Title: Ignorant Fortress Part 2: Minefield (Still accepting New Overseers!)
Post by: highmax28 on August 19, 2013, 09:47:24 pm
So I got this really stupid idea (and in DF, nothing is truly a stupid idea unless its already been done, so its "dwarfy" for now) and I came up with a really fun and hilarious way to start a succession fort:

RULES:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

What gave me the idea for this? I'll explain:

Imagine what it is like to have no real communication between dwarves? They're always working (if your fortress is running properly), eating or drinking, and you can't have a conversation with a mug of ale going down your throat or a mouth full of plump helmet. And many people who role play succession forts always say they talked with the other overseer before passing it on to them. But in DF, is this the case?

So I decided to start what I would like to call: Ignorant Fortress. The succession fort that you have no idea what is going to happen when you take it over.

Current madme- I mean, players:

green means turn finished
teal means currently their turn
yellow means awaiting the save file or awaiting a response from them
orange means awaiting their turn
red means turn skipped
purple means I have no idea what to call that...

Journal of Highmax: Founder of Mineforest
Edit:
(Hit post instead of preview when I started this >_<)
I'm finally here. I set out with my friend Ustuth and his friends and his friend's friends to this place far, far south and I know I can win that bet. Hold an establishment until year 20? I can last that long as long as we can get regular supply lines from the mountain-homes, I told him. He told me even if I don't live to see it, the fortress would gain substantial amounts of wealth and fame if we did so. So, we're here. I'm a simple mason and an engraver, but I know that with hard work comes sustenance.

We agreed to have Cilob Lazdeduk as the expedition leader. After all, who is best in the wilds then one who knows the wild's inhabitants? Only Sibrek, the cook and the brewer, and Cilob's own friend, was unsure of this. Then again, she hates people of authority to begin with.

Cilob got my just unpacking things mostly. The snow is starting to melt, but the iced over water still remains. I really hope no one falls in. Hopefully we can get some things done before snow comes again. Hopefully, that will be months away, but I am unsure in this area. I am not familiar with the surroundings, only that the location is perfect for a fortress to take hold.

Sounds pretty cool. I am going on vacation very soon, but will be back on Monday, exactly a week from today. May I have the first (second I suppose) turn? I will try my best not to doom the fortress, to make it a shining light for all dwarfkind!

And, if I may make a suggestion, we could make a massive hidden corpse stockpile, that allows only goblin and megabeast corpses, so that the next overseer could "discover" the remains of fallen enemies, and thus gain some understanding of the current level of threat.

Also, I'm assuming that your not allowed to leave notes?

Hmmm... I just did some quick math, and at the speed my computer runs df, I could play to the 20 year goal in my single week if I played 12 hours a day...

LETS DO THIS!

(I like that. I also forgot to add a part of the rule that we leave sundays for file transferring. regardless...)

Cilob ordered me to build a trade depot today, although we're not expecting anyone anytime soon. He pointed me towards a large opening and I built it there. Then he ordered me to MOVE everything we had INTO the hole. And we just had it in a nice pile outside!

I just got word from Cilob that I am to make a mason's workshop and with it, many objects needed to sustain our outpost and make it a home. I was also assigned in some smoothing duty at the same time. Other then that, a lot of dumping and moving the stockpile orders that I'm too busy to do.

A group of migrants apparently arrived. I saw a few new faces as they came by and started clearing the rocks around my work area. Hopefully my smoothed walls and floors will look better without all this clutter. Also I'm watching as some of the workers place beds nearby and doors. Cilob said that I now have a bedroom, which is wonderful, cause now I can stop sleeping on this smoothed floor (as soft as if is, its still not comfy to sleep on). I still got that order to do at the mason's workshop, but that can happen after I'm finished up with the smoothing.

We ran out of booze today, I found this out when I went to go get something to drink and I couldn't find any. Cilob explains that everything will be alright in a couple of hours. Well, I don't have hours for my break, I just want some booze!

*sigh* I guess its back to smoothing stone for me then... I hope I can finish this up soon and work on that order, Cilob said it was kind of urgent...
Title: Re: Mineforest: A twist in succession fortresses!

Some more migrants have arrived. I finally finished that order. I decided to take a break from smoothing and complete that. My work area is clean of clutter and my smoothing job can be done a lot quicker. But after this, Cilob said there is more smoothing jobs for me to do... What a bother. We also slaughtered our horse, we really needed the meat. Also, booze is back on the menu thankfully, now I don't have to run all the way to the icy cold river where I'm getting chased by badgers as everyone else is.

Edit:
Water just froze over and badgers are chasing migrants... Into our outpost... Yay?

Had to wall off some way leading to the outside. It had lots of frozen water and there was mud everywhere. The mud also smelled horrible, but it must've been from the water. I also did some more smoothing (wow this is taking a long time) and I also heard our sheep getting harassed by some badgers, but they left them alone thankfully.

Also, a caravan has arrived. Hopefully, the king didn't cheap out on me with this...

A ranger by the name of Rakust made an artifact toy larch axe. Its pretty amusing how its got an image of itself on itself. I also got two new workers to help me smooth off this area and the next area. Hopefully, we'll be done quickly; I still got another order to do!

I heard that the traders had left; I mostly figured that out when I saw the empty depot. I also finally finished that first smoothing job, now its off to the next... Wait, I got HOW MANY smoothing jobs waiting for me!? 6!? Oh boy... This is going to get messy... at least they told me its all cleaned out for me.

After I finished that second room with the two new guys, I went to walk out and Cilob just pointed back at the room and said "you're not done, start engraving images". I finally got to do some creativity. I made one really good one, and the other two did ok on their detailing jobs. A child also created a bone spear with the image of cut gems and a certain dwarf that I can't remember why he was remembered. Regardless, I started working on that order again and the order forms seemed to be piled up, especially with the migrants that came in. More people means more jobs are needed, so hopefully those two will deal with the last five smoothing jobs as I dig through the forms and see whats needed.

An elven caravan has arrived, and I work seems to be good from what I see, but I hear that more jobs are needed in order to keep the outpost running smoothly. I have heard that now that there a few stockpile changes, but I'm still busy with the smoothing that I can't take part of it. A lot of people are complaining about not having plump helmet spawn because we're not going through as much plump helmets as they are pulling out of the ground, so they sit there and shout out to everyone over and over that there are no more plump helmet spawn. I say just do your job without alerting to the world that you're missing something to finish your task.

Elven caravan left, I heard their gear was useless though, so we kinda lost out on that trade. I hope that when the next caravan arrives, we get some longland beer, I heard that was some good stuff, but they didn't have it this time around.

A perfect indigo tourmaline (artifact) was made today, it looks pretty menacing with its spikes. Also, three smoothing jobs are finished thus far, and another wave of migrants have arrived. So far, nothing really exciting happening as far as I can tell.

A human trade caravan has arrived, and also I was told to build bridges, but I don't know what for. All I know is when I finished one, an angry dwarf came across from the other side and yelled at me before leaving to go talk to Cilob. Oh boy, do I pity him right now. On the bright side, I finished smoothing another room,  so that's four area jobs down.

Caravan left and I'm just finishing up on one last bit of smoothing... And then Cilob comes around and says to engrave another few areas. Wonderful...

I did not finish reading the rules yet, nor I managed to Figure out exactly how the time limit works. Is it like that one fortress where you have infinite ingame time and 24h limitation? Either way please sign me up for a turn.

EDIT: Ok i read the rules and i think i understand them. One more thing that is not included, You said communication outside the game is forbidden but what about Notes? Most people say that there is a note scribbled in place where Dwarves can see it and with reading skill implemented it makes sense. So can we use Notes, Use them only if our dwarf has at least dabbling Reader skill or never at all?

OOC:
If your dwarf has reading skill, you can place notes down, I'll allow it. And I'll write down players who are requesting turns, and its not a 24h limit since some of us have things to do outside of DF, so we get a bit of a break from time to time.
***

The king's caravan came by and scoffed at the broker apparently for believing also that we can last till year 20. Lucky for them, I was smoothing more stone at the time, or I would've given him a piece of my mind. As for smoothing jobs, we're doing quite well, and when I engrave, it's almost always a masterpiece. Cilob has been asking me about moving my room somewhere else, and I said it was fine as long as I have somewhere to sleep. He told me then he's got several projects that will start to take place now, hopefully meaning we can get some serious work going.

Water froze today and snow is starting to litter the ground. I'm currently working on another smoothing job since all the engraving is finally completed. Another round of dumping was ordered, but I once again, ignored it. I also took the liberty of finishing up another order, and I also love the new room I just got handed to me. Cilob claims I may have another job in the future, but he's not 100% certain yet.

Wonderful! I was just on my way to do an outdoor project when a goblin snatcher comes by and stabs me! Now I got a nice bruised muscle! God this hurts... Also, a bear came by and most of our dogs scared it away. I'm not sure if anyone was hurt or not. And more smoothing projects with engravings

Cilob came to me and told me that we're getting a change in management. I asked who it was, and he told me that we now have a mayor and I missed the election. The mayor is named Olon, and he will now be giving me orders... Once I'm done with this huge project Cilob had me start. I really don't know what its for, but I hope the effort is worth it, we're really getting tired simply getting up to this thing.

Also, an artifact figurine of a giant was made today, its pretty good looking. More jobs have been laid out but nothing massive yet. Maybe Cilob didn't have time to figure out what his plans were before the mayor took over? Oh well. Olon came up to me after I pondered this and said in the near future, I will be going back to smoothing duty.

We just finished up our big project, and in the process, I got kicked by a deer... Wonderful...

Looks like a good start so far. Just a tip: It keeps it less cluttered if you just keep editing updates into the original "journal of Highmax" post.

Strange tidings today. We gained a squad of military dwarves and ended up loosing quite a few sheep to a raging black bear. And more orders although these are a lot different then when Cilob was in charge. Now I see him everytime I go to the workshop, he is the mechanic after all. I'm doing more smoothing jobs and there is a few other jobs that require my attention, but nothing too serious. More dumping jobs among those, but this time, I should be able to give a hand. I also hear a lot of cawing when I drop some of this stuff off. Do we have a bird problem? I can't tell. Also, theres a weird smell there as well, but I can't tell what exactly it is... Its not like its horrible, but its weird. Also, an artifact bucket of silver was made, and it has the tale of how the original seven of us came here in the year 6. Its quite beautiful really, once you get over the fact the bucket has spikes.

EDIT:

I also got word that our soldiers are now armed with copper. This is a start, especially since our army is getting armed quickly.

EDIT2:
Something just happened and a large portion of the people are chosen by Olon to run outside to do something. Several are armed but not all. Many look like they've never even seen combat before. Are we under attack? I asked Olon as he passed me by and he told me that if anything happens, I will take over as mayor. Even olon had a sword in hand. I'm terrified about what will happen.

EDIT3:
The people came back in one piece, and everyone put their gear they took and put it away somewhere. I'm simply trying to figure out how to place this wall but something is in the way... And a lot of people are complaining about ravens, although I'm not too sure why...

EDITOMFGWTF!?!?!?:
Olon told us about something we had to go outside to grab, and then I watched as people got slaughtered before my eyes. I was lucky and only took a shot to my ribs and still lived. Although it really hurts, I think he hurt one of my organs... I don't know the casualties, but I'm definatley NOT grabbing the stuff that they told me to grab. I think Olon wants me to start a new order right away. I wonder what we're making.

EDITHOLYHELLWHATISTHAT!?!?!?!:
Horrible purple clouds that smell horrible fill our halls. What on earth is this smell!? Why is it in our outpost? And why does it smell so badly!? And how are the elves perfectly fine from this cloud!? Why is everything horrible happening when I just found a new romance with the manager!? *scribbles in anger and bent pages from throwing the journal across the room are present*

((Nother update, I'm probably going to hut it off soon. I've been on this one fortress for a good amount of time and there really isn't much I can do without ruining the !!FUN!! for the next person))

Got told to start another project outside. At least that foul smell is gone, but now I'm hearing howling in our halls. What's going on up here anyway? And I also can't seem to get this damn wall right. I keep finding someone standing on top of the building site. Wait a minute....

Ok, after some rethinking, I changed the way the project looks, but it won't have the issue of people getting in the way (thank armok!) Also, I was told to do a lot more engraving jobs. But nothing really important happened.

Another project was made today, right overtop of another. It appears strange though, but I doubt it should be any problem. I was also told to do some smoothing jobs and then come to the mayor's office. I hope I'm not in trouble for those engravings I put up...

Smoothing jobs are done, the project is almost at a standstill, so I decided to go meet with the mayor. I walked in and he instantly took my hand and shook it with a large grin on his face. "Thank you for coming Highmax. We have quite some important business to discuss." I stood overtop Olon's desk and he thanked me for fnishing up on the engraving. I told him it was quick and looked amazing as long as it was me doing so, after all, I'm the best engraver in the whole place. He laughed a little on that. "And that my boy, is why Cilob left me a note telling me you should be ascended to nobility." I was shocked. Me? A simple mason and engraver a Noble? "What did you have in mind sir? Captain of the Guard? Hammerer? Bookeeper?" Olon shook his head and smiled. "No, I left with the outpost liason your recommendation from Cilob that you are to be given the title of Baron. That puts you as high as me, maybe even higher.". Olon laughed heartily again and I stood there shocked. "Baron?" Olon nodded his head. "I hope you can help us bring a new era to the new Barony of Mineforest. Good luck, and don't forget you're still obligated to your old duties, but you have some surprises waiting for you in your room."

I walked down the hall and saw my room and entered. In it was a note and a document containing the liason's permission to make this place a barony and me as the baron. I noticed some new furniture and the note said I had a new office not far from here. I was also told that I now have a tomb in case I die, and that I also am now obligated to almost anything I desire, but I preferred the comfort of my engravings and my masonry. Speaking of which, I have more work to do.

We don't know what happened, but they came out of nowhere. Goblins came and just slaughtered a good portion of our people, along with our animals. We captured many of them, but lost our entire army to them. We were lucky that many were inside when they all arrived, but then people ran outside to wathc the carnage.... And then we were taking heavy losses in our numbers. The snow turned red when we watched as many were cut down.  And so many children died also. Only a few made it to live, but with heavy wounds. We lost at least half of our nobility, mostly our bookkeeper/manager/broker and our chief medical dwarf. Olon and myself are trying to are trying to bring more people into our army, but with little avail: all we had were workers and farmers, not many were trained in military and those who were are now in the hospital, possibly unable to ever recover.

Let it be known that the 21st of Obsidian is that day that we all mourn for the losses of many.

((I was gonna passi t off but then this happens. I have no idea what went wrong, but people got stupid and shit happens. I'm able to retell more because of the baron status (which I will now treat equally as mayor) but I will also maintain some level of discretion still. Regardless of that, most of our dwarves DID die and a lot of our nobles died and almost all of our dogs died, so It's not really breaking many rules.))

"Ignorant". That is why I avoid reading your updates, to be so close to that ideal migrant ignorance as possible. After all that's how I attempted Shakecloistered and I still survived it^^. Cannot wait to see how the fort will look like when I get my hands on it^^.

Hey, Highmax. I think it's time for Apiks to return! Fetch me on the list if you could, please? You can bet your little head that this'll be a success with me around  ;D.

Edit: After poking around in the rules a bit, does this mean that I can dwarf people if they request so?

Edit2: I suppose we are not allowed to post screenshots?

You CAN dwarf people if they want, but anyone who is having a turn cannot until their turn.

And I didn't because I didn't want to. But you can, provided that they show something "important"

The Journal of ShadowHammer
Today was my first day at Mineforest. I was given quite a scare as I walked in the front gate and was greeted by a black bear. However, instead of mauling me, it just licked my hand and walked back to its pen. I saw many of these usually wild animals in cages around the fortress as I was walking through. It is disturbing to think that they might one day forget their training and once again become vicious dwarf eaters.
Not knowing much about the fortress, I decided to follow the main group of other dwarves to see what was happening. To my horror, I discovered that they were piling dead bodies! I immediately ran to the mason’s workshop and demanded that he put whatever he was doing on hold to make some rock coffins for the fallen.
Due to the obviously deadly nature of this fortress, I have immediately set about making a tomb for myself. It shall be an amazing monument, filled with gold and exotic animals to guard me for eternity.
I have been having a difficult time choosing what career I want, whether to be a soldier or a civil worker. Then I decided that as a miner, I could be both!
Today, I heard a thunder of footsteps on the surface. Whatever made the noise must have been giant! The soldiers, mostly they seemed to be marksdwarves, ran to the entrance. There was lots of shouting, but all the soldiers came back unharmed. I exempted myself from this battle, not having had much experience with my pickaxe yet.
I have designated a huge area for mining so that I can get used to my pick. I think that I am already more than adequately skilled with it.
To guard my tomb, I have begun to breed both wolves and leopards. The leopards seemed very well trained, but one of the wolves snapped at me, so it might not be quite tame yet.
I happened to walk by the mechanics workshop today, and I saw a mechanism of stunning quality. It was made of kaolinite, and it gave me an amazing idea. It, together with a bone spear worthy of legend, shall guard my tomb, along with my war leopards and wolves.
Now that I have my death covered, I am now thinking of ways to keep myself alive. I have become quite skilled with my pick, but I cannot fight off an entire siege by myself, and our army is currently sorely lacking. I looked at our fort's gates, and all we can do right now to defend ourselves without fighting is raise a bridge, and sit tight. I have decided to make a long, snaky corridor, mined out by yours truly, and then build ballistae to fire through it. The enemy with have to march through a hail of massive arrows to reach the fortress.

Might be a bit much info on there, but hey, SURPRISE! Lotsa wolves and bears! :P

No, unfortunately, no war black bears. Or war wolves.

The Dwarven caravan came by today, and clearly trading was a success, because I got a new steel mail shirt and leggings. This armor is pretty awkward to wear, but hopefully I will learn how to better use it soon.
The blacksmith came and yelled at me because apparently us miners aren’t producing enough tetrahedrite ore. The production of copper goods had to be put on hold because of our “incompetence”.
Another perfect gem was created! This one is a chrysobel. Perhaps we will end up like Feanor with his three silmarils.
To learn other aspects of combat, now that I know how to wield a pick, I have decided to organize combat training sessions a few times a year. This will help all the miners in the fort to learn how to better defend themselves.
I killed my first goblin today. I was summoned, along with the other soldiers, to the fortress entrance. Two archers and a swordsman had managed to penetrate the outer defenses, and we had to stop them. I was first in to battle, bravely swinging my pick into the swordsman’s head, killing him with one stroke. I then engaged the first archer, rapidly exchanging blows. Then, from behind him, the other greenskin fired, right into my leg. I fell over, but from the ground I still managed to slash my enemy’s heel, crippling him. They were both quickly slain by the rest of my squad. I then drifted in and out of consciousness, barely able to move because of my leg. Now I am resting in my bed, and the fortress is safe.

I think I just shed a tear of joy from this... But remember: the silmarils were sought out by Morgoth, and that can't be good for us...  And also, you ready to toss up the save? DFFD doesn't work for me, that's why I used mediafire. You got till sunday to pack it up and toss it to whoevers next... Who I can't remember who it was (sorry!)

Speaking of surprise I have made some moddifications that may be to your liking, also our game is no longer 100% Vanila flavoured^^, if you would rather i reverse it say so quickly before it becomes impossible^^.

If next wave has animal trainer he is mine just to keep it in Role, kind of.

Okay then! It's time to make some big changes around here! I'll download the save and upload it by Sunday as per the rules say! As I said earlier, I'm pulling an apiks. That means that I'll be making no updates whatsoever. Also no modding since I suck at that :P. BFEL, it wouldn't be a bad idea to update your list as well. Well then. Wish me luck!

I'll start later today or tomorrow since I have to set up my new PC.

The problem was that I hadn't played Dwarf Fortress in a while so I had to get in tune with everything. In the end I got in line but by the time I did, everything had already calmed down. I wasted massive amounts of manpower for nothing. Oh well. Atleast we don't have to worry about external forces.

I'll download save tomorrow to take a look what have changed. Also It is not a spoiler to say my dwarf commited suicide after... you know what. Just nothing left to live for.

Also did you do anything with our trained ravens?
Title: Re: Mineforest: A twist in succession fortresses!
Post by: apiks on September 14, 2013, 06:23:27 pm
I literaly had no idea what had happened before except that we were in a terrible pinch. As for the ravens, I butchered one small one and didn't touch the rest as I am not proficient in using animals that much.

EDIT: You might even say that I did nothing, considering what I actually did in a few months flat. It was a disastrous waste of time if you ask me.

I'm definatley using apiks now as a word for not saying anything at all. Watch it become a meme or something on bay12... Maybe it will happen on necrothreat where we come up with something like that :P As for turns, we got no one left to take over, so exodius, you're free to take over, cause I think we might just go in rotation until we get bored or everyone stops playing. I can't take it because parent issues makes me only able to do this during the weekends, and secretly during breaks in between classes

Hah, good choice. After you reach the 6th book though, it gets a bit too dragged out. Survive until book 9 or so from what I hear, and you're good. Also prepare to rage at how the book portrays women, I sure as hell did.

As for the fort, we got a deal. highmax on the weekdays from whatever he can snatch and if he's cool with it, me on the weekends.

I know how you feel. I'm very restrained myself, with work, college, Dungeons & Dragons, writing, reading wheel of time, insane mother... It just gets crazy. I haven't really touched the save, but I'm eager to see the epicness of it. I'm thinking of changing the rules that you only pull off an apiks when its your turn, so no updates (which would create a very dead thread in terms of figuring it out).

Yes! I disagree with you on that capitalization! I originally conceived my name with the lowercase letter 'a' so it wouldn't do me good if it was capitalized. Of course, you can do anything you want but I'm just saying how it was originally thought of. If anybody starts wondering how you add the -ing form, then know that there is no such word since it's not a verb, but rather a noun. The phrase is "To pull an apiks".

As for your Tunnel of Love, I believe I've expanded it a lot and made it very much so defensible as well as add some shortcuts that can be barred using a wall.

Is this a joke? Another siege? Goodness me! I spent 6 months flat making defenses in such a case! Anyways, Wafflelordling, I had the same problem. I was also used to the Phoebus tileset and hadn't played DF in a good few months. I did manage to recall most stuff though.

As for who plays now, I think it's fair to let Sindain have his turn since he requested one. You are allowed to use either my save or Wafflelordling's save. Your choice.

Next time I try I'll do something worse  :P also I'll survive next time dammit.

To what extent are we allowed to mess with the raws?
In terms of making things more !!FUN!! of course, and for !!SCIENCE!!

Fixed that for you^^

Why thank you, I hadn't edited the raws yet but wanted to know ahead of my next term in insanity, maybe I'll make it so that whoever goes after actually uses my save..... now if only I could write with the voice of Terry.

I don't think updates are possible with current rules... unless you want journal scraps from kamikaze waves. I could take one existing dwarf and give him amnesia so I have a blank slate.

But I won't lie to you, the fortress is in a sad state and, aside from having few interesting ideas, one of the most messy I've ever seen.

Journal of Bokaza, entry 1:

When I woke up I found myself in a act of being cut open by some ugly fella. I screamed punched him and some more fellas came in and started looking at me strangely. When I asked where I was they said I was in the hospital and have been here for months now, sleeping. I didn't take long for the pain to kick in. It seems I've been hurt in some accident no one seems to recall, I broke my right arm, left leg and hit my head. Due to something this surgeon fella keeps calling "anesia", he has ordered me to write a journal in hopes of returning some of my memories. Not that it'll help me since I can't even recall my own name.
When he heard I didn't know my name he laughed and said I was Bokaza. When I asked what that meant he laughed again and just said "Ohh, nothing". Good for nothing doctors.

Journal of Bokaza, entry 2:

After being hungry and thirsty for weeks and constant screaming of the fella in the room next to mine, someone finally fed me. When I asked what took them so long and where in the Armok's name the doctor is, she told me the doctor was "having a break", that every one else was busy and that I'll be joining them as a miner as soon as the doctor brings me a crutch. When I asked how exactly I'm suppose to mine with a crutch, she just shrugged and said it's not her problem. Good for nothing doctors.

Later, when someone else came to feed the poor fella in the next room, I caught a glimpse of him. He was tied to some hellish torture table with chains, with some strange bird standing beside him striking a menacing pose and was screaming they let him go. What terrible crimes he did to deserve it and why it's in the hospital in the first place is beyond me.

P.S. It was a turkey. Got to remember that.

Journal of Bokaza, entry 3:

These past few months have been very strange. After getting my crutch and being released from the hospital on date 24th of Obsidian, year 15, I' was immediately ordered by Catten Usenasmel, the mayor, to start working on the main dig. After I looked blankly at her, she pointed me through the barracks, a sad excuse for one since there wasn't a dorf in it, and through a small tunnel. There it was, a huge pillar of stone, hundred feet wide and so long I couldn't even see its other end, surrounded by a huge dorf-made cavern. There was a small hole on the side of it where dorfs kept coming in and out. When I asked a fella nearby what it was we were working on he said it was "th' solution to all 'ur problems". I replied by asking what these problems were he just told me "we aren't allowed to talk 'bout it". Also, that lass at the hospital wasn't lying, everyone is running around doing Armok knows what.
A week later, 1st of Granite came and with it a new year that marks the 10th year since the founding of Mineforest, by The Tomb of Bravery... whatever that means. There was a short celebration in the dining hall. There I met a dorf named Shadowhammer, a miner who used to be a warrior until he lost his foot in battle against goblins a few years ago. He claimed to have slayed dozens of them before he was shot in his heel by a bolt, which was his only weak spot, coz he was dipped in Armok's bloody pool by his mum when he was a beardless baby, leaving only his foot mortal.  The other dorfs laughed and said he was more likely dipped in a pool of grizzly shit, coz most of him smells of it.
The next weeks were uneventful until some poor sod snapped and made an ugly marble "millstone". Right after that the mayor ordered me to dig a path to the water in the cavern below. The small pond was dry and we had people desperate for water. I asked why can't they go to the surface for water and she just laughed and said that I am free to try if I want to get burned. I replied by asking if the sun was really that bad. She just paled and yelled at me to get back to work.
When the work was done I told them to put a hatch on the stairs just to be sure since there was some movement in the water. Good thing I did because few days ago, there were screams coming from that same tunnel. When I went there I saw a pale lass sitting near the hatch sobbing. She told me that while they were getting water, something huge and purple came out of the water and started spitting saliva at them. The mayor, her baby and some other nameless sod "stayed behind" to "slow it down". She had just enough time to bar the hatch. Poor sods. We'll be choosing a new mayor in a few days, until then all work orders are on pause. Good for nothing politics.

He doesn't remember  :-X
He might get his memories back someday or he could take a stroll through the fortress.

Also, a migrant wave came.... well, more like a migrant pulse. An engraver that magically got past most of the *fun* and is now wondering in the sealed of part of the fortress and a friendly trader who is smart enough to stick by the end of the map. Since there is no fucking way I'm letting her inside right now, maybe I could use her for a short look at the rest of the fortress?

Recovered Journal of Etur Ibrukdatan, engraver and student of history:
15th of Slate, 16:
I've started leading a journal of my expedition in case of something happens to me. I've been sent by the mountainhomes to inquire into the state of the Mineforest outpost. There have been rumors of goblin sieges. I'm being accompanied by a trader to establish a contact in case there is someone still living there. So far the lack of wildlife as we approach the fortress has been unsettling. Birds are rare and even wolves aren't howling at night. Tomorrow we'll approach the fortress and see why that is.

16th of Slate, 16:
The first sight was troublesome. Ashes and wildlife bones dot the landscape and not a living being in sight. Could the goblins have tamed a dragon or some other fire breathing animal? Whatever happened here must have been recent. I've climbed the hill which the entrance to the fortress is located in. A huge stockpile of bones, mostly goblin and troll, was located here, but must be old since most of the bones are undisturbed. The trader decided to stay behind. I'll head inside tomorrow.

19th of Slate, 16:
The situation is worse then we feared. The entrance to the fortress was webbed in some strange silk. The fact that goblins came to tame and ride dragons and spiders is both puzzling and troubling. After getting through the silk and into the fortress gate, I found myself in broken and empty trap corridor with huge rooms filled with broken mechanisms and abandoned goods bins. There I encountered a dwarf corpse. There was no way to identify how he died since there was no flesh left on him. The most puzzling of it all was the fact that there were almost no goblin corpses, aside from few dotting the entrance to the stairway that must lead to the lower levels. Tomorrow, heading down there.

20th of slate, 16:
I've descended dozens of levels down, bones of goblins and trolls littering the stairway along the path. There was trash littered around more overflowing stockpiles. Why the goblins would leave such a wealth is beyond me. More trash, more bodies. I'll try to reach the graveyard and tombs that should be on the lower levels. Strange, I could swear I heard birds flapping down there. Could be cave swallows.

*a hastly writen entry with no date*
By Armok! What have the fools done!?! As I descended the stairs I found a huge bird sitting in the corner of the room turned to the wall. At first glimpse I thought it was a giant cave swallow. When I looked closely I noticed it had a shell and ribs outside it's body! Thinking I had stumbled upon a forgotten beast, I started to sneak back up... but then it turned around. It opened its enormous eye lids to reveal huge eyes black as night and spoke "you should stay for dinner little dwarf". That was no forgotten beast, it was a demon. The next moment screaming started... I run up the stairs as fast as I could and hid near the old farms. When I rest for a bit I am heading back to the mountainhomes... the Queen must be told. If you find this you must bring it to any representative of the Oracular Corridors government. The fate of the overworld rests at your hands!

It didn't, I trained multiple wolves (and ravens) into war animals during my stay.
Same hear... only noticeable difference is that engraved tiles don't show the objects that are engraved on them. They are just marked as engraved, which is fine by me... the dining halls get messy otherwise.

P.S. I've greatly underestimated the size of that  migrant wave... they kept coming weeks after the engraver. On the bright side (pun intended), an elven caravan came by and left blazing.

Wait a minute. WHO OPENED HFS!?!?!?
Fear not my friend... this on has a most extreme crazy dwarfy uberdwarfy solution to that problem... if it works.

Journal of Bokaza, entry 4:

The new mayor a miner, one from our ranks. A few weeks ago, he called me to his office and told me that, since the main dig is almost complete, I'm to be removed from it and tasked with digging out and smoothing his new tomb. He also stressed that it should be kept secret. When I asked why the secrecy and why he needs a tomb in a first place he just laughed and told me to get to it.
I went to the doc for a checkup. He told me my wounds have almost healed completely and that I don't have to use the crutch anymore. Only the infection on my shoulder doesn't seem to heal due to a lack of water that has been plaguing us for months. A top of that, it seems the screaming fella in the torture chamber finally die. Of thirst no less. The damn turkey is still there. Some more people are on a death roll it seems, unless we find water.
As soon as we've dug out and smoothed the tomb, a dwarfs started surging in bringing gold statues and furniture along with some  memorial slabs. When they were done, the Mayor came and told me to get some engravers and help them engrave the entire thing! Months of work! That was too much. I told him I won't do it, he just laughed, gave me a pat on the back and keys to the Captain of the Guard's quarters.
I like the new mayor.

Sorry for not doing any updates for 2 days... my windows kept crushing so I had to reinstall the windows. Gonna finish and upload till by tomorrow.   :-[

Journal of Bokaza, entry 5:

Works on the main dig is finished. I've heard mayor say it's suppose to be some kind of trap for whatever is outside. Everyone around the fort is in a state of preparation. Yesterday, major ordered all of the dwarfs that can wield a pick to come and meet him in his office. He said someone has to break the wall for the trap to work and that dwarf would be putting his life in great peril. Suffice to say whatever is outside has all of the miners spooked. Seeing that none of these cowards are going to I offered to do it, but under the condition that the Mayor gives me his own tomb for my body since I don't want to be buried with these cowards. He was angry, but he agreed.
Tomorrow I'll be heading out to what could be my death.

I'll upload it tomorrow for sure.

Journal of Bokaza, entry 6:

The operation seemed to have went well, up until it completely failed. I went up, broke the wall and went down to the gate to get back to safety. The Mayor was shocked at first that I even survived, but after couple of days he started ranting something about bait not being enough. He said that we need more sacrifice and ordered massive amounts of chains forged. When weeks passed without his orders not being fulfilled, it was discovered that the manager entered the trap building and hasn't come out yet. Mayor immediately had him replaced by some other dorf. When a week passed without his orders being done, The Mayor also had him replaced for spending all of his working time in the dining hall. He officially renamed him "worst manager ever". The new one was renamed "new manager" so he doesn't forget his job.

The life inside the fortress seems to be going normal. Other then one of the forge-workers staying inside his forge day and night drawing skeletons, metal bars and blocks, everyone else is going about their daily jobs. The mayor on the other hand, angry at the constant failures of the trap, has decided to drop leadership of the fort. He will keep his mayoral position, at least until the end of the year.  Since paper is becoming scarce and doing this hasn't helped return my memory, I won't be writing this journal from now on.

Granite the 6th, year 17:

An old miner commented that the goblin seige is being roasted to a green crisp "up there".  I didn't even know the goblins were seiging us!  Looks like our competent dwarven engineers are to be thanked for yet another task well accomplished.  Let's hear it for our boys!

Good to know.  Right now, Young miss, Timeless Lolokonrel isn't concerned with matters that are military in nature, so her updates are from what she experiences.  I imagine things might change when she has her "coming out" party and becomes an adult.

23rd of Galena, year the 17th:
Goblins are "being burnt to a crisp up there."

17th of Timber, year the 17th:
Goblins are "being burnt to a crisp up there again."

23 of Opal, year the 17th:
Master 'Nalko gave me a shiny blue coffer just 'cause I kissed his tummy!

26th of Opal. year the 17th:
Young Miss Timeless follows her older brothers into "The Labrynth"

18th of Malachite, year the 18th:
Young Miss Timeless rejoices: she has a new baby sister!

19th of Galena, year the 18th:
Goblins and Humans are "being burnt to a crisp up there."

22nd of Timber, year the 18th:
Goblins are "being burnt to a crisp up there."

6th of Moonstone, year the 18th:
Mommy says that once she's finished that I might get to smell a flower!  What's a flower I wonder?

22nd of Obsidian, year the 18th:
Master Edemthortith names himself "The Holy Cusp of Mineforest".

19th of Granite, year the 19th:
Goblins are "being burnt to a crisp down there"

5th of Slate, year the 19th:
There's dwarves up there singin' instead a screamin! "The Holy Cusp" starts prayin to the gods for guidance - he sure is loud!

26th of Slate, year the 19th:
The demon ate one of my brothers today - Father tried to be gentle tellin me about it, but miners just know how to dig in and go.
Ponderpages... <sniffles> I'm sorry I hid your mini-forge last week.

17th of Felsite, year the 19th:
Goblins killed my mommy today.  The demons all flew off 'cause the Holy Cusp shouted at 'em, but he couldn't scare away the goblins.  I love you, Mommy!  I love you so much!  The flowers were pretty but not as pretty as you, Mommy.  Mommy... I don't wanna leave my room no more, Mommy.  I'm just gonna stay right here in my room for awhile, OK?  I miss you Mommy.  SO MUCH!

20th of Felsite, year the 19th:
Goblins kidnapped my other brother, Alathdesor today.  Why do the goblins hate our family so much?  Why?  I'm gonna go get him back someday.  I promise I will!  It's so lonely around here now.  So quiet.

3rd of Malachite, year the 19th:
They found my baby sister, Sedurendok today.  She died 'cause Mommy wasn't able to feed her no more.  MOMMY WHY!!!!

5th of Malachite, year the 19th:
My eldest brother, Tobullular, was "Possessed by Armok" yesterday.  He chased someone down the hallway screaming for blood and was torn apart by the dogs.  Now it's just me, Kaco and Daddy left.  Just we three out of all our big family.  Just us.

9th of Malachite, year the 19th:
Kacothoslan was "possessed by Armok" today.  She was so little!  So little!  The dogs got her too.  Now it's just Daddy and me.  I'm three this year, but now we're two.  Two's not big at all.  Daddy says I'm his only treasure now.  I'm the only kid left out of all of us.  Just me.

15th of Malachite, year the 19th:
Daddy got in a fight in the dining room today.  The miner stuck a pick in his head, and now my daddy's dead too.  Now it's just me and I'm all alone.
   Alone.

26th of Malachite, year the 19th:
I strangled one of those murderous dogs in the hallway, then ran back here to my room, but only 'cause the ghost told me to do it, I swear!  I'm a treasure!  My Daddy said so! I miss you all SO MUCH.

27th of Malachite, year the 19th:
The Holy Cusp is dead today.  He scared off the demons and killed all the goblins and he died because he touched some snail goo.  The ghosts say it's all my fault, but I'm just a little kid, what was I supposed to do? ITS NOT FAIR!

Little Timeless Lolo won't be writing any more in her journal, I'm sad to say.

I like the writing style.

Also, I noticed a strange coincidence:
It didn't, I trained multiple wolves (and ravens) into war animals during my stay.
Wolves and ravens are used as symbols of carnage in Celtic mythology. Perhaps this was an omen of the FUN about to ensue...

Those are inevitable in games like this. I have to say, ignorant fortress seems to be VERY interesting so far, but what happens when those who HAD turns take another turn? How hilarious is it gonna be when they're handed someone 100% different? I'm already scared to look at the save...

What we have here is the cycle of rebirth made manifest.  Each re-player just needs to continue on from where they ended in their "last life".  Obviously, their karmic burden is to fix whatever horrors they caused in their last life or be doomed to be born again.  It's very fung shuei.

OOC: It's fairly laggy. As in normally it's fine at 50 fps, but as soon as the goblins arrived, it dropped to 12.
~~~
So many have fallen. I was overseeing burial, and one slab in particular caught my eye; it was dedicated to “master Shadowhammer”, who apparently was killed this year by some kinda weird quetzal thing. He had only slain one goblin, but he died defending his home from a terrible foe, and that is enough for me to call him a hero. Now he lies forgotten in some deep cavern, along with so many other heroes.
~~~
Well, that's basically my turn. Here's the save:

I'm thinking of a migration... I haven't looked at the save yet, but I'm scared to...

If we DO migrate, a quick explination of what happened should be made by the last player before the next one is involved, so that way, we look at the finished product and go

How the hell did all THIS happen?

Eheheheh. I remember removing traps from your Tunnel of Love and expanding it. I moved the traps to the entrance directly since I was under siege and we were on the brink of dying. I was planning to kill the lot of them using traps and moving all dwarfs to the expanded Tunnel of Love. Imagine my rage and surprise when I discovered that the siege was lifted without me even doing anything...

Well, I couldn't figure out how the levers work + there was a stairway leading to the fortress on the side of the labyrinth which allowed Trolls to run in. No worries though, as a certain philosopher said: "Shit Happens".^^

I've looked around the fortress and it seems, since there are multiple forgotten beast around, a military style reclaim would be too time consuming and would take a lot of reembarks. So... I've devised a "viable" plan for reclamation of Mineforest. I used "viable" in the loosest way possible since my plans haven't really worked before.

If we presume that most of the fortress mechanisms are intact I could simply embark, quickly make a new sealed off fortress and them dig down to the main fortress level. Once there, you only need to hit the switch to close the bridge that separates it from the rest of the fortress. I'm not really sure what's down there, but there should be ways draw all the baddies outside before doing that. The down side to this plan is... we would still be separated from the surface, just like the old days of the demon possessed Mineforest. ::)

Currently, I have no time to execute any of this since college will keep me tied down at least for the whole week. If anyone wants to execute my plan be my guest... otherwise you'll have to wait at least until sunday for me to see this through.   :(

Journal of Highmax, Ex-Baron of Mineforest
Well, I really have no idea how this happened, but next thing I know, I took six smartest dwarves amongst myself to go and try to escape the damned fortress of Mineforst. Well, we decided to get away from there... And by get away from there, I mean GET AWAY. Like the other half of the world away. It took us some time, but we're now at a nice mountain in the middle of a grasslands. Its much more beautiful then the frozen over mineforest... And on the bright side, it is much much warmer, although others say its burning hot. I'm fine with the heat myself. Elves, Humans and Goblis are our neighbours, as well as the mountainhomes not far to the east of us. Well, lets get started on the second chapter of Mineforest, which shall be known now as: MINEFIELD! ((Its not what you think guys...))

No spoilers remember :P But honestly I did not do that much. Can I get back on the rotation? Please? I promise not to mod kittens to explode^^

Yup, nothing to see here..... [Walks away whispering nonchalantly]

But in all honesty it is normal for reclaim^^

Its significant enough because the fortress fell when those four showed up and kinda murdered everything that moved

They weren't there when I was getting murdered by goblins and trolls, although details like that can be overlooked when you have your lungs kicked in^^ What about my question?

So far, its Me, you and exodius thus far. I'll edit the OP in a couple mintues

EDIT:
OP is updated. I'll be hutting the save off as soon as I get 5 years of my time is up. I extended it to two weeks, but there has to be small write-ups about what you CAN say so the thread doesn't die and we forget about it... Like I did...

Can we say things related to our profession? Like a furnace operator mentioning a new type of ore?

Not a problem! I may have to alter the rules slightly, but this is a wonderful idea. I'm thinking that there might be every five turns a complete idea on what is happening, what the place looks like, etc. so pretty much, an elected official takes over and gives a summary of what's going on, so others who don't play can see what's going on. Screenshots will be allowed at that turn, but it's a one time deal and only at the beginning.

I would join now, but in the middle of writing a novel, and doing another fortress. So as a work a-round, could you put me in reserve for December?
