Just as well, give them class prefixes like "I", "U", "WE-ALL", and "4-I".

Battlemustachio is glorious and should have been suggested initially, cutting out the middle man.

Well since some people are being childish, I'll offset it by being serious. If the human race were truly to advance to the point of space exploration, the population would probably be so long that, other than nicknames, there probably wouldn't be enough names to go around. A system of numbers would likely be used instead, with a written nickname that may or may not overlap with other ships in the galaxy. In addition to this, a majority of the ships would most likely be freelance, much like a wild west scenario what with the lack of law-enforcement and all.

Anyway, all this would work out quite simply. For instance, if the hypothetical group Positively Negative were to own a ship that was registered after the eighty thousand, eighty fourth ship it would have the designation:
