In Italy, the golden rule for cooking pasta is 1, 10, 100 or 1 liter of water, 10 grams of salt for every 100 grams of pasta. Converted for American cooks, the rule should be 1/3, 3, 30, referring to 1/3 oz of salt, 3 oz of pasta and 30 oz of water.

A highschool degree is well worth having! I'd encourage you to stick with it, if you're able.

Military service is a real gamble. I have an aunt who was able to turn her life around by working in the military; it can provide some meaningful structure if you're totally out of options. Once you sign that service contract though, the government owns you - body and soul. You could wind up out there risking your life for a cause you don't believe in, or worse.

If you don't have any particular career plan in mind, vocational school is a solid option for you once you graduate highschool. A lot of places have free (!) programs that prepare you for a specific career; JobCorps is the big one in the US. You won't be the wealthiest guy around doing something like plumbing or electrician's work, but you'd have significantly better prospects than in fast foo!

If you are considering the military, spend time talking with recruiters at their offices. Take some aptitude tests and find out what they think you would be good at, and find out what pathways you can get into. Better pathways lead to better training, better training is also more useful outside of the military. If you are not pushing to get the better training, someone else who is pushing will get the training, and you will get something lesser.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
