That the rhesus macaque was stealing the bolt also explains why he's no longer on the map.

The only missing detail is that we don't know if a stealing critter would attack with an item it's stolen. That seems like the only explanation, because it usually would take 5-6 macaques to kill a dwarf, and we only have evidence of there ever being 2 rhesus macaques.

Not only, but there's evidence that it was murder in justified self-defense in that his "Hunt" was interrupted. I think what we have is just another case of someone accidentally activating Trapping on an innocent fisherdwarf.

I've seen sturgeons bolt people 15 squares away from the river(and beach themselves in the process because they charged onto land in the meanwhile)

A river animal rarely stays on the map for long, appear upstream, swim by and execute any fishers and then dissapear again. Big chance you missed it.
