DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: May 21, 2020, 07:06:31 pm »
A human lasher wants to take an artifact back home. Odd. ???

Odd because we made that artifact. It was our first one, a platinum scepter that quadrupled our fort's value.
Is this some really stupid villain's idea of a heist?

In possibly the silliest mistake I've ever made I breached the side of a magma pool to get a quicker look at the extent of the magma sea, and that was fine. It started leaking magma into the 3rd cavern but I channeled some ditches and built walls on the far side to halt the flood, problem solved.

Fast forward a bit and I'm getting "No water source" cancellation spam. A quick check of the well reveals it's dry. That shouldn't be possible, it's fed by the small edge of map pond in the 3rd cavern that is the only source of water on the map. Said pond is currently covered in magma, because for some reason I don't think magma had pressure, and that it would stop if it encountered something it couldn't just flow down over the edge of.

Now I'm organising the controlled cave-in stone plugs I should've have made to begin with. I sure hope we can mine out our water source again...  :-[

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves won't equip most foreign weapons
« on: June 04, 2018, 08:30:39 pm »
Haven't found its entry on the tracker but I believe you may be suffering from an old bug mentioned in this thread.

For brevity though the relevant part is "Because of a bug in fortress mode, only the racial average specified in the raws will be taken into account when a dwarf goes to choose a weapon, as opposed to the dwarf's individual size, so they will never take a weapon with a minimum size of over 60000, even if they would be large enough to use it just fine."

Someone who is less inept at using the tracker should be able to find it's entry and figure out if it ever got fixed.
As also mentioned in that thread though, lowering the size requirement on the weapons by a fraction would probably be the least game breaking fix.

Rebuilding my second militia squad after the latest siege caused some casualties, trying to clean up all the corpse bits before everyone goes mad from dwelling on seeing them, the Baron keeps flipping out and beating people and we found a candy cane that reaches all the way to the third cavern.
I updated to the latest version in the hopes the broken thoughts system would provide some FUN! and oh boy is it ever.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best Trap Component

Spiked balls because they can turn wood into something worth more than its weight in gold.  As well as actually being used in traps.
I don't understand this.
Referring to trap components being a high value basically weightless trade item. Spiked wooden balls are dirt cheap to make on any map with trees and start at 126 dorfbucks each, compared to the 3 bucks each log is worth. A decently skilled carpenter will soon start pumping out masterworks worth around 1500 dorfbucks each. Like prepared meals they're valuable to the point of being exploity.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Why did the cyclops die?
« on: March 07, 2018, 01:26:07 am »
Was there any sort of cliff it could have fallen off of? It sounds like charging or dodging off a high place from that report.
Or a tree maybe? Can cyclops and turkeys climb?

There's also the old tree spawns under creature trapping them in branches bug. That might have led them to fall.

A quick search fails to find any info on the wiki, but there's a theory that dwarves only spar when their weapon skill levels are relatively equal.
With the Drill Sargent being so much more skilled than the rest of his squad could that be causing them to put off sparring until they've caught up to him a bit more?

+1 for Whisperwhip!

Taupe reenacting Pacific Rim is one of the best things I've seen come out of this forum.
Hoping if we get it inducted he'll want to come back and play some more.

I can help with the dumping.

Hit d-b-d and then mark out a rectangle, everything inside is now marked for dumping.
In the same d-b menu you will also find mass forbidding, reclaiming and melting. All very useful to have.
Can't say if they're DfHack or not, since I don't play without it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Open Pit Mine

Ages ago did a quarry for a human challenge fort, its pretty easy to setup, but not very efficient at tracking down all the valuable ores that aren't in the area you chose to mine. Still have some pics.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Just leave one tile unchanneled, and move that tile over one each time you go down a layer. Leaves you with a nice little switchback ramp.
They also make great places to dump your garbage if you ever decide you're done with them.

How long ago did you stop playing? What version was it?

You can use U-H-M-K to expand/contract when you build your walls and floors just like with farm plots, or there might be a utility to help you, Quickfort possibly, though I've never used it so I may be completely wrong.

Tometowers keeps on keeping on after another lengthy break.

A useless hunter got killed by a wolverine.
Goblinite delivery let me test the new bunker and its working great, would be better if idiots didn't insist on hauling the gold doors they finally got up the mountain halfway back down it.  ::)
Palace throne room is 80% done, as is the royal quarters. Monarch finally living in mountaintop palace as was the fort's goal all along.
Human caravan exploded self again. Bizarrely in the one area I can guarantee there are no body parts.  ::)
Got another artifact floodgate, that makes 3 artifact floodgates and two grates. I guess this a sign from the gods I need to build some sort of unnecessarily complex plumbing system.

DF General Discussion / Re: How old is the average dwarf fortress player?
« on: September 04, 2017, 07:18:05 pm »
Been playing since I was 20, 3 years back now.
There was a thread in the past that talked about the patience and maturity needed to learn and enjoy the game as a reason why the forum is so nice to be on, everyone here is capable of acting like adults, and most probably are adults.
I knew a guy who was into DF when I was in high school, about 16 at the time, but I reckon the number of people younger than that would quite low.
