Well I was kinda thinking of a mostly serious game that just happens to be in a silly setting.

So basically silly things happen but everyone plays it completely straight?

So like where all the characters are the straight man... but the world itself is the one telling the jokes?

Once he has enough, he engages a challenging boss fight after which the PCs reluctantly acknowledge his strength and ask him to join.

It would be interesting if this was interrupted a few times, causing the fight to be postponed so the PCs can heal.

Seems good.

Not even the characters have to be entirely straight. I mean, fourth wall etc.

But the dangers they face, the conflicts, the story, that is serious.

Oh I know. OotS. That's a perfect example of what I mean.

But I was going to have this big emotional thingy if you got me to Max+1 friend! [/headcannon]

Again, I must insist we drop Male!PC.

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure what characterization I have. Never really thought about it. Hrm.

I always figured you are a mage so blinded by magic that you cannot take anything seriously anymore and thus you are rather affluent.

A mad mage who is either bored all the time or making fun for himself.

Dat mental image.

I dunno, what has worse implications, having no female PC or [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheSmurfettePrinciple]adding one that looks like she was shoehorned in[/url]?

Also I imagine Derm being the kind of character who would always do what would seem funnier (for his definition of funny), regardless of pragmatism.

That works.

It is also easy enough to imagine why you start as a villain but end up as a hero

Obviously you got bored and decided to try the hero thing for a change. Especially since the party, through defeating you, are such a blast.

Relevant.

One thing I find fault in many of these TVtropes articles is that they rarely understand the exception to the very rules.

The one on Mary Sue especially is a very poor guide to follow. Since it cannot seperate exceptional flawed characters... and Idealised yet not perfect characters.

The issue here Darvi is that this is a game with more characters then it has time to develop them. It may actually need to take pages from the Suikeoden guide to character writing.

You don't need to give them minute characterization, just enough to make them believable as characters. These things are more like guidelines anyway.

Fine fine fine.

Derm is an affluent wizard who through his magic has the ability to get anything he could ever wish for and in fact he did. The history of the land mentions a wizard who created flying fortresses of gold and jewels.

However hundreds of years Derm slowly got bored and then insane his kingdom going into disrepair and then disapearing into the annals of history to the point where that Wizard which was once him disapeared.

Derm has blinders up playing the world like it was a grand stage acting like a mad jester to try to squeeze any bit of fun he can get out of it.

The party reminds him of the humanity and glimmer of life he once had and for a split second he decides to take the cause knowing he had done terrible things in his mad stupor. He is still quite mad but now his madness has purpose.

Better?
