Not SirFluffington No!!!!!!!!

So how does that affect the game from this point?

Game over, or can you continue with that character?

Whether you even start with a pet or not can be changed in the options file. You can also acquire more pets as you descend the dungeon if you like. So no, this is not even close to a game over thing.

In NetHack, pets do mainly three things:
1) Make stealing from shops easy, if also a bit tedious
2) Help you fight monsters
3) Steal your (not so) precious, precious XP by helping you fight the monsters

Also, pets can help you curse-identify objects.

Well I guess I'll make taming a dog one of my objectives now.  :D

I think pets are far more useful than not useful as they don't steal too many kills and stealing from shops is great for some nice items (it is also much easier with a leash or a magic whistle) as well as distracting monsters like cockatrices.  :)

I will try post another part tonight.

Well here is the second part.

---------------------

[Part 2: The Minetown Terror]

Well losing my cat sucked so I take out my anger on a unlucky gnome. I carry on. I find a room with two more gnomes and as I kill them one of them drinks a potion.

With that reaction from the gnome it must be a potion of extra healing which is good to know
also level up!

I find a secret door and in the room I find a can of grease, although I have never found one of
these before and I have no idea what it does.

I kill a hobgoblin and he drops a couple of fortune cookies.  I eat one.

Well... that was certainly some useful information.  If a find a drum maybe i'll give it a go.

I find a room with a friendly hobbit, a statue and a chest. The chest contains...

(Go to the bottom of the post and scroll along to see the items.  I messed up, sorry.)

I go down the stairs and find myself in the Gnomish mines. I am quickly surrounded.

I manage to fight them quite safely but they do get a few hits into me (I go down to HP31/44). One of the gnomes drops a food ration which I promptly eat. I fight some more monsters; level up!

I find a glass orb (which I have no idea what it does) and then I fall down a trapdoor and find myself in Minetown.

I explore the town and I fight many gnomes and monsters. I level up (but I forgot to take a picture of the level message) and I enhance my . I get attacked by a group by a group of rats but I manage to one-shot them all.
I have more or less explored all of Minetown.

(Spot the mimic!)

There are 4 shops in this iteration of Minetown: a lighting shop, a general shop, a food shop and a hardware shop. There is also a temple with a lawful altar and a priest of Tyr

I kill a giant rat in the general store and it drops a food ration.  Unfortunately I have to pay for it as any un-owned item that falls in a shop automatically is claimed by the shopkeeper.  I begrudgingly give him my money and leave.

I fight a floating gas spore by throwing daggers I picked up from dead enemies. It explodes when it dies which wakes up a water nymph (nymphs are a real pain as they steal your items). I try to kill her by throwing daggers but she gets up to me and steals my sword. I go on a long chase after her while being chased by a black unicorn (unicorns can be very dangerous as they can hit you many times a turn but they can be avoided as they try to stay a knights move away, as in the chess piece).  I sufficiently pin cushion the nymph with daggers to kill her and get my sword back.

I decide to buy a lamp from the lighting shop as some levels of the Gnomish mines are dark. I accidently walk into the unicorn and it hits me 6 times! 6 TIMES! and I am down to 14 hp so I decide to run up stairs but it doesn't appear to be the place I was before, it is dark and I get surrounded. This is very bad.

I prayed before I was low enough on hp so my god did not heal me. I decide to quaff (drink) a gold potion. It was only object detection. Damn! I read the VE FORBYDERNE scroll but it only enchants my oilskin cloak. Damn! Damn!

I need a miracle... or do I?  I hit the SE gnome lord causing him to dig a hole with his wand and dissappear. Another gnome lord moves into his place. The other gnome and bugbear miss. I kill the gnome lord then move into his position and get to the stairs before they can hit me. That was close. Too close. I am alive though. :) (That pain in the ass unicorn is still chasing me so maybe not for long >:( )

I manage to find a cosy open spot and stand still to let my hp regenerate. While I heal up, the unicorn dance in circles in front of me, mocking me.  While I heal I get attacked by 2 dwarf zombies but they are easily dispatched.

That damned unicorn is going to get what it deserves for nearly getting me killed.  >:D
