Preserving fortress artifacts for adventure mode
« on: February 12, 2025, 02:26:04 pm »

I have a mature fort with many artifacts, some of which are quite useable (I think). The fort has grown large enough that it is just running too slowly so I thought I'd retire it and adventure to it.

What is the best way to preserve artifacts so that I can go back and get them with my adventurer after retirement? They are currently behind a locked door. I was thinking maybe I should put them behind a drawbridge attached to a switch?

Also, these are the artifacts I've generated, would any of them be that good or not really worth it?

giant mole bone buckler > Nitem Mezum > $10,200
water buffalo bone pick > Noramgongith Lertethzar > $23,500
pig tail left glove > Thetustosust Vumshar Iden > $10,150
sleek voracious cave crawler leather right glove > Ritaslular > $9,500
Pig tail hood > Desiszuglar > $7,850
Steel Crossbow > Nilesgeshud > $13,100
willo bow > Ledamid > $10,300

I also have a bunch of artifact rings, bracelets, crowns, etc.

I have played a LOT of fortress mode but have never played adventure mode

Being behind a locked door or any thing else isn't going to protect them. The layout of a site only matters for access to items when it is loaded in either mode. During the world simulation when starting either game mode, or when running a game mode some where else in the world, the artifacts would be accessible to any one even if they were in a room sealed in cast obsidian and surrounded by magma.

Another thing to consider is that artifacts will not usually stay at the same location within a site, teleporting around on subsequent reloads of a site. Having them placed on a pedestal should stop that.

While there's always the prestige of wearing them, none of those are good for combat. Except may be the buckler with high skill (shields get twice the chance to block but skill is more important). You could may be use the crossbow as a blunt weapon, but ranged attacks are currently not very good for player characters (you get one shot off and then are stuck "reloading" while your opponents can get multiple attacks in). Also the good metal ammo is rather heavy.
