Fortress Mode 'Soundtrack'
« on: June 17, 2008, 05:32:19 pm »

I love the Dwarf Fortress theme, but after listening to it approximately a trillion times it starts to get pretty repetitive.

My solution, for now, is the following selection of music. I've included a 'theme' for the Embark screen, each class of settlement, each season, sieges, and one for goblin forts/caves (the latter is more appropriate for adventurer mode, I suppose).

They're all midis, so the .zip file is kept quite small (29kb). The quality of the songs will probably vary depending on what program you're using; if you're looking for a good midi player, try the excellent JetAudio.

Download it here.

(On that note, I'd be amused to see other players' soundtrack choices for the game, if any of you have one put together!)

I like it.

My only real comment about it so far is that the mountain home track is blank.

Thanks for letting me know. Oddly, even after downloading it, I can still play the track you're referring to. I used WinRAR to convert the file to a .zip, so perhaps WinRAR needs to be used to unzip it.

If anyone else has this problem let me know and I'll change the file to a .rar.

I use winRAR.  I'll try downloading and decompressing it again.

Edit: Well it sort of works now - if I let it just start and play it won't play anything, but if I drag the cursor to adjust where the music is, it will start up there.  Very odd.

Having no problems, and not using winRAR.
Fantastic stuff by the way.

EDIT: Hours of playing Fire Emblem has completely ruined "Goblin Fortress" and "Autumn" for me though.  I just keep seeing the characters having their text-scrolling conversations in my head.

pretty nice set of songs, do you know if the next version of the game will let you set these up to autoplay in game? :P
I've read the devblog but might have missed something about adding more audio settings.

Why is it that the lower class the ones are ( new forts ) the more depressing the music?

Heh. Goes to show you that it's all a matter of perception. From my perspective, I chose more 'lonely', wild-sounding tracks for newer settlements because I find them more appropriate to the theme of seven dwarves roughing it in a previously unsettled area. As the settlement levels grow I tried to choose tracks that became increasingly 'darker' and more ominous sounding..

Perhaps my taste in music is just skewed, though. I tend to like music that other people dub over-mellow and depressing..

(I'm a big Radiohead fan :D)

Edit: Also, 'lighter'-themed midi music tends to get really, really annoying to me after a while.

There have been an awful lot of these threads, but we could always do with more music I say. Anyway, what do I listen to? Usually one of these two streaming videogame music sites:
http://rainwave.cc/
http://www.kohina.com/
Neither is quite 'fantasy' enough for me though so I usually tend to swap over to a folder full of assorted RPG's and other fantasy game's soundtracks; Diablo, Ultima, Lost Eden, mehbeh a little Metroid, Castlevania, and particularly a pair of soundtracks to the Phoenix Wright games, one orchestral and one more jazz themed. And last, but most certainly not least, my very favorite of all game soundtracks, Total Annihilation.
I also have a few tracks that were downloaded in music packs for Oblivion and Morrowind, so if you ever need some appropriate music just find an Elder Scrolls mod database and search for music.

God, are any of these from runescape? I played that like 3 years ago, but I still remember the music.
It was Boooring sometimes.
These work rather well though.

Everytime I see an ambush I pretend an 'Urgal Hunting Horn' call and then horse calls. Then I imagine the sound of lots of squat bodies rolling down the hill back into the fort. Then, the battle...
