Whittling

So, does anyone here do whittling or any other woodcarving? I'm just beginning now, I got a rather nice knife and a beginners book on whittling for Christmas, and I'm really looking forwards to it!

I tried my hand at it for a while, I went through some designs in a few books but everyone else seems to cut the basic shape with a band saw whilst I just hacked away with a knife ( I find the band saw similar to cheating, I don't know why) . I did enjoy it but timewise, I find myself having to sacrifice it for some of my other hobbies.

I managed to carve a gnome which i'll try and upload a photo of soon.
