could his tendency to go completely unnoticed until he announces his presence. It could even be his unusual interest toward the supernatural and his behavior, seen by many as eccentric and overly causal, especially regarding the subject of death. However, there is one thing that anyone who's ever seen him in action can agree on: he takes any duty thrust upon him with the utmost seriousness. Whether it be handling the last rites of a fallen comrade, or a bodyguard job for some big-shot, Kurokawa Shinji puts all of his effort into whatever is thrown his way, even if his demeanor may not always reflect that.

Bio: A peculiar figure from Amatsu, with very clear interest towards arts, especially the sorts connected to theatrical plays and a self-proclaimed star. Needless to say, it is difficult for someone to stand out so easily in a large kingdom such as Amatsu, or to achieve his other interests besides being in the spotlight; which led to Kyoko's attempts to roam and perform in different towns scattered across the region. Whether performing by himself or with a proper cast, all in hopes of making his name stand out a bit more-An effort that also worked against his OTHER interest; to become a Nine-Tailed Fox. After all, if he was spending his time wandering only performing, that was time he wasn't spending improving his magic and chasing more power! A difficult spot that made Kyoko take a much more different and possibly risky decision; to move out of Amatsu. After hearing rumors about magic artifacts and vials being produced at Mount Kaikuma, Kyoko was willing to take that risk; after all if there was something that COULD make him improve his magic faster, it was worth his time, along with the possibility of practicing his magic during the travel itself.

Finding the opportunity to travel safely along another group to his new destination however, was something that required a tiny bit of dedication, smooth talking and dramatic performance. Keeping his selfish objectives to himself, he claimed to be interested in both performing in a new territory and learning more about healing magic and the preparation of medical goods. With a kitsune mask covering his 'too perfect to be seen' face and a pair of dancing fans under his sleeves for theatrical (and sometimes magical) reasons, this was also seen as the perfect opportunity to make that 'identity' of his stand out further-Or at the very least in his far from humble opinion, after all what better way to gain recognition than gaining the approval of some possibly important caravan folks?
