DF General Discussion / Re: Hypothetical human mode

It's right there in the original design notes. So not a completely outrageous idea.

HUMAN TOWN: You should be able to control a human town, as you control a dwarf fortress, but with changes appropriate to the new setting. Related to Req469 and Bloat146.

Why havn't you added crates to store logs and stones yet, toady?

It's very immersion breaking to have to quantum stockpile all the stone because there's just so much of it.

Crates as a method of holding up to 10 stone or logs makes perfect sense to me. If we have bins, why not crates?

Please add crates Toady.
There's a suggestion forum for suggestions. Find the thread on crates for stones (possibly there are several, likely all by the same person, but any one will.do) and add to that conversation.

DF Modding / Re: How do I access the new renderer in DF Classic?

Remember the raws are free. Only the graphics themselves (and the music) is "premium".

All txt files in the "vanilla_*" folders and their subfolders, and all files in the "interaction examples" and "examples and notes" folders, are released into the public domain:  to the extent permitted by law, we waive all copyright to them.  We will not pursue a copyright claim even if this waiver is not applicable in a given area.

But, yes, huge job, which is why there aren't any complete sets out there yet. That and the new interface has trouble with quite a few of the different tileset sizes right now, which I don't think is fixed yet, is it?

DF General Discussion / Re: Will Legacy be developed anymore?
« on: November 26, 2023, 09:27:37 pm »
V50 is the result of development from ver .47 (what you're calling "Legacy" not what Legacy DF actually is). So we already have exactly what you're asking for.

What you are probably looking for is a fork with .47 as a starting point to fix bugs (except the ones you enjoy), add modern elements but not too many, improve the UI but not too much, improve the way the graphics work but not too much, etc. Would need people who agreed what that is supposed to be and, vitally, how much development is "too much" for this theoretical group of elitists, etc.

And the source code obviously, which you're not likely to ever get.

"What do you think of me?"
"You are pleasure to talk with, but you are dangerous beast and this has come between us" *draws knife*

That and people complaining that their neighbours have no religion and something must be done about it.

Not sure what part of that is meant to be directed at Toady, but around here, we change the colours of whatever sentence or paragraph, using the dropdown list if we have to, to lime green to facilitate it, thanks very much.

Did I understand correctly that if I want to address something directly to ToadyOne, then I should highlight my text in lime green? It's just that I'm new to the forum and haven't really sat on it before, I'll be glad of any such information. Thanks!
That's correct (only applies to this monthly Q&A thread - but chances are he won't see anything posted anywhere else except in the suggestions forum.).

How much procedural construction of paragraphs does Cataclysm DDA actually do? Is there anything akin to the musical form constructions? Or even the artifacts? Let alone Mythgen...

About the Steam release of Adv Mode - I wonder if the intention is "just" to do graphics and fix the many UIs, and then release it with pretty much the gameplay of the pre-Steam version - or if the goal is to streamline it some more before release by filling out some the "holes" in the gameplay - such as the impossibility of geting clothes and armor for very large/small animal people?
Not meant as an answer, but you can make the stuff in a fortress and have your adventurer visit to pick up his change of clothes.

Given that UI is your current focus: are you aware of certain procgen code shenanigans (gremlin-style lever pulling, I guess) causing disruption in adv character gen, such as this (Discord: https://discord.com/channels/329272032778780672/1049402643342168114/1119264182093758541); also a long-standing calendar ☼engraving☼ that needs attention?
Pretty sure these bugs are on the bug tracker.
And if they're not, well, can't blame Toady for not knowing about bugs that no-one thought were important enough to report.

But, fairly sure they are.

DF Bug Reports / Re: Notes on Bug Reporting
« on: July 02, 2023, 04:20:43 pm »
Yeah, that still loads for me. Hmm, it used to be linked to on https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ but now there's no link for bug reporting. May be there's changes coming?
I still see a Bug Tracker link on the front page. Links to the Kitfox info about the new tracker now though.

I already asked something similar here, but I thought maybe it would be better to do so here. It's basically the same thing:

Is there a roadmap being followed?
or
What would be the best way to keep track of the development of Dwarf Fortress?
The version number of the game indicates the percentage of features implemented from a list they have of "features for game to be considered 1.0".

Of course they go off-track at times, but the past few years have been pretty much following the plan. Last time things took a diversion as I recall was in implementing villainous networks, turned out the world wasn't varied enough for networks to work properly so guilds, religious strife, love, jealousy, envy, mercenary groups and various noble positions were added.

Oh, and then someone said "let's add graphics and release on Steam!" recently, that was quite a bit off-map (they were always there, but assumed to be much later on).

It's a real pain compared to 47.05 where simply tapping 'p" would get you the info you need instantly in a text file (with the new civ at the bottom of the file).
Basically have to go through the list of civs in legends Mode searching for one which didn't begin in the year 1 and work backwards from there to find out who released them. Of course, the civs are mixed in with all sorts of other groups so it takes a while.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: [50.08] Why was so much taken out?!
« on: May 20, 2023, 06:47:47 pm »
1) You...can? What details are you missing?
2) Because they decided micromanagement hell was not the way they wanted the new interface to be so you don't have to any more. They've talked about reintroducing some kind of detailed control for micromanagers. Problem is making sure it's hidden enough for people not to mistake it for the intended system, probably.
3) New system. Doesn't work as well as they thought it would. That's, you know, Dwarf Fortress development for you. Not unique to Steam release. Maybe it'll get improved later.
4) Same as 3
5) Because the keyboard controls haven't been added yet. They didn't take them away, the new interface is a mouse controlled interface. You can't "take something away" if it never existed (unless you mean the entire horrific old UI, in which case, well tough, removing that was the point of the the release).
When they add the keyboard controls, as they said they would, you'll have keyboard controls.

DF Suggestions / Re: Steam ASCII Mode Improvements
« on: May 07, 2023, 04:08:58 pm »
The limitations to the interface when using ascii mode in the latest version of the game are the same regardless of where you got it from. Steam Itch, free from here. There's only one game.

Colours work in exactly the same way as they always have done, just replace the colors.txt file. Zoom, yes broke, which is annoying, but on its way back at some point. Tarn's mentioned it's a priority.

You currently can just flip between ASCII and graphics mode. There's only one single UI. (Settings - use Ascii glyphs yes/no). That's kind of the problem as it wasn't really designed with ascii mode in mind.

There are videos on YouTube where Tarn explains the game's current development. In addition he holds a monthly Q&A in the thread Future of the Fortress where you can ask him anything you like about improvements to the interface.

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 50.08 Released
« on: May 06, 2023, 09:32:50 am »
Yeah, the forum's header is still saying latest version is 50.06.

And honestly while I still haven't been able to set aside some dosh online to get the steam version, the fear of adventure mode going the way of giant desert scorpions and curious underground structure is the other thing keeping me from getting it for the time being.

While stuff like better tilesets and mouse support and all that are really neat and probably great for new players, my main reason to move to the steam version would be to continue work on my main mod, which isn't really feasible at the moment since no adventure mode.

Though honestly I've been busy as fuck with other projects like contributing to BN as well as IRL stuff, and I'm basically going to have to recreate Adventurecraft from scratch because the raw folders are structured completely differently, so even if we do get adventure mode back I'm not sure how long it'd take me to get it in working order. @_@
You really think they're going to spend the year working on upgrading Adventurer and then say "you know what, we don't want it after all".
How long have you followed development exactly?
