Dead Island... great?

I played it single player and probably bought it on sale relatively long after release, so the on-release problems aren't something I would know about it. I did indeed think it was great at the time, though I didn't compare it to much except the Left 4 Dead series. I played both as Sam B, who is the man. I got pretty good at bunny hopping around, especially in the standalone expansion where the cooldown was a little shorter. In the first one, the main bug I saw was the Magic Wand club weapon mod was overpowered and sent zombies flying, even the big ones. The guns also showed up late in that one for some reason, but Sam B needed no guns. The second one had nailguns but it was difficult to keep it at level. You could draw stuff on the zombies with it once it was outleveled though...

There is a pretty big sale on Steam, lots of games from a few years ago for a discount.

Also I happened to notice this was going to Early Access soon:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/3105440/Heroes_of_Might__Magic_Olden_Era/

Spoiler: Jadame (click to show/hide)

Sweet! It's going back to Enroth. I only had the games up to IV so that's all I know about it. Basically the IP changed hands and the backstory was that after the events of Heroes III: Armageddon the world blew up and some magic portals opened up to a new setting. I liked IV as well but I liked Enroth more than the new one. The campaigns in IV were good though:

What world is the new game set on? I haven't played any Heroes games past number 4. That's the one with Gauldoth Half-Dead, coolest protagonist in that game.

It's set on the Jadame continent as well. Might and Magic 8 was my favorite of the series. That was set on Jadame. Grinding to level 5 on Regnan Pirates to make it through the first dungeon to get off that island. After that running those silly fruit around to make alcohol to sell and later buying all the junk to use the Fire Grandmaster enchant spell on for +10,000 value.  I'm wondering if it's going to use that as a reference. The continent was unusual because it was mostly populated by bad guys from the previous games. It had towns for Dark Elves, Necromancers, Trolls, Dragon Hunters from another continent, a big cave full of dragons, a dungeon with Dark Dwarves, a Minotaur city, probably some others I'm forgetting. The hero party could have trolls, knight or dragon hunter, dark elves for skills, clerics, necromancer and dragons which were kind of op until the necro was casting shrapnel or something.

EDIT: I heard on the NPR there is some kind of one day boycott social media that I don't use has put together. I think it's US but I don't know anything about it. The goal is to not purchase anything today. I guess I'll wait a day and see if the sale is still on.

It runs to the 9th. There are lots of stuff about to hit Early Access too. Also this one is free:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2516940/The_August_Before_Chapter_One/

There are plenty of demos there, here's one I pulled out of the list of 17 (I haven't tried it yet)

Enter the Gungeon is currently 90% off - $1.49.
Steam tells me that I put 101 hours into it.

I'm currently looking at:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/597180/Old_World/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2807150/Worshippers_of_Cthulhu/

Will probably buy both.

EDIT: And now I did. Although I only picked up the base game Old World, oh god oh god they're following the Paradox DLC strategy.  Maybe I'll figure out if I like the base game before shelling out the money for the DLCs...

I'm in a similar boat with Age of Wonders 4, it looks interesting and I remember the older games fondly but fuck me if that dumpster load of DLC isn't driving me up the wall. Because I know I'll want the options it offers and I know I'll be annoyed by seeing "Oh this mechanic is barebones/garbage but you can make it fun if you get this DLC" prompts in game. But I also know, just like with other PDX titles I'll probably move on to another game before I touch 90% of the stuff added by the DLC.

I very much disagree about Old World - the dlcs are limited and sensible. There are two that are nice to have once you're sure you like the game enough to be playing it for a while: the 'sacred and profane'and the 'behind the throne' ones, as they expand the game mechanically a bit and flesh out the events. The rest are entirely optional (a new civ here, a few new wonders there, a scenario pack) and more of a supporter's pack.

The game is the best 4x I've ever played, hands down.
But you have to accept the limitations it imposes: you can't settle a city anywhere, the map has edges, you never get past the antiquity.
What's there, though, is stellar. The orders system by itself is brilliant, as each turn there's always more that needs to be done than you can handle, and you have to prioritise all the time while taking risks trying to make your dynasty more famous (to expand the orders pool).
The AI is ruthless in combat and sensible in diplomacy. You have to accept you'll be losing troops, and can't win a war with one levelled up warrior and an archer.
There's also plenty of little annoyances from other 4x games that got solved with simple design choices - like having an undo button, or wonders being locked down upon starting construction (no more building the pyramids for 20 turns only for them to be cancelled because the Zulus got there first).
And it all oozes personality thanks to the limited scope and the ck style characters and events.
You generally get the sense that the game was thoughtfully designed by people who understand the genre, instead of just slapping a reskin on Civilisation with one or two arbitrary changes to the mechanics.

I went through a massive Civ4 kick recently and this all makes Old World sound very tempting.

As it happens, the Civ4 complete version with all the expansions is 80% off on Steam (just £2.99 where I am).

I played through a few games until I got an overwhelming culture victory. I was playing France on the 18 nation scenario set on a big Earth map. It took so long though I'm probably sated on the 4X thing for another few years.

The great thing about Civ4 is that it has some of the best total conversion mods out there. The Dune one, or the fantasy-themed Fall from Heaven (or its offshoots), play as pretty much completely different games.

Captain of Industry is 20% off on Steam.
Just bought it a week ago (at full price haha) and have been pleasantly surprised.
Desfinitly a good factory / settlement builder with enough complexity to keep you busy for a long time.
While map size is not infinite like Factorio, the maps are HUGE, and terraforming to make more space is a big part of the game.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Huge map is huge.
