I think some dwarfs are going to crack no matter what, and you just need to roll with it and get them out of the way of the other dwarfs.

Also, should I have a Captain of the guard and punish criminals or leave them be? The captains always ends up stressed out as well.

Hey guys I've been away from the game for quite a long time now and I remember when Discipline was introduced it was a hassle to get used to it.

But now that I came back I started a new fort and lost it to tantrum spiralling. My bad, I'd left corpses lying around, that's how you learn. Huge and out of the way refuse stockpiles next time.

But I did that now and I'm having the exact same problem. Once they get a little stressed they go all the way, then they start fist fights or kill themselves or whatever.

Also after I build a library and temples and so on, the dwarves start to miss their family and friends, how can I solve that? They used to all hang out in the same place.

They get stressed from working too much and not enough, civilians want to train their martial skills but any form of combat stresses them out. This really sucks.

Any tips?

Clubs would be nice, probably the most ancient weapon and up until firearms were invented still useful in battlefields. You can equip wooden crossbows with no bolts and they'll use them as wooden hammers. Hopefully your suggestions will be included at some point and also javelins.

The power of propaganda, very good. I wonder how powerful it can become in the game because it's all-powerful outside of it. Preachers can have a similar role.

Not a bad idea but wouldn't it be way easier to code all new idiot behaviour? Maybe dwarf intelligence could work as a dificulty slider.

Dropping molten gold on invaders to create horrendous statues would also be nice.

Gold is heavy though, wouldn't they be crushed?
It worked in Game of Thrones.

I think some pretty cool stories would come out of this. Objects that make you unattractive, weak, insane or unlucky. Perhaps some have to be received freely by someone else otherwise you can't get rid of them. Maybe some trap your soul so that when you die, you come back undead. The possibilities are endless.

Quantum stockpiles are a placeholder for a better storage system, I think. No point improving it in the short term, it'll just lead to even more complaints down the line.

This idea can go places. It makes perfect sense that 7 dwarves decided to go found their own fortress based on a harmony of desires, not necessarily related to crafting.

Also, I always give my artifact weapons to squad leaders, regardless of their usefulness. Even artifact armor and shields that are crappy as hell.

I love this idea. I made a suggestion long ago about magic in DF being similar to real life magic such as ritual magic, chaos magic, shamanism, voodoo, etc.

Golden Dawn people especially love this sort of thing with large groups, chants and all sorts of elaborate props. If I'm not mistakened, buddhism and taoism have similar stuff and American Indians made some beautiful looking magic circles.
