Nippon, land of the rising sun. A land of beauty, mysticism, intrigue and war. 8 Great clans rule the island, bowing only to the heavenly Emperor and his Shogun.

You were a samurai. Your clan, small though it might have been, once held a high post in the Emperor's service. But it was not to be. Jealous rival clans conspired against you, wanting the position for their own. They attacked and killed all of your clan. Your friends, your family, your wife and your child, none were spared. You were branded outlaw, your rank and clan stripped away from you. They tried to eresa you as well, but somehow you managed to escape.

The journey has been long, and it is good to remind oneself of the details. Because make no mistake, today marks the beginning of your quest for vengeance, to restore honour to your clan name so that the spirits of your clanmates may walk into the afterlife without anything tying them down. The very souls of your family and friends are at stake, and you are the only person left to reclaim their honour.

Born on a certain day to uncertain parents, the hero of the prophecy was supposed to go through the trials and become the next Hortator and Nerevarine. To gain acceptance from Ashlander clans and Great Houses alike, and ultimately defeat the menace of Dagoth Ur beneath Red Mountain. It would have been a journey fraught with peril, new friends and many wonderous experiences.

It was a great surprise to the weavers of fate then, when the supposed hero did not follow the prophecy. Instead he spend several days brewing potions, repeatedly. Then he ingested an ungodly amount of what basically amounts to hard drugs, stole the nearest weapon he could find and sprinted off into the swamps. That is the last people saw of him. Unbeknownst to the world at large, the hero then picked up a scroll of Icarian Flight and jumped off into the sunset.

Also unbeknownst to the world at large, though it is something it could probably have guessed, hard drugs and flying do not go well together. The supposed hero completely misjudged his jump. Instead of landing safely at the base of Red Mountain, He jumped too high and too fast, much like Icarus. Unlike Icarus, he did not have his wings melt by the presence of the sun. Instead he smashed against the mountainside, reducing both the hero and the prophecy to a broken mess. Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die.

As such, Dagoth Ur's plans currently go unnoposed and you find yourself in a doomed world, it's threads of fate severed. But prophecies do have a way of popping up in the most unexpected of places, so all hope may not be lost...

Seyda Neen harbour
Your boat arrives in the humble harbour of Seyda Neen. It has been a long time at sea, even the mere thought of getting back on some solid ground fills you with happiness. Walking off of the boat and onto the docks, you take a deep breath. You'd love to say that this fresh air is exactly what you wanted, but to be honest it kind of smells like fish. You don't really get to do any sightseeing yet as the dock is surrounded by a large wall and a building. You are lead into the Census and Excise Office by an imperial soldier. Inside, you are greeted by a man called Socucius Ergalla.

"Ah yes, we've been expecting you. You'll have to complete some paperwork before you can leave and continue your voyage. Just a formality, I assure you it won't take long."

June 1943
Somewhere in the USA

You sit in uncomfortable chairs in a dark room. You were led here by men without names and without ditinguising marks on their military uniforms. The speaker who stands at the front of the room is so deep in the shadows that you can only see the silhoutte of a man in a suit wearing a hat. The only bit of light in the room is the beam of the slide projector that is currently putting letters O.P.S. on the wall in front of you. Someone starts speaking, and you can only assume it is the figure in the shadows.

"O.P.S., or the Office of the Paranormal and Supernatural. We usually just call it OPS, it sounds a lot snappier. I'd love to tell you that we're something new that I've dreamed up myself, but the truth of the matter is that this is just the last in a long series of organisations whose purpose it is to keep all the wierd things out of the wrong hands. There have been many before this one, the knights hospitaller, the Hellsings, the order of the silver cross, to name a few."

The slide changes, now showing a map of the world, with a lot of places coloured in like the nazi flag.

"But I fear all of those little organisations are no longer enough. You see, it used to be just a single madman, a group of demon worshippers or a stray king who went looking for what shouldn't be found. But now, we find ourselves at the mercy of a collective effort to gather up all of the things we've fought so desperately to keep hidden. And frankly, each organisation on their own just doesn't have the manpower or resources to stop them. So we've banded together, all over the world, to protect the world from the dark corners it really shouldn't stick its hands into. Make no mistake, we’re not here to win the war. That’s not our duty, let the normal military handle all of that. We’re here for the things that go bump in the night."

The slide changes a few times, showing different scenes. A woman seemingly levitating in the air. A suit, hat and glasses, floating as if worn by an invisible man. A soldier fighting on, despite having a huge hole in his chest.

"And that's where you come in. You’ve been brought here by my associates. My spooks sniffed you out because, wether you know it or not, you possess certain gifts. Something that makes you unique. I realize the methods my spooks used to get you here were'nt always the most enjoyable. I won't apologize for this, however, for the times have made me a desperate man. I am thankful that you've said yes to our proposal to join this team."

The slide projector turns off and the lights on the ceiling blink on, revealing the speaker. He is wearing a dark, striped suit with a hat and tie in the same colour. He is also a skeleton.

"Let's get to know each other before we continue on, shall we? They call me Mortimer, and I lead this branch of the network, just as I’ve lead many before it. So, tell me a little bit about yourself. And if you have any questions, feel free to ask them right now.”

Today is June 10th, 2084. The small airport somewhere between Johannesburg and the vast slums of Upington is rather calm today. Two men dressed in black sit near the back wall, one wearing a trench coat and the other wearing sunglasses. Opposite from them is another man wearing a business suit and a guy dressed as a hobo. Occupying the corner sofa is a young man with his laptop. None of them have noticed yet, but one of the security cameras is currently behaving rather eratically, scanning each of them as if it was curious about its surroundings. A few other people, who are far less interesting, are milling about the lobby, waiting for their flights to arrive.

The heat is really something else today. The sun is at high noon, and the air conditioning seems to be broken in the building. Though, in a dump like this there might never have been any air condition in the first place. The robotic secretary at the check in desk grabs the microphone and speaks over the P.A. System. First in Afrikaans, then in English.

"Die vlug van 12 uur het ongeveer 'n uur vertraging. The 12 'o clock flight will be about an hour late.”

Well, looks like the shipment of weapons won't be arriving just yet.

Hello, welcome. I am pancaek, up until now you'll really only ever have seen me in the rtd subforum. Today, I'd like to try my hand at something slightly different. You see, I would like to try my hand at something that isn't quite as dependend on the whims of rngeezus, or at the very least something that encourages roleplay. A little more freeform, if you will, where your success doesn't depend so much on the roll of the dice, but more on the abilities of your character. I am, however, having a hell of a time finding a nice system to do so. My best suggestion so far would be a really light variant of fudge dice, going something like this:

Spoiler: tiny system (click to show/hide)

Now, on to the main course, the setting. I'm frankly starved for some ghost in the shell like cyberpunk. This means Human augmentation, hacking, netsurfing, ai's and all of that good stuff. If you've ever seen anything ghost in the shell or played deus ex, that's what we're going for. I'll also be incorparating some elements of other franchises, most notably the space station from elysium where the 1% lives. I'm also mentioning metal gear, because if you ask me questions about how a particular tech works, all you're getting is technobabble. I ain't no scientist. Also, I feel like the metal gear franchise has a nice thing going where they can be tounge-in-cheek and not too serious from time to time.

Spoiler: more background (click to show/hide)

The idea is for the players to be a group of friends/coworkers, mostly so that we don't have too much splitting up the party. I'm perfectly fine with small groups or even lone players doing their thing, so long as it's all within the same city or so. It gets hard to keep track when one guy is getting bushwacked in africa, two people are getting arrested in detroit, all while two other guys are getting scammed on cheap augs in China. I may railroad you into a certain situation to start with, but what you want to do after that is up to you. Just try not to just work 9-5 jobs in cubicles, unless that's really your thing.

So, speak up if you have any thoughts about the system, questions about the setting or if you feel like this is something you might want to play.

EDIT: added some background, and the signup sheet for if you feel like making a character already.

In life, you were a legend. They said you were extraordinary, that you were without equal.
They might have said you were a hero of the arena, the unbeaten champion of the colosseum.
They might have said that you were a great knight, a champion of your faith, protected as much by your armour as by the favour of your god.
They might have said you were a great wizard or witch, the very fabrics of reality bending to your will.
They might have said you were the Red Oni of the Takeda clan, ripping apart Oda soldiers with unmatched fury as your clan made its last glorious charge.
You might have been the last true samurai of the Boshin war, fighting with the honour and courage of a era long past and forgotten in this time of gunpowder.
You might have been a shaman of your people, guiding them with the wisdom of the spirits of nature.
You might have been the luckiest gunslinger in the west, never missing a single shot, always the quickest on the draw.
You might have been a hero at Verdun, charging across the wasteland, bullets miraculously zipping just past you, with your bayonet pointed at the enemy and a yell of pure rage on your lips.

But legends...legends are a weird sort. Though in our reality they are mostly false, tales that got out of hand, the words carry power. And that power often refuses to just dissapear. It lingers in the minds and in the very being of those who live. And sometimes...

Sometimes it gets a life of its own in a different place alltogether.

Roll To Dodge / Roll to get spooky: turn 9: screamin'
« on: December 06, 2015, 02:49:29 pm »
The world is saved. For now. Probably. Actually, it's still somewhat teetering on the edge. Many people played a role in this story. It is not a straightforward tale of a lone hero going on the path that was his destiny from the moment he was born. Rather, it is a complex web of many people stumbling along and trying their best to do what they think is right. Not unlike the web of a spider who is both drunk and really, really high. It would be impossible to tell the story of all of these people at once, so for now we are going to look at four poor schmucks living in Verdunville, a small and rather ignored town in the southern United States. The next large city is at least a hour and half drive away. Or a solid hour by train.

Verdunville is known for two things. Many weird things have happened their since it was first settled back ye olden days. And it a city filled with people who are down on their luck. The poor, criminal, mentally ill. It isn't a horrible place to live, really, and most of its inhabitants are just your average joes, but the statistics don't lie. Among its major landmarks are a large lake surrounded by forest, a mall whose framework was finished but was never put in use because no chain thought it profitable enough to put a store in this town, a large trailer park, a rather nice church and a deserted hospital. The thrilling nightlife in this town includes such highlights as a dvd rental store, a small cinema and more sleazy bars than you can shake a stick at. Truly, redneck valhalla. This is the place where our four unfortunate souls live, for one reason or another. And it's where things...are going to get weird.

The year is 2025. There has been a second ebola outbreak, a new cold war has broken out between China, Russia and the US and Firefly is still cancelled. On the bright side, you managed to get some time off from whatever you usually do and are about to go on a trip. Each one of you signed up for some kind of life insurance should the world end. Some of you knew eachother already, others are new. You didn't really read much of it, but it came 90% off and had a free vacation, so why not? You and the group of people you're going with have just joined up after checking in at the airport.

I realize that you're not really getting much backstory. That's because the world of 2025 isn't much different from the world of today, and most of the fun in this one is going to be derived from being put in weird places. I hope.

Not first come first serve. 5 spots. 24 hours at the very least. Spoiler: we're going to space, baby!

During WWII times were bleak until the greatest hero mankind had ever seen came onto the scene. Admiral America, hero of the allies, came to us out of nowhere single handedly turned the war. How can we ever forget his most famous words, "The battleship of freedom will never sink, fascist!", as he punched out Adolf and ended the war. Thus he banded together with heroes from around the world to form the Super Armada. He recruited Comrade Winter, Madame Areiné and The Steel Samurai. Together, they ushered in a new age of peace and safety. The Super Armada and other, lesser heroes, kept the world safe for many, many years!

But something has happened. The heroes of the world are no longer answering their callsigns. The Super Armada have not been sighted for months. Even worse, all new villains are pounding on humanities door! And because the police and militaries haven't had to worry about doing any work for over 60 years, they are severely under staffed and under funded to do anything about it. Humanity can only cower behind the couch as evil breaks down the door! Even right now, megacity 15 is under siege from by new villains! Will nobody stand up against them?!

The year is 1951. The korean war rages on. The cold war between the West and the Soviet union is getting colder by the year. And amids all the turmoil, things have started to go bump in the night. People go missing in eastern europe. Cattle gets massacred in mexico. The dead walk the earth. But the world isn't ready for news like that, it never was. So you tell them that organ thieves plague Eastern Europe. That it was nothing but rival farmers having a feud. Swamp gas. Hell, they'll believe anything if it helps them sleep at night.

But not you. You have been chosen to join the Quixote Organisation. An international and unofficial group that gets to investigate and silence everything that normal people don't want to see. Operating from an off the grid base in Switzerland, these brave men and women keep the world safe from things have no place existing in the first place. So whenever strange lights shine in the sky, when grandma won't stay in her coffin, when things go bump in the night...you'll know who to call.

You find yourself in a small conference room with three other new hires. You're seated at a large metal table, with the white styrofoam cup containing the horrid coffee they gave you when you arrived sitting in front of you. You're glad they didn't ask you to remove your coat, because the room is uncomfortably cold.

James, the british guy who welcomed you off the bus earlier, comes in with a large manila folder under his arm.

"All right people, let's get to business, shall we? I've got your first assignment here already. Seems like whole villages have been going missing in South-America." He looks up for the first time since entering, looking at the people seated at the table.
"Ah, you're the newcomers. I suppose I'm getting ahead of myself. Seeing as you're all new, how about we introduce ourselves first?"

Roll To Dodge / Uskarian Adventures : It's dead, Jim.
« on: January 05, 2014, 07:24:41 pm »
Uskarian Adventures

This world is full of wonders and diverse peoples. There are the great oceans, inhabited by wild and mythical beasts. The island nations, with the furtive amphibean people. The lush jungles, inhabited by the cat people. The great deserts and ancestral forests, with the lizards and elves. The great and hilly plains of the south, home to the great Empire. Great, majestic mountains, home to the dwarves. And many wild and yet unexplored lands, filled with excitement and wonders beyond all imagining.

This is not where you are.

You are in Uskaria, a country that is mostly a transit hub between the many nations. Completely surrounded by treacherous, spikey mountains, called the Jagged Crown. The only ways in are three small passes, two in the south, one in the north. For reasons that are your own, you were in this country 6 months ago, when disaster struck. The passes and the Crown where filled by a thick, dark grey fog. Whoever ventured into the fog always turned up right back where they started. Some would walk for hours, days even in this fog, but the moment they turn around they are right back at the entrance. This is where you are.

"Aye, it's been a right nasty time, it has." The bald, bearded innkeeper sighs behind the bar. "Six months everyone's been stuck here now. Goods and materials can't be sold or imported and everyone's gettin' jumpy. The guys over at the halfmoon citadel are none too pleased they can't get reinforcements from the Empire. And the elf "king" in the west doesn't like them scouring his domain for the cause of this mist. If that aint enough, the great river is runnin' wild and there are reports of demons from the other side of the Maheric bridge. I don't know about no demons, but the dwarves have gone completely silent in their little mountain. Strange times..." He suddenly slams the glass he was polishing on the counter. "And if that ain't enough, I've got you bunch of freeloaders to take care of! You sods haven't paid for your rooms in over a month now! I know work is scarce, but I'm going to need some money, soon!"

oh dear, looks like you're going to need a job. Maybe dungeoneering for loot? Or asking around for any favors to the townsfolk of Sanaan. simply leg it? What to do, what to do....

Roll To Dodge / The mars anchor war: fighting the wyrmlings
« on: August 03, 2013, 02:57:11 pm »
Two men in labcoats sit next to eachother, staring at a computer screen. "So, what do you think it is?" "I don't know, we've never seen anything like it" They argue back and forth while looking at the pictures of a mechanical arm drilling into an object stuck in reddish sand. A third man, taller than the other two by a wide margin, stands up from his chair and exits the room, shaking his head. "Did the door just open on itself?" "what? Nah, must be the wind. What do the readings say?"

Today is August the 3rd 2013, 21:00. The sun has just started setting and is casting a red hue over the horizon. "An ill omen" says the Tall man. "I know, rusty, I know" says the man next to him on the pier as he scratches his beard and takes another pull from his cigar. He puts his hat on his greying hair and tosses the cigar, "Let's just hope the seers are wrong about this". "doubtful, my old friend, doubtful..."

What is this all about?: This is my first rtd. It will at one point have a dystopian setting with magic and fantastical creatures, with maybe some cyberpunk elements. But that is for a (hopefully near) future. right now we're in august 2013, and everything is about to change. to clarify, none of you are mages yet, but I can't very weel hide the fact that there will be a magic stat, so you can just work it into your bio as being latent.
